Posted this last thread, but it was the end and the usual end of thread, er, event was happening so:
Yeah, still enjoying the shit out of Zeppelin Armada and HND. Bassillisa is OP and I think it might be best to limit her use, but otherwise this is still the most fun I've had in a Doom wad in a long while.

Is it an error that Ancient Aliens Wormhole Junction theme plays on the canyon level? It feels unfitting, as great as this music is.
>>10858829
Improved Nashgore
I really need to check this out, I love Nashgore. It's the best gore system for Doom imo, Droplets is too weird and Bolognese is too extreme and can literally cover walls and switches.

Have you tried setting the blood to a lower level? I like Tarantino movie, but killing anything too close to a wall or switch will still do that. Just not as bad.

I need to play through the OG Half Life and Opposing Farce again.

FUCK I love the Black Mesa Research Facility so much! I want to work in there as a security guard or a forklift operator. I want to come to work in the morning, go to my designated locker, put on the armor, kevlar helmet and strap my pistol on and then sit in a security booth and go on checkup rounds. Then go to the cafeteria to eat from of them trays that has slots for meat, sides, veggies and so on. Eat good and then get a soda pop and after shift go back to dorm to play vidja, crank it to some late night adventure tv or innernet stuff and repeat.

What reminded me of it was not the half discussion the other day but seeing a youtuber in a blue shirt and a tie that made me instantly think he's a half life scienceman.

Decided to try just that. Doing a pistol start with this combination might have been a mistake methinks, Past Linked can really struggle until you find upgrades.

Love all these neat little changes that Malefactors adds except giving the summoning ability to archviles. If the map designed in such a way that allows them to spot you early in an unreachable place when prepare to deal with the non-stop waves of those damned floating cubes.

P2P, max 8 players, requires more coordination than the average 4chan user is capable of, good fucking luck if you're on the other side of the planet. You're not gonna host any Sunday Night Shitshows with it but maybe you can get some small games going at an acceptable level.

Once again asking for HDest wads, urban theme, not too heavy on combat, the latter optional but preferable.
Sgt Mark's remake of Downtown was pretty nice if brutal (heh), also tried the first half of Hellfire. Doom 2 in City Only on the list already. Anything I'm missing?
>>
>>10858874
it's extremely hard to organize without live chat
everyone has to handle syncing mods themselves
playercount has to be established before launching the game
players also all need their ports forwarded, and some ISPs/routers are bullshit and won't work at all without a tunneling service
everyone has to join in a relatively quick timeframe or the game will fail to launch and everyone will have to reconnect to try again
i organized an HD game once and it went okay, but at least two of us were already experienced in the matter and we had a minimal file list with no submods

Heh. What would those midis be?

Also damn, played some more Q2 Ground Zero today. Love the level design, incredibly 'lived in' for Quake 2 levels and if this would've been the standard for Quake 2 base game I would've loved Quake 2 base more.

The expansion fucking loved gladiators tho'. And medics. Which is good I guess because base game had almost no medics. Ground Zero got me to finally bind the railgun to 2 and BFG to T. I ain't reaching for 9 and 0 when I'm constantly running into Gladiayors who most of the time will splatter me in one shot cuz GZ is not playing around but I love GZ a lot. Very nasty ambushes a lot of the time but the levels are really well designed and the combat gives me a cathartic feeling.
>>
I have newfound appreciation for Quake lighting. Making it look good is hard, let alone great. Fucking with delaying and waiting to make it cover the right amount of surface with the right amount of light without making it obvious that there's an invisible light source there is quite the pain.

It's just frustrating to get pestered that it's the most amazing wad ever, even by mappers and other people who ought to know better.

It's presentation is good but under the hood it doesn't do anything terribly mindblowing and the actual encounter design it has is average to shit.
>>
>>10859424
Eviternity 1. Not bad, but I felt it was mostly just standard in quality, and Dehydration absolutely kills the pacing.
I actually quite like Eviternity 2, though.

>It's just frustrating to get pestered that it's the most amazing wad ever, even by mappers and other people who ought to know better.
Yeah people overstating things tend to be annoying, but I think MyHouse earned its praise. What DOES annoy me however is posers, you can tell they're just trying to being cultured without actually knowing what that is lol. And I witnessed it like 10x clearer than before because we were obviously in on it way before anyone else was.

All incoming projectiles and melee strikes coming at you is max damage. This is a universal truth.

Absolutely no combat testing done yet apart from the early areas and I'm sure I focused way too much on gimmick shit and visuals.

Hello friends, as some of you may know, Steam has an FPS Fest/Sale going on right now and a lot of retro games as well as (seemingly) retro inspired games are heavily discounted. Do you have any recommendations for someone who thinks that Doom is one of the best games ever made (I could play Doom 2 every day and not get bored), finds Hexen, F.E.A.R., Turok and Quake amazing and thinks the Build engine games are pretty alright but below the level of the aforementioned games?
I'm looking at Amid Evil and videos are giving me a bit of a Hexen vibe. Worth the time investment? Any hidden gems? Hrot seems to be up my alley as well but it's not as discounted as some other titles

I enjoyed Amid Evil the most of the initial wave of Retro FPS throwbacks, It's like the direct sequel to Heretic we never got.
I would also recommend Ion Fury, I know you mentioned build games being just "pretty alright" but Ion Fury is a masterpiece in the engine, if a bit long-winded.
>Any hidden gems?
Zortch is not on sale but it's only $5 and feels straight out of the early 2000s in the best possible way.

Shit's difficult, usually it's making friends with people in the community who know their stuff and aren't likely to screw anybody over.

Dehydration was an absolute slog, among the worst paced maps that ever landed in cacowarded wads. Wrath's issue is the lack of variety and how long every map drags on for. You see almost all the game has to offer by the end of the first map. I went back to replay that game on the highest difficulty within a couple of weeks but I have no desire to replay Wrath on Outlander.

I think "damaged" is a very strong word to use here, it's way overhyped but the premise has frequently been "Look at how different and radically changed this is from normal Doom!" and extensive amazement at "This is all in the Doom engine and that's unbelievable!" or "Doom should not be able to do this!"
If someone came away from all that retarded hype thinking "So this is what Doom is..." then frankly, they probably have a massive fucking learning disability and would probably struggle to play either myhouse.wad.pk3 or just vanilla Doom. Considering how straightforward and easy the base game is to get into, especially these days, that should paint a vivid picture.

I'm not particularly bothered by this hypothetical casualty, and I also think this is just people inventing reasons to dislike myhouse.wank in response to its aggressive overexposure, which I understand emotionally, but I think you should stand back and take a breath, then think about the actual logic of that claim.

I'm not intensely seething at MyHouse or people who like it I just am rolling my eyes at people on twitch etc trying to wring people's arms to play that stuff and get bored.

I'm also not saying that the damage to it is ecxensive or anything but it's kinda the same thing in the stalker fandom where people are telling others interested in the franchise to just play Gamma which is more like a standalone freeplay mod. Just makes me very aggressively let out a stress sigh and roll my eyes ok.

>CoC and it's consequences
Well ehh, I like that those freeplay mods exist but I just think that maybe ppl should not suggest overhauls like that to the uninitiated.

MyHouse is a good mod like GAMMA / Analmeme is a good Stalker mod but the overhype and shilling has been out of control.

My stance is that I ENJOY ALL MODS EXISTING, but you know, roll my eyes on how certain things spin out of control. In any case it was kind of like a flash in the pan, MyHouse that is.

Maybe the frame sequence is too out-of order to interpolate them into an animation properly?
Damn shame if so, since I keep wishing they'd couple that ducking sequence with the unused spike uppercut attack as a nifty anti-cheese suprize of sorts for all smartasses who'd try to solo one with just the Blaster by abusing the insistence of Q2 monster AI to dodge every first projectile coming directly at them untill it passes, which locks them in place with zero consideration of followup shots from any player with above double-digit IQ

>>
>>10860521
The gas grenades and frag grenades are quite useful
>>
>>10860410
I think the SSG gets put on a pedestal because it gives you extremely good value for its ammo, and its mass of shot is both great for stunning viles and for mowing down swathes of imps and zombies.

I do think that a lot of people neglect the Plasma in favor of the BFG (which in fairness gives you EXQUISITE value for your ammo if used right), or the notion that they MIGHT find the BFG so they save their cells just in case, which means they don't use that resource at all in some cases. The Palmsa is real damn good, so that's a real damn shame.

The Rocket Launcher is great and fun, and you got nothing else using those, so I can't imagine someone neglecting it.
>>
>>10860525
The frag grenades are sextastic, but they don't exactly have a lot of range.
>>
>>10860530
The Plasma is like the Chainsaw in that its usefulness lies in you being unable to find a weapon that's better than it(BFG & berserk, respectively). Aside from the pistol, none of the other Doom weapons really have that problem.

I disagree, the chainsaw is good, but only in niche situations, like with pinkies in a choke point or bullying a lone meatball. Even a non berserk fist is better for trying to melee otherwise.
The plasma is generally strongly effective against most things in most situations, because it just shoots and with high DPS, the BFG having much higher DPS and better value for the ammo doesn't make that not true.

It’s not even that the plasma gun “is bad”, BFG just dishes out some seriously obscene damage. It also just seems like a perpetual balancing nightmare: Having two guns with polar opposite rates of fire, ammo used per shot, and they share the same ammo pool. It makes more sense when the BFG was going to be just a crazier christmas colored plasma gun.

>It’s not even that the plasma gun “is bad”
The chainsaw isn't bad either, but both of those examples are weapons that are worse than something else that might be on the map.
>It also just seems like a perpetual balancing nightmare
There's already balance between the shotgun and chaingun. The chaingun has higher DPS at the cost of ammo, while the shotgun is more efficient and deals higher immediate damage at the cost of not being able to do so over longer periods of time.
>>
>>10860721
Man I once made one of the lower down GZDoom devs go apeshit just by saying that I keep numerous old versions of it because the most recent builds don't run all of the mods ever.

They genuinely believe it's as backwards compatible as it gets and that any mods that don't work are edge cases that nobody should be playing anyway since the mod dev hasn't even had the decency to update it.

The gap between shotguns and bullet weapons aren’t as extreme as the cell weapons, and that’s the thing: If the weapons are too different, the balance is fucked and I don’t think it works.

There's no significance to those markers. There might not be a significance to markers around patches at all, since they go to PNAMES anyway.
Splitting flats is also unnecessary.
>>
>>10861025
I don't think there's any actual function to it, just a way to separate patches and flats for different releases internally.

P1 and F1 contained patches and flats used only in the shareware while P2 and F2 included patches and flats used in the full (registered) release.

As for P3 and F3, Doom 2 was internally referred to as the "commercial" version, separate from the "registered" version, so that might be it.

The voxel stuff made me confused.. Anyway Cultic is a solid bumshoot. Not a ton of level variety but it's good for what it is.

I was initially really really offput how far it went into the ''crusty'' look, like okay, Blood is crusty as hell as well in places but Blood is never one note with it's textures or color scheme and the sprite art is very varied and pleasing. Still, Cultic is most def worth a shot.

Based. And same. This talk reminds me though, I think there were some games where you had to have a certain accuracy percentage to unlock something or get medals, maybe might've been like Medal of Honor Frontline or something and it did activate the gamerbrain to try and maximize the number of shots you could land on an enemy while keeping them alive etc. Or in some game dumping a duckton of rounds to an enemy that was not taking damage but counted as hits to drive the accuracy up.

Completely forgot the game though.

The difference between Doom and all of those is that Doom had a reputation for being ported, being available on the 32X, 3DO, Jaguar, PlayStation, Saturn and SNES by then. It's not unreasonable that somebody would have mistaken 64 for another one of these.

Other than the screenshots none of that can't be interpreted as an enhanced port of the PC Doom, and you'd have to be very familiar with Doom's maps to know just from the screenshots. Them repeatedly calling it a new 'version' of Doom doesn't help either.

I think a better explanation as to why nobody cared about Doom 64 at launch is because it was a singleplayer-only sprite-based game that released after Turok and a couple of months before Goldeneye. Nobody wanted to keep playing 2D games back then and it didn't even have deathmatch to keep people coming back.
>>
>>10861432
This. I was scanning the text for something saying something about redesigned levels but all I got was marketing jargon.

Nta, but my dumb teenage ass rented it expecting a port, was very pleasently surprised to see how different it was. The rental place in my town didn't have backsides to the cases, so no preview for me.
>>
>>10861439
I remember watching the Happy Video Game Nerd's video on DOOM 64, and something that he notes is that over time, D64 wound up aging more gracefully than Turok and Goldeneye did.

As for the singleplayer-only aspect, I think what happened was that as the years went on, people started looking at it for it was instead of comparing it to its contemporaries and realizing that it stood on its own merits just fine.
>>
>>10861453
>D64 wound up aging more gracefully than Turok and Goldeneye did.
It certainly did, because it ran much more nicely and had a more "normal" control scheme. But that's just after many years. Nobody minded the 10fps Goldeneye would run at during splitscreen back in the day.

Yeah, I can kind of relate to that. Bumping into odd bugs with no fixes on sight is also quite annoying. Overall, WRATH reminded me a lot about Arcane Dimensions in terms of how it played for me: it's great and all, but at some point playing through maps start to feel like a chore.

>I have no desire to replay Wrath on Outlander.
If you really want to get that achievement, you can type "skill 3" on the console in the Hub3 right before going to The Dreadful One. Allegedly it doesn't register straight away and you need to go from one map to another for the difficulty change to kick in.
Even then you might not miss out on much since Outlander difficulty might be still a bit borked.
>>10860318
>Does Cultic also count
Personally, Cultic just didn't click for me and I tried to give its demo a try twice. On the surface I should've really liked it, but I was done playing it after like 5 minutes like with Quake 2 (not a re-release version) after I beat it.
Does it count for you? Cultic seems interesting for you? Pick up a demo or grab a copy from somewhere out there and just try it.
>being obviously designed to be an unofficial Blood 2?
Actually, the dev cites Resident Evil 4 as the main inspiration. And that explains why I couldn't stick with Cultic since I never cared for any RE game.

You didn't always get to see the box though. Some just heard about it existing, some saw just the cartridge without any packaging but didn't get around to playing it. It featured some in Nintendo Power, but not everyone read that.

But I think also that a big part of it was that Doom (which it still basically is under the hood, just with a nitro and some sick rims), felt dated to many in a time period where there was a very strong focus on fully 3D shooters such as Goldeneye, a game which sold quite a lot on its famous multiplayer, something which Doom 64 was completely bereft of. James Bond and later Joanna Dark eclipsed the other N64 shooters pretty hard overall.

Doom 64 is a solid game which is well worth playing, but that's not always enough in a market which was very fixated on technology and novelty.
I think also that some people forget how fucking DARK the original release is, you absolutely MUST play at night with the lights off to be able to see it on a CRT TV, and I think that this aspect actually did hurt it some. People harp about Doom 3 being dark but at least it gives you a flashlight.
The rerelease upping the brightness a bit across the board I think was necessary to make the game more playable, the game being too dark was a mistake even by the level designers' own words, and it still remains a comfortable level of murky.

When I was a kid, by the time I saw advertisements for Doom64 on the TV, I had already played Mario64 (which came with the N64 IIRC) so Doom64 seemed dated for not being 3D. That's why I never played it until the rerelease, and it turns out it's very good, aside from some of the cryptic level puzzles that were part and parcel of playing video games in the 90s.

don't want to over analyze a meme too hard but I think the joke is there's a nuance between fast hopping with a purpose (to dodge, to reposition, or even to confuse the enemy) and fast hopping like a retard with adhd, and showcasing a real design difference between players of real old school boomer shooters and the newer wave of retro inspired modern shooters that end up trying too hard to make it feel fast and epic (alongside metal soundtrack, gorey finishers etc), when in reality a lot of people played og doom at a moderate pace, so there's a bit of meaning behind that meme

Tim’s still a douche but appreciate some of the fun irony at least. Much of my disdain has also been alleviated with the past few years of Q2 goodies.
>Q2 25th comes out, lots of good maps, solid AI improvements across all campaigns including some missing attacks
>Nightdive goes “hm, good idea” and develops Q2Kex with their own changes and more good maps
>more people get exposed to Q2 beyond the vanilla campaign
So many fun ways to play and develop for it these days.

I have a small, similar gripe with Quake as well. Part of my fledgling design document for my FPS project is your weapons absorb the souls of enemies you killed and their souls turn into bullets, pellets/shells, rockets, etc. depending on the weapon you use.

I found a dm map on a dzone disc that was based on a school not too far from me, but it predated columbine. Just for fun, I looked up the author on fb and messaged the first matching name. He actually responded and felt a bit shitty about having made a map about a school for doom, but it was because it was an area him and his buddies were familiar with, and they just wanted to play dm somewhere they knew. He didn't even know it was on a dzone disc. He was a bit miffed about having his map stolen and sold, but liked that it technically made him a published author. I think it brightened up his day a bit.

Like 99.9.8% of all school and workplace levels ever made for Doom were made for that reason, mostly before Columbine (the rest is low effort teenage edge).

His work being stolen by D!Zone is also an extremely common story, everything which Wizard Works sold on those compilation disks was just taken from the web without any permission, so he's one of thousands of victims of that. Because of of how many of those also contained soundbytes from movies and TV shows, Wizard Works basically stole people's Fair Use novelties to sell as actual Copyright Violations.
Best I can tell they managed to dodge trouble and get away with their theft.

Used to play the everliving shit out of it a while back. It's a great mod, although balance can get scuffed with some mods depending on your settings. Those boss drops are no joke. I haven't played it in a while though on account of it being absolute agony with Deathstrider. Everything deals plasma so you walk around constantly on fire with liquefied bones, requiring a completely different strategy. Should boot it up on my next run for shits and giggles. Also the CH dev is a gigachad. This is not a sponsored post, but he did Anastasia and Lilith's sprites so I am biased lol.

This but for Chex Quest
I know they don't infight in CQ3, but it makes more sense for flemoids to be able to reconstitute each other's goo than for demons to heal each other with fire and bullets.

if anyone been thinking of running deimos with the aphrodite reskin but is too lazy to fix some of the messy visuals, i've nailed together a mildly scuffed patch that does that.
minus the BFG particles, but i like the new teleportfog.

Got most of the code done but I can't test it right now. The way it works is if a monster kills another in deliberate infighting — meaning not accidental friendly fire that just happens to result in a kill — it'll gain progress towards a promotion. The amount is currently two times the victor's spawn health, and how much progress it gains depends on the monster that died. Currently a monster can only get promoted up to the strongest monster on the map (health-based, dead or alive). Have yet to see how it plays in practice. Also need to add the sfx and vfx. This has potential if fine-tuned properly, such as requiring more and more progress for each subsequent promotion. The only thing I'm worried about is the edge cases. Those are still TBD.
>>
>>10864902
Your idea has a lot of flaws, and I'll be honest: you will not succeed. It's impossible to implement it the way you want. I wish you luck anyway
>>
>>10864912
idgi that sounds like a very simple mod compared to the shit i've seen out there for doom.
>>
>>10864912
Why? I definitely expect it to be very rough around the edges initially and requiring balancing depending on monster count, but why would it be impossible?

- how would you establish that an infight is provoked?
- how would you balance it? have you taken into consideration custom monsters? wads? partial conversions?
- literally useless mod anyway, because an imp becoming a revenant is not game changer, and it is actually confusing
- some monster encounters are designed with a certain placement in mind, depending on the kind of monster.
etc.

but again, i wish you luck and i hope you make the mod so i will play it. unfortunately, we already know it's not happening

>determining infighting
>Monster.Target == MonsterThatDied && MonsterThatDied.Target == Monster
Oh no, it's that easy. Hell, even half of that condition already satisfies the infight check if not more reliably.

>custom monsters, wads, etc.
Those don't do anything super special or radical to be a problem. And the mod already works with those out of the box on a technical level. I'll have to think about any problems with those if I actually encounter them.

>useless mod
Ok and? It's obviously not meant to be some super srs bizness mod. Plus I'm literally only doing this because I code for fun.

>placement balance
Only valid point. I don't have a ready solution, but it's also not something I realistically expect to be a constant problem given the number of maps that actually do autistic monster placement. It's definitely something to consider that MAY happen in some edge case. 95% of the time it'll work fine. Until proven wrong, as always.

>it's not happening
Watch me, faggot. You underestimate my power.

Here's another idea, if the monster killed you he will get promoted even further, and this upgrades should persist through save-load after respawn.
Also if you don't kill these monsters they will follow you to the next levels through the whole wad until you kill them.

>imagine a mod with less and less supplies the more you die
it might sound good on paper, but it's extremely frustrating in practice. people want to see number go up, not down
>>
>>10865164
We're reaching levels of fuckery that this engine just isn't built for. Transferring actors between levels is a nightmare, more so if done in the persistent manner that you describe. Can't be done reliably.
>>
>>10865171
This, you end up looking at some serious fuckery with storing shit in the ini and that tends to piss people off when they figure out you've further bloated the fuck out of the single ini they use for all gameplay shit.
>>
>>10865185
Bloating is the least of the worries here. Lots of people are using War Trophies without much of a care. The real stopping problem is that you cannot properly serialize objects into a nosave CVar and restore them later. The way the game is designed is that everything not a player or an inventory item on the player gets shithammered when unloading the world unless it's a hub, but you can't just dynamically change the hub properties of a map either.
>>
>>10865168
>extremely frustrating
i feel there's a market for it but i dunno if they play retro shooters much
>>
>>10865260
There totally is, but running into a point where ammo is too scarce will really drag the encounters out. That said, I enjoyed lots of Hideous Destructor with some “ammo scarcity” settings though the Ugly as Sin addon.

Haven't field tested it extensively yet, but for now I can confirm it works with Babel monsters without any noticeable hiccups. Bear in mind there's a decent chance it may underperform on start. Testing in a semi-controlled environment doesn't really give superb results. Will make adjustments based on feedback, though I recommend playing this with mods that keep your vanilla speed so you can actually trigger infighting more consistently in the first place.
