When I was a kid living through Pokemania in the late 90's, no girls were into it. Only boys seemed to play the games, trade the cards, or talk about the show. However, now it seems like half of the people who talk about Pokemon are foids. Was there some marketing push to get more girls into the franchise?
>>59017233Gen II when they made all the cutesy designs and babies.
>girlsWho's going to tell him
Girls have always liked the cute ones, marketing just took a while to catch on. Now they get stuff like this.
>>59017256I've seen little girls begging their parents to buy them Pokemon cards when I worked retailI sometimes see women with Pokemon keychains outsideMy gf was a fan of the series from Gen 3-5
>>59017233Same time women discovered anime in general
>>59017233Gen 2. Baby Pokemon were specifically designed to appeal to girls who wanted cute Pokemon.
>>59017233Girls have always liked the cute mons. They're just not into the games as much as boys.
>>59017255>>59017452Interesting, maybe I didn't notice because I went to a private Christian school where the girls were all super girly>>59017457Then how did they engage with the franchise? Again they didn't seem to talk about it at all
Nintendogs and nintendogs being sold out.
>>59017268Man I forgot Espurr existed
>>59017268Am i a girl if i like this image?
>>59017457The main thing in the games, besides the paper thin plot, is the meta game with all the stats and EVs and shit. This only appeals to autistics, who are mostly male.
>>59017543Yes, now assume the position
>>59017233.
>>59017544Pokemon has something to appeal to everyone. That is by design because TPC knows damn well how to merchandise.Girls like cutemons, so put cutemons in the game and make plushes off them, especially the most popular ones.Boys like coolmons, so add coolmons to the game and make action figures and toys off them.Competitive players can go in depth and participate at officially-hosted competitive events.Card game players and collectors can buy the cards. Resellers can also buy packs to break to resell individual cards, supporting the game itself by giving players exactly what they want to build their actual decks for competition.TPC makes 4x the profit on merch than they do games. The games are the backbone holding the franchise up, but everything else builds upon them immensely.

Right at the start you had Eevee, Butterfree, Chansey, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, and Togepi* if you're wanting to do the "girls only like pink fluffy things" junk and think Pikachu was too badass for A GIRL to watch it.*First appearance in western airing was March 1999 so it was a regular during summer break
>>59017233>When I was a kid living through Pokemania in the late 90's, no girls were into itYour experiences are not universal. >>59017469>Interesting, maybe I didn't notice because I went to a private Christian school where the girls were all super girlyAnd I was right.
>>59017593I'm so glad my Christian school didn't push that narrative
>>59017233pokemon has always been a unisex franchise. it was one of the few where you weren't made fun of for your gender if you liked it
Girls were always into Pokemon. Everyone watched the anime and collected the cards and bought the toys. Gen 2 is when deisgns became more cutsey and babyish in order to appeal to girls more. But keep in mind that there were already cutemons in gen 1 and GF were attempting to appeal to girls already, it's why they asked Nishida to design some mons and why we got the first evolution starters and Pikachu. Gen 2 just went more aggressive into it, and mons in general were made simpler in order to be turned into toys more easilyIt's kinda like Digimon only existing to be the boy version of Tamagotchi, even though I remember everyone being into Tamagotchi. Digimon just leaned into being more boyish
>>59017543You could be a 40 year old Japanese man too
>>59017233I was introduced to Pokemon by girls anon.
>>59017469>Then how did they engage with the franchise? Again they didn't seem to talk about it at allLiterally everyone watched the anime. There are places that never got the games but Pokemon was still hugely successfully. I still remember a female classmate playing the games in gen 3.>>59017544>The main thing in the games, besides the paper thin plotIs the collecting. Girls love collecting things, completing the pokedex is a big process, and then you throw shinies in the mix to add even more autism.Stats and EV's and shit are multiple layers down in Pokemon's main actual widespread appeal, but even then girls will still like stats and descriptions that give pokemon some individual flare.
>>59017233Since always? Clefairy nearly become the mascot.
>>59017683And there's a lot of way more "boyish" franchises than pokemon that still have a lot of women in their fanbasesThe aforementioned "tamagotchi for boys" still has a lot of female fans, the biggest Digimon collection in the world is by a Chinese womanWomen liked Starscream from Transformers The creator of Gundam once said that he prefers fujos writing yaoi fiction more than the male model kit builders and collectors, because the fujos care more about the human characters and writing than the robot and tech
>>59017684Personally I find it fascinating how Pokemon attempted to appeal to girls before they asked Nishida to cook something upClefairy still has some rough features to it
They were more into the cards from my experience back then
It seems everyone has a diffrent experience with this. As for myself, I'm a zoomie that grew up with latter gen 5 and gen 6 (hold your fading bones together, fosils). I knew plently of people at my elementry shgool that were into the games and cards, but I don't remeber any of them being girls. Kind of jealous of the people that knew girls into Pokemon when they were that age lol.
