I stopped playing competitively after Gen 6. This was the last Gen I remember having fun making and battling teams

To much to relearn after Gen 7, would also have to consider a new battle system/gimmick entirely for each Gen after Gen 5 battles, megas was enough for me.

I feel like I’ve been seeing a weirdly large amount of Ribombee on ladder, I thought that went out of style a while ago

To be honest, I’ve never gotten that deep into it myself. I tend to build one team and keep it for months. Gen 8 banned the gimmick in OU, but I guess it’s fair to be wary about Tera. Generally there are only a few likely choices, but it’s still a lot to think about. And sometimes there are curveballs.

pretty much never. gen 8 killed my interest and the lack of a tera ban in gen 9 solidified that smogon has lost it. banning sleep moves as a whole because of 2 abusers was the moment they jumped the shark, i'll never go back.
not excited for champions either, BSS has always been a shit format and doubles are actual garbage with 50/50s every turn.

Aside from randoms I've always been an old gens player so I probably won't pay much attention to it. Played a few dozen games of Gen 9 OU like a yeat ago and didn't enjoy it.

gen9 is revolting. Dnite and Zama are comparable to gen7 magearna to play against, I haven't touched that steaming dogshit in months. I just watch tournament video coverage from time to time, at least until Champions comes out

Frolass. Spikes + spinblock in one slot rules, has a ton of annoying moves and it's just fast enough to make it work. I'm still pissed it got banned from DPP on a technicality

Predicting what your opponent will do and attempting to get out in front of that IS THE GAME. There’s almost NEVER a situation where the opponent has two exactly equally good and valid moves and you have to do a complete guess as to which one is going to happen. Their decision will always be motivated by something; viewing one option as more secure in the event of an unexpected play by you, or as targeting a more important threat, or as putting them in a better position down the line.
