Her three older sisters just took the piss out of her as all siblings do with each other. Plus Japan is very traditional and will very rarely have an ugly female main character. An ugly Misty would be way less marketable. Plus I'm pretty sure someone who worked on the anime stated that the female characters were meant to be eye candy for young boys though I don't remember where I read this from so don't quote me on that.
