The point is that you're actually raising them. As opposed to the nu-games where EXP is duplicated out of thin air for your entire team while you still use only one Pokemon as is (You)r prefered playstyle.

in terms of raw levels, yes. but the tradeoff of raising a whole team is you get wider type and move coverage. I find that both shake out to be pretty equal in terms of player power. just depends whether you find it more fun to brute force everything with one overleveled Pokemon, or play rock paper scissors every fight.
