>as Naranja/Uva Academy language classes show, english, spanish, french, italian, japanese and chinese exist in the pokemon world
>the "show a pokedex entry in a different language" feature was mentioned in-universe years ago, meaning german and korean (and american spanish I guess) should exist as well
>there's even the case of XY postgame having Looker not understanding a tourist speaking another language. In western languages the tourist speaks japanese, but in the canon japanese version she speaks english
We know Looker can speak the language of Sinnoh (Pt), Hoenn (ORAS), Unova (BW), Kalos (XY) and Alola (SM/USUM), and yet he can't speak english or "galarian" despite being able to talk to unovans just fine. Moreover, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero shows Iono, a spanish streamer, is popular in both Spain/Paldea and the US/Unova, and has the language teacher confirming Unova does speak the same language as Paldea.

Therefore we can conclude out of all the regions so far, only Galar speaks "galarian", while Unova speaks "paldean", given Looker has zero knowledge of the english language but he can speak the same tongue as unovans and paldeans. Maybe Alola has the same language as Kanto-Johto-Hoenn-Sinnoh given Hawaii's japanese population, but it's unlikely they would have english if not even Unova does.

Jokes on you it would match with how the american spanish version works. For decades the latin american localization was basically just a translation of the american one to the point some of them are surprised of spanish localized names and think the english ones are the default "correct" choice. ZA introduced a latin american localization and while they are finally adding their own names, most of the previous ones are still just a copy of the american localization
>Korni the gym leader? Spain calls her Corelia. US calls her Korrina. Latam calls her... Korrina.
>Isshu the western region? Spain calls it Teselia. US calls it Unova. Latam calls it... Unova.
>Zumi the Elite Four? Spain calls him Narciso. US calls him Siebold. Latam calls it... Siebold.
So maybe Unova's official language is american spanish and that's why they can understand Paldea's european spanish. It's not far from reality seeing how spanish is already taking over burgerland

We know French is the spoken language in Kalos.

As far back as the JP script for Red and Green, he says [ボン ジュール], and an NPC in XY tells us "The famous Professor Oak's grandson came here to the Kalos region the study abroad. He got 'Bonjour' down just fine, but he still always said 'Smell ya later!' when he left!". Can't recall if the "bonjour" line was in the JP script, but the broader strokes about him studying abroad was in the original JP script.

ZA's whole plot reads as an allegory for immigration. I don't think it's a coincidence they went with a 5 year timeskip either, the whole thing has this post-2020 vibe of "we need to make peace with and adjust to a changed world"
>>
>>58827571
It's "criticizing" and Unova being a functional, walkable, healthy, friendly and cultured version of burgerland with free healthcare when spanish becomes the most dominant language is the opposite of a critique to immigration lmao
>>

>Can't recall if the "bonjour" line was in the JP script
It was. Bonjour has always been the main "catchphrase" associated with the character in Japan, which is why he says it so often in Masters.
>>
>>58827822
I know, I'm just unsure if the Japanese script for XY alludes to him picking up the phrase when he was in Kalos. Couldn't find a text dump to confirm.

>lore autism about languages
>in Pokémon
No point to it. You already thought more about it than GF ever did and will. There's no logic or thought about it. They just insert the mention of "other languages" whenever they feel like it, it never makes any sense.
>>
>>58827857
Chew gum and walk. Two things can be true. The brand simultaneously has this background texture about language and culture while also leaning on the "human language" or "world of Pokemon" copouts anytime language is a plot point, like with Meowth.

Human language is abstracted, the same way cries are abstracted. Like, we know Pokemon say their own names, but we hear the in-game cries, and we see how those cries are rendered in text. It takes two brain cells to understand the player is hearing and seeing an abstraction of those spoken words and sounds.

SM also had Anabel literally tell Looker to speak English so she can understand him, but that line was probably different in the Japanese version.

But different languages existing in-universe has always been a thing. It's even a plot point in XY's postgame

In Pokémon's timeline, NA was colonised by Kalos. Unovans are baguette eaters

>カロスに留学されていた オーキド博士のお孫さん ボンジュールは使いこなすのにさようならはバイビー!なのよね Professor Orchid's grandson studied abroad in Kalos, he's good at saying "bonjour", but when he says goodbye he uses "bye-bye!"

>Like, we know Pokemon say their own names
Do they really? I always felt like that was an anime-only thing. When a Pokémon does their cry in the game it's labelled as them going Jigglypuff or whatever because to me that's just how they write Pokémon onomatopoeias
>>
>>58827939
Unless paldeans also speak french and nobody speaks spanish that can't be the case, because unovans speak the same language as paldeans
>>
>>58827934
>どっ…… どうされたんですか?その 口調……それに なにが あったんです?そんなに あわてられて……
No mentions of different languages here
>>
>>58827957
In Pokémon's timeline Kalos also won the war of Paldean succession
>>
>>58827967
Unlikely given that would mean no region speaks spanish, and spanish is even used in pokemon names both in english and japanese.
>>
>>58827975
Consider this: Pokémon names in Spanish are the same as in English, whereas some other languages like French or German gets their own names. Therefore this obviously means that Spanish is an extinct language in the Pokémon universe. My logic is flawless
