How did they go from incredibly well received at launch to being the least talked about main series games in the franchise?
They weren't/aren't either of those things. Please delete this board-space-wasting thread. You still have eight minutes to do so.
Tutorials make it unfun to explore. Z Moves were quickly forgotten. USUM didn't change too much. It's just ok.
>>58938939the region, pokemon, story, and characters are excellent but the gameplay itself is not
>>58938939Mainly how long the cutscences are among technically swinging the pendulum of the series going too the much easier route thx to the exp share and most of the new mons being slower than a shounen protag's iq to start in guess
They had reasonably good presentation but several deep-cut flaws that made people less fond of them over time. Rotomdex, for example.
>>58938939it's really strange how Ohmori's first crack as head director was by far his best, even beyond graphics SuMo just has the best pokemon and world of any of his gamesIf he got fired or died in a car wreck after this games release he'd probably be viewed completely differentlyy.
>>58938939>incredibly well received at launchrevisionism. they were heavily criticized on release.
The retarded unskippable cutscenes murders its replayability. Do ROM hacks fix this problem?t. Did multiple playthroughs of Ultra Moon.
>>58938939They were only well-received among waifufags and yurishits
>>58938939Terrible replayability.
>>58939074it was broadly seen as a big step up from X&Y and one of the most refreshing games in the series
>>58938939>incredibly well received at launchIn the twilight zone, maybe.Just because SWSH and SV were horrible doesn't make SM good now. They're still rail roaded slogs with a lame waifu bait story
>>58939089>tfw even the games themselves are subject to having """memorable flaws"""Why must every game that has my favorite Pokemon in it be cursed?
>>58939101>polygon
>>58939111>>58939103is this better? the games were well received at launch, you can hate them if you'd like but they were not disappointing to the general audience like SwSh and SV were
>>58938939Fool me once, I'm mad.Fool me twice, how could you. Fool me three times, you're officially that guy, okay? You know him, you know the one. You go up to the bar and he's like, "This game is, uh, officially it's a Shigeru Ohmori ech, my dad knows him." Fuck you!I ain't havin' that shit!
>>58938939Because USUM happened. So now all we do is fight over how shit those were whenever Gen 7 is brought up. That, and SS came out... This place has never been the same since.
>>58938939No one wants to go back to them because they're literal dick cancer to replayNot that I liked them on the first go either. I only played USM because I thought there was no way SM was as bad as I remembered. I was proven wrong
>>58938939zero replayability
>>58938939>How did they go from incredibly well received at launchThey had the benefit of being released in an anniversary year, with Pokemon Go helping to bring many people back and see how the game has changed.
shillie
>>58939303this SWSH were such a monolithic turd it overshadowed SM
>>58938939Honeymoon period ended
>>58938939Pic unrelated? They were totally panned on launch only to later become the most fondly remembered of the 3D games.
>>58938974>>58939823True if you have brain damage>>58939142I can show you that most Pokemon games are well received at launch. SwSh was well received at launch. Your point is moot
>>58938939I loved them initially but they are really hard to replay. I have successfully done multiple runs of every game up thru ORAS. sun and moon is what's giving me issues coming back to
>>58938939>incredibly well received at launchPeople bitched incessantly about Gen 7 until a few years ago when people who were nostalgic for them popped up in droves.
>>58939967I don't have this problem because I shamelessly replay the games on fast forward.
>>58938939The online was an immediate obvious downgrade from XY and the forced tutorials were difficult to sit through.
>>58938939Because their replacements USUM took everything, added a little shit here and there and fucked everything else up even more than the originals
>>58939996actually that sounds like a good idea. I usually hate emulating but the Ayn Thor I just got might help. brb going to try this
>>58939956show me
>>58939101>>58939142Critical reviews aren't really reflective of the general audience. SWSH got a bunch of 8 and 9s too. The actual ground level discourse around SM was much more divided. Not as negative as SWSH or SV, but nowhere near unanimously positive either. I remember a lot of complaints about the amount of dialogue and cutscenes back then, among other things. If anything, I actually think the perception of them is a little more positive now than it used to be. There's been a wave of nostalgia for them recently and the people who were kids when they came out and played them as their first Pokemon games have grown up and joined the conversation, while simultaneously a lot of older, disenfranchised fans have been dropping out of the franchise.I think if you said SM were your favourite Pokemon games in 2018 you would most likely be laughed at, but these days it's not that uncommon of an opinion. And I feel like I get a lot more pushback when I criticize them than I used to. Of course, time taints memory, and maybe I'm only remembering the conversations from back then that I want to. I'm not about to go trawl through the /vp/ archives to back myself up, I don't care that much. But that goes both ways. A couple reviews don't really mean that much in the grand scheme of things.
>>58940081
In a time where everyone is trashing Pokémon games, not being talked about is a positive
>>58940112I think it's more that once we've had some actual time we've been able to look at the game in a more objective light. Like, there's a lot of strong points compared to XY or SS, but there's also a lot of blatant huge fucking problems as well. SV is probably going to have a similar outcome unless every future Pokemon game does it's thing but worse at which point it will probably end off mediocre like XY compared to the dogshit that is SS.
>>58939103>In the twilight zone, maybeSM were definitely very well received by /vp/ on launch. It took a couple weeks for the honeymoon period to wear off and for people to realize they had just gotten ORAS'd again though.
>>58940130I'll say that Lusamine's character/motive is USUM isn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be. She's still a bitch who abused her children, and we know now from the Ohmori's SM notes in the teraleak that the reason for her actions literally always was just narcissism from being spoiled as a kid, and not from the alien jellyfish meth or whatever.
>>58938939No replayability.
>>58938939They’re still the best 3D games
>>58940283>>58939089So like literally all pokemon games?
>>58940130>Look at the game in a more objective light over timeYeah retards, except that happened even with the games you don’t like such as XY and SwSh. SM killing the best online system we’ve ever had for a more confusing Join Avenue being one of a few times people admit that XY was decent.Stop thinking that this only happens to your favorites. You just don’t pay attention.>>58940325No, zoomer.
