If you're talkin GBL, yeah, flying is probably one of the best defensive types right now.
Electric is a huge liability right now given that Ground is 25% of the top 20. The only ones that can manage are those that don't instantly die to ground (Hisuian Electrode, Chargabug) or is ground itself (Stunfisk). Even Morepeko is feeling the heat right now, and they really tried to make it a staple of GBL.
Rock has pretty much never existed in GBL, and continues to never exist. You got like Carbink and.... Bastiodon, I guess.
Leaves Ice, which is high risk/high reward. Not every team can fit one in on their limited slots, but it does just win some match ups by how much it covers. Unfortunately you're running headfirst into the Tinkaton / Melmetal / Corviknight meta right now, so you better have a steel answer booked and ready.

Eh, they kind of needed this. Megas are actually nice because they create a scenario where you can catch a wild Pokemon and it is actually something that has potential outside of your collection. Most of the meta is dominated by fusions which hinge on "Okay catch this limited special form of a raid-only Pokemon x times and catch the thing you're fusing to it and now you finally have a usable Pokemon."

They also only eat up one slot on your team, so they're not like DW Necrozma where you want 5/6 of it and anything else (that's not a level 4 mega) is a significant downgrade. The fusions were actually really toxic to any gameplay centered on wild Pokemon and shadow Pokemon, since shadow Mamoswine (which was previously amazing) only has like 77% of the throughput of Kyurem-W.

Lots of cases where you can have both, especially as they release more megas. Granted I've barely used Mewtwo-Y with its broken damage because I end up using X (which only deals moderately less broken damage) with psystrike. With Dragonite and every dragon attacker that powercreeps it, you'll get both pretty easily in any case.

I'm really curious what they end up doing with future gimmicks. They incorporated megas in a predictable way, but then skipped Z-moves entirely and turned dynamax into a minigame for farming stardust.

I actually kind of wonder if they're planning something special with orichalcum pulse/hadron engine/protosynthesis/quark drive because we've seen about 2/3 of Paldea at this point, but the cover legendaries and paradox Pokemon are nowhere to be found. That's like 22 presumed raid-only Pokemon that would probably contribute nothing to the PVE meta without some extra juice.

If they're anything like the Galarian Birds, they're going to be box fillers with functionally no purpose, meaning you can wait to get them at no downside.
Now, they do have better stats and signature moves, so maybe they crack them to make them actually something people would want (unlike the Galarian Birds), but I'd say last ball hundo of a raid is a superior option to your random 4/13/1 useless box filler.
