No, there is Ultraman reference in it. Just recently in the last episode of the anime, they shown of Mega Starmie and a mini short of it. It make the same grunting noise as Ultraman and it is even voice by Ultraman Z voice actor. In the short, they did a parody of it fighting Mega Charizard Y in studio with tiny buildings, as an homage to Ultraman. You're not wrong about the "Warning From Space" reference though as they also seem to be a homage.

Honestly, deserved. So many fans were quick to pick Totodile and hate on the other two so much that they got karma'd with the worst mega design.

I'm trying to decide if Gamefreak is doing this on purpose or they are painted into a corner.
They are scared shitless about getting sued from some artist about how they stole a fakemon design. And consequently with the amount of fakemons out there that make sense, I guess the only avenue for gamefreak to go is completely random meme junk no one would ever create?
