Instead of learning over a thousand different pokemon names you could've studied a thousand different Kanjis and you've be halfway there with japanese
You fucked up
>>
There's no "learning" Pokemon names, I just remember the ones I see and I already know enough Japanese to play games and listen to music.
>>
I bet there isn't a single person in /vp/ who knows the Japanese name of every pokemon.
>>

>Pokemon
Cool creatures! I like!
>Kanji
Hard lines! Do not like!
>You
Faggot!
>>
>>59056804
Do you think anyone devotes time to "learning" Pokemon names? If you play the games, you know what the creatures are called. Only idiots can't retain information.
>>
>>59056804
what if I'm doing both
>most kanji have at least 2 readings
>realize I'll need to learn a 2nd name for every pokemon (the fuck's a yungera)
that was really a mindfuck
>>
>>59056867
I know like 10. Not counting the ones that are just the same like legendaries or pikaclones.
Lizardon
Hanekage
Bossgodora
Banguirus
Sazendora
Purin
Boober
Betbeter
Sirknight
Komuruu
Ebiwalar
Sawamular

Also Gosuto, but I don't count that, same for Capoeira.
I also know Glion, Meraruba, and Dokukurage, but don't actually remember what pokemon those are. I assume Meraruba is a fire type at least.
>>
>>59056867
I do.
I don't know all the English ones though
>>
>>59056872
This
I can think of like two pokemon I have ever paid attention to the names of beyond reading it.
Hydreigon because I've heard it pronounced like a dozen ways and wanted to not sound retarded
Todegemaru because it's a japshit name that's hard to read so I had two.
I have spent zero time actually committing other names to memory, and know most of them entirely by association with the pokemon.

I know like a dozen kanji so I've spent more time on Kanji than pokemon names
>>
>>59056927
>japshit name that's hard to read
no it's not
刺(toge; spike/thorn, i.e. spiky)で(de; and)丸(maru; round/circle)
shit like mikaruge (spiritomb) throws me off way more since the name doesn't evoke anything at a glance

Meanwhile Alakazam is something a magician says, Squirtle is a squirrel turtle that squirts, Aggron is two of the easiest syllables in the universe, Golurk is a golem who lurks, and Kyogre wants you out of his swamp.

So yes, Todegamaru, a name that means nothing in english, contains no meaningful phonemes in english, evokes any ideas or concepts relatable to the pokemon in English, or follows any typical English word construction or stress rules, requires a bit more attention to memorize, because it is effectively gibberish in English. It does not hook into the existing linguistic structure of English, because it is an entirely foreign word.
Thank you for proving this point by explaining what Todegamaru's name means entirely as related to Japanese, while reinforcing what I said by explaining that Spiritomb is hard to remember in Japanese, because it's name doesn't really evoke anything in Japanese.
>>
>>59056867
I know LIZARDON from KANTOOOOOOO
>>
>>59057139
>Kyogre wants you out of his swamp.
Kai (海 - Ocean) + Ogre
>>
>>59057139
the name is easy once you know what to look for
and MIKAruGE is just 御影石(mikageishi, granite) and possibly karma (karuma), which can be a bit harder to piece together because granite far from the first word a beginner would learn
>>
Pachirisu is a really Japanese name but nobody every has trouble with that.
>>
>>59057275
The Pokemon wiki says it's mikageishi, karma and karuishi (軽石, pumice)
>>
>noooooooo why aren't they translating the pikachu clones that's so dumb their names make no sense!
>who cares if pikachu was never translated!!!
>>
>>59057288
I've never heard an English speaker not mispronounce it really badly.
>>
>>59056872
What if there was a romhack where each pokemon was replaced by a kanji character? I wonder if that would help people learn what all the kanji are. Obviously it wouldn’t help you to actually use them, but it’s better than nothing.

I moved to Japan in 2016, and became a Japanese citizen in 2021. In June I'll be celebrating 10 years of living here. I already learned all of the useful kanji (all of the 常用漢字 plus a few hundred others) a long time ago and I only play games in Japanese now. Admittedly, I don't know the names of all of the Pokemon in Japanese but I know quite a few through playing the games in Japanese. At some point I plan to replay every Pokemon game in Japanese so I'm sure I'll learn the rest when I do that.
>>
>>59057313
I think the answer can be found in Too Many Types.
Once the games reach a certain threshold of incomprehensibility, people stop processing information and brute force the games because they are baby easy. At best you remember one or two very relevant tidbits.
>>
>>59056927
>Todegemaru because it's a japshit name that's hard to read so I had two.
Hard to type it too seems
>>
In summary, Togedemaru is probably the worst pikaclone.
>>
>>59057313
>I wonder if that would help people learn what all the kanji are
no. moonrune lookups help, but moonrunes best taken in together with words. to give you an obtuse example (I had to look it up)
>敗北(haiboku) means defeat (phrase given is 戦いに敗れて逃げる, be defeated in battle and flee)
>you'll be hard-pressed to figure out why the fuck 北(north) is used instead of spelling it using the character 逃(flee), yielding 敗逃(haitou) instead
>it turns out the 北 has the (old, obscure) reading 北げる(nigeru) and it's stuck like that ever since
>>
It kind of sucks that all of the best gens are the ones where you can't use kanji.
>>
>>59057717
Oh yes, absolutely, that's without question, it's the worst pikaclone and a contender for the worst pokemon of all time. Simisear was, perhaps, judged too harshley.
>>
>>59057785
Skill issue
>>
>>59057785
if you're autistic you can do soragaki (trace kanji for a word with your finger as you play). that's assuming you learn how to write. stroke orders can be guessed in around 98% of cases
>>
>>59057288
>patchy + ri + sue
Easy enough for an english speaker
