Why do people ask stuff like this when the answer is always bad designs, too much story shit, and not fun.

Because the monster designs (in the series in general) aren't 'cute' enough for mass appeal? I actually think MHS is a fun spin-off but it's not really the same thing as Pokémon, so I don't know how it could have 'killed' Pokémon.

. . . Was Stories even /trying/ to compete?

It felt like it was trying to be a level 5 game more than anything, but the mechanics were just way too simplistic to hold my interest.
