>>57224169It's not only graphical fidelity, it's also the fact that they seemed to actually design the Pokemon before they started spriting them. In Gen 1/2 they very clearly sprited first in the majority of cases, while in Gen 3 a lot of Pokemon were actually designed beforehand and then they figured out how the sprite should look. This isn't necessarily true for all of them, and I wouldn't be surprised if it took until Gen 5 for them to do it consistently (funnily enough one of Gen 3's potential counterexamples is literally Scraggy), but it's the clear start of a trend. Interesting shortly after Gen 5 they went back to simpler designs (even simpler than Gen 1 in some aspects) because 3D models are hard.
