Medabots and Monster Rancher are incredibly niche unlike Etrian Odyssey. The only people who would actively be fans are people like me who didn't fall for the "Digimon is a knockoff" stuff back in the day and just liked them for what they were so they gave them a chance. Actually having new fans of them is exceptionally rare, and then said fans having the knowledge and effort to make a romhack requires even more effort.

Sure, total sales for EO are less than Medarot, but Medarot has fallen out of relevance hard and exists pretty much solely in Japan now compared to EO which is worldwide. The only people who remember it even exist in the west grew up with it on Fox Kids because Imagineer couldn't do anything with it at all until just a few months ago.

Because you're likely speaking to people who grew up with it as a series like me. Etrian Odyssey has more people in general in the west speaking about it and being fans of it than Medabots simply due to the fact that it's far more relevant in modern times in the west and more available as a brand. Imagineer is trying to rectify that with the mobile game's localization and getting the IP back from that crypto bro asshole to use in the west, but the average person will likely know EO before Medabots in terms of series in the west.

The games themselves are great, it's just a shame Pokemon Jade/Diamond made it pretty much impossible to release in the west. Even as a kid I knew of Pokemon Diamond's existence and how it seemed like a crappy Pokemon knockoff.

The TL patch guys are the ones who really hoped for the games to get a bit bigger because of their hard work but it's barely done much. RetroAchievements adding it to their site has helped at least and the fandom in general has gotten bigger since the first game got its final release. One can only hope some work is done on 2 since the only patch out for it to my understanding is a guy who used an MTLed version of a Chinese bootleg translation and appended it to it.
They also started doing work on another one of the games by the same dev which you can see on their wiki and it looks professionally done, but it's been a dead project since 2016.

One can only hope word of mouth at least gets the game and the patch guys the recognition it deserves because it doesn't deserve the crappy reputation Jade and Diamond gave it.

I always was under the impression of EO being super underground since blobbers are a extremely rare subgenre of RPGs already in decline back then when the first game came out so I'm surprised to see its actually a success rather than just Atlus's personal pet franchise.

Legitimately the only reason we haven't seen those games turned into Pokemon romhacks is because neither of them lend themselves well to the gameplay formula, nothing else. However I'm almost certain that any romhack that isn't just a FireRed rehash could get downloads regardless of what characters are in it.

Can't be, because YGO doesn't either and they managed to make a romhack where you collect monsters from it. Monster Rancher is also a no-brainer, you'd just make every monster a single evolution instead of multi. I'd argue it's more the popularity of the brand in the western fanbase and finding a team large enough to commit to it.

Speaking of etrian, does anyone here liked any of the Shinies for the original regional forms? I think the Gardevoir and Gallade, plus the new Eeveelution got some nice sprites.
Only criticism I have for the ralts line is that the final evos are a little too purple even tho they were supposed to be based off the purple-haired Princess Class

I guess the recent homage EO1Untold got in Metaphor Rephantazio is enough proof the series is not dead yet.
I just wish they took full advantage of the party system "secret" 6th party member slot and used it to recruit or capture monsters permanently.
I really like when games like Dragon Quest V or the SNES Shin Megami Tensei games let humans and monsters fight together in the same party but the closest thing to that in EO is that wild class that summon one regular animal of a list of 3 or 4 as temporary party members by just investing points on the Class's skill tree, thats just lame.

I've been brainstorming a concept like that for a monster collector unrelated to Pokemon. Not for direct combat, but for capturing. No throwing some magic item that instantly locks a monster away, but having to actually get up close and risk being attacked by a feral animal as you cast a net or something over it and drag it away.

Romhack route/map layouts are always so short compared to the original games. I know it's a lot of effort, but it's so lame when you start a new romhack that looks great and promising, but it's just City > route that takes literally 15 seconds to walk through, not run, walk > City > same type of route > City > same type of route > City > same type of route but maybe a short cave with like 3 rooms > City

Where are the Mt Moons? Where are the big puzzles? Where are the winding routes with multiple side areas? Where are the routes that are filled to the brim with trainers (for example the 2 routes that lead to Fuschia city)?
Odyssey felt like this at least for the first 3 stratums and all the diddly little islands with nothing on them but a patch of grass. I stopped playing it because I was getting bored. Lazarus feels like this too and I'm on gym 4. The problems in these two games are exasperated even more by how big their pokedexes are, sure I like a 400 mon pokedex it's cool, and much better than all 1000+ pokemon being stuffed into one game like radred, but the routes are so small it still feels clusterfucky.
Unbound is still the only new region hack I've played that actually FEELS like it could be a mainline pokemon game.

Yes in that it feels like it has the polish that a real video game studio would put into a game. Not that "it sucks like real pokemon." Every other hack I've played in comparison still just feels like a little fan side project and not a fullscale game if you get what I mean. Unbound felt full length, varied, had a lot of side areas to explore, and pretty sizable routes. Meanwhile it feels like I could blast through other hacks in a single day even while playing blind. Maybe there are other hacks I haven't tried that have that same feeling. I've heard Gaia is good, but still haven't got around to it. Still never played Clover because fakemon I'm already sort of sour on, but outdated 4chan humor from 2012 makes it even worse, but I've heard that game is pretty long too.

Haven't played Gaia buy i heard it's good, Clover is... rough, more parody than an actual game if I'm being honest, lacks some key design decisions like Breeding items and whatever is in the game is pretty hit or miss (the secret moves via breeding is cute but are worse egg moves somehow) i lost interest by the time i reached one of the post game gyms

After so long, I finally got it done!

Pokémon Evergreen is a fangame made with Pokémon Essentials/RPG Maker XP that has the usual features such as Fakemon and a new region. This demo goes up to the 4th Gym and more will come for the duration of 2026.

Synopsis: Today is the day that you finally become a trainer! Race against your rival, competing against each other to see who'll become Champion of the Tahoma region first, but be careful... Danger lurks around every corner. During your travels, you'll encounter Team X, a criminal syndicate that plans to construct a machine that will brainwash every owned Pokémon of the region under their control. It's up to you to put a stop to their devious plans!

Sceptile isn't "meta" but it also isn't trash that'll drag your team down just for attempting to use it. Plus you got a +spe nature and Sceptile has 120 base speed (and fuck-all defense anyways) so you didn't lose the nature lottery
Besides you can get every non-legendary before the postgame eventually, mutually exclusive mon choices are only temporary before you can get the other later
The earlygame dialog claiming that finding good pokemon in Reborn is hard is a fucking joke and an artifact from back when the game only had 5 generations of pokemon implemented
You'll only struggle with finding good mons if you stick to exclusively the main questline content and nothing else. Virtually everything has a use if you teambuild with at least some idea of what you intend to accomplish. I managed to make fucking Castform usable early on by pairing it with an alolan vulpix (or snover if you didn't use the vulpixpls password) and it was pretty strong up until I got real snow abusers after the third badge.

This brings back memories. They had a concept wherein you didn't own the monsters, they had numbers and you would call them to battle. If you couldn't defeat the mon (Rodans, that cyclone looking thing), it was game over. Not blacking out like in Pokémon. Last cave was nauseating for me to navigate though. Fun game overall.
I got this via CD ROM from friends and another game was bootleg Gold version. Apart from random freezes, that bootleg copy had level 123 Pinsir on Erika's party on Kanto.

I don't know if there's anything like that for gen 2 though. The most I've seen is this 16-bit Crystal that includes over 700 Pokemon. But I don't know if it's any good or how to play it (I guess you have to compile it yourself?)

Pisces is very large and I don't know if it's changed much since launch but the trainers can play very cancerously with busted as hell status effects so I would say avoid nuzlocking that shit unless you already know the game well. Mariomon comes with a nuzlocke mode and is pretty fun to nuzlocke, all the stats and types are same old normal pokemon so nothing unexpectedly crazy is in the game. I've not tried quarantine crystal nuzlocke, but I'd probably play through normally at least once.

It looks like I'm in the end game. I'm going to add 6 more trainers, and cap it at that till after the Pokecommunity debut. Not sure who the other 4 will be, but I will be adding Iono and Janine. I've hit the wall, I can't find sprites for trainers that will fill the holes that remain in the mono type tournaments.

The final count of tournaments that won't be making the cut are:
Fire: 3 short
Grass: 2 short (I think there is one more I can add, but it will still not be enough)
Poison: 1 short
Bug: 2 short
Rock: 2 short
Ghost: 3 short
Steel: 2 short
Fairy: 2 short.

The hope of the Pokecommunity debut is to attract people who are willing to help work on this and maybe get sprites to fill these holes, but that's a best case scenario that I'm not going to be counting on.

If you're someone who's really into teambuilding, something you'll be doing a lot of for all the different fights depending on your chosen difficulty, it can be a blast due to how many options you receive that it turns basically every Pokemon into something usable at some point in the game.

The guy who uploads these Elite Redux videos, MegaFidough, made a community post about it 2 weeks ago. It looks like they also re-designed Mega-Dragonite, Mega-Weavile, Mega-Typhlosion-H, and Mega-Milotic. That Weavile desperately needed a new design.

It looks like he's also uploaded some stuff relating to the new Z:A megas, as well as some custom new Mega/Redux/Convergent/Paradox forms. There's also some examples of the 2 bew shinies project, before and after of the new tilesets, a snowy Mossdeep City, and a new area. All stuff he hasn't posted in his videos.
Maybe you could find it all probing the server idk, lots of shit in there though.
I did do some digging and added some of the custom Pokemon that the community made and were approved for future versions at the bottom.

Thirding what the other anons said about team-building. Team-building is so satisfying in this hack because of the way certain abilities stack, the new moves and abilities created to compliment, and many receiving buffs.

The game has a huge learning curve though. Not only are you learning about all the new moves, abilities, and Pokemon... you also need to learn the ways in which every old move and Ability has changed.

-- Hidden Power buffed from 60 -> 80 power... also Secret Power has been turned into s Physical Hidden Power clone. This means that every Pokemon in the game has access to an 80BP Physical and Special move of any type.
-- Shock Wave, Flame Burst, and Water Gun have all been made priority moves
-- Big Pecks is now a Tough Claws clone
-- Shell/Battle Armor now reduce incoming damage by 20%, as well as the usual crit immunity

You could go on and on. I just use the online Pokedex and inspect every ability, even the familiar ones.

I can't say I know all the details of all his sins, but my personal dislike for him comes from his inability to take a hint and leave. He gets nothing but abuse from all of /vp/ (not just /rheg/), and just keeps coming back like we are his friends.

The worst things is that the people calling him a pedophile might actually be the closest thing he has to real friends anymore. This and his ghost town of a DA account are the only 2 places on the internet he hasn't been banned from. Pokecommunity, Eevee Expo, countless Discord servers, you name it, he's been kicked out. He doesn't have any real friends so he just comes to /vp/ to be shit on since that's better than no human interaction at all. Fuck, I want him gone more for the sake of his own well being than because of how annoying he is.

this. he hasn't done anything *that* bad I guess, but holy shit he's just fucking annoying and obnoxious. constant samefagging, pretending to be other people, baiting trolls to give him attention that ends up derailing threads, the autist meltdowns every couple months, constantly posting asinine updates for his game that nobody gives a shit about. it's exhausting. and he just will not fucking leave no matter how many times the community makes it clear they don't want him here. those things might not necessarily be against the rules, or illegal or whatever, but just because you're not breaking any rules doesn't mean that you belong in a community. a community is the people that make it up and their will, and the people of this community do not want David to be a part of it, but he doesn't care. and that makes people resent him even more. that's the situation in a nutshell.

there are some other more questionable things like the animated child rape video he made and some notoriety for scamming porn artists. but like, admittedly that doesn't have much to do with these threads. it does give people more ammo to troll him with though.

but yeah seriously, it's insane to me that he just will not quit posting here no matter how unwelcome the board makes him. but I think you're right in that it's probably the only interaction he has at this point, and even negative attention is attention so he'll keep coming back to the well as long as people engage with him, even if that engagement is just people telling him to fuck off over and over.

Anyone have any opinions on this hack?
I've never played ORAS before but I'm going to be starting this week, I want something that just makes trainers harder I don't want to change anything else about the game at all - not the item availability, not the egg hatching rate, not the encounters, not the O-powers; nothing else.
Is that possible at all with this? I've been playing the lite version of Pokemon Wilting Y and really really like it, so more of that would be fantastic.
