Best American adaptation of a Japanese gaming property since Ms. Pac-Man?

I'd say so. One of the best racers of that console gen.

Apocryphal. There's no source for that idea except some shitty American mag that didn't even name Reiko's creator.
>>
>>10877453
It's most certainly true since American mags would read Japanese mags and then re-use the info often without giving a source. Reiko's face is very androgynous and looks like this guy.
>>
>>10877462
After all this time, 24 years, you'd think there would be some corroborating source on that urban legend. There's nothing on Japanese Wikipedia.

>After all this time, 24 years, you'd think there would be some corroborating source on that urban legend. There's nothing on Japanese Wikipedia.

1. Jap wiki is horribly ignored to the point of uselessness. There's a handful of useful users citing mags/books but they're the minority.
2. There's very little Japanese magazines scanned. It's a huge pain in the ass, and a niche market since most people just want to bask in nostalgia of their childhood UK/USA gamer mags.

There's a huge amount of interviews, and profiles that just don't have anyone scanned it.

As a fan of Ridge Racer games, I admit that they have rather mediocre gameplay and are carried hard by striking visuals, music and style... of which RR64 has none.
>>
>>10877475
That's why I want a modern game, the idea of what RR was but not the reality. Ridge Racer 99 - massively multiplayer, 60fps, all the tracks fro mthe previous games.

Or even Ridge Racer 4 99. Namco is sitting on gold now.
>>
>>10877471
Don't under-estimate the laziness of people. It is entirely possible the answers are sitting right in front of us in the form of some kind of a guide book, but no one's bothered to look or translate it.

For what it's worth the shmup fag has a bunch of Ridge racer interviews/profiles, and may post them.

Incite was a mag put out by a German company in the US (along with a PC-focused version) that tried to be a "lad mag" type of publication. It lasted less than a year.
>>
>>10877416
It should be noted Anons bring this up to derail Ridge Racer threads, and this one is successful
>>
>>10877497
well this thread was dead before that got brought up, because nobody cares about RR64
>>
>>10877497
It seems too detailed, and it lines up with the timeline of when Motomi Katayama joined. The series originally did not have a cheerleader character, and she came about in Rage Racer, the game he directed. Then she gets more exposure on his next game: RR4. RR4 is also when she has the most masculine appearance (she quite looks like an asian cross dresser there). Afterwards, in subseuqent games she's more feminine looking.

So it wouldn't be too crazy if for RR4 he just based Reiko's new CGI model on his own face. The article is likely garbling something from the original Japanese source.
>>

>>10877462

Artists do shit like this all the time, doesn't mean Reiko's a trap. Coom artists often use their own hands and feet as reference for their characters since they're readily available and easy to pose. Bear that in mind the next time you rub one out to virtually any drawn cartoon girl.
I honestly don't see the resemblance either. Even if he did use his face for a basic reference, it's obviously not a scan or copy. Reiko's jawline is incredibly feminine, Katayama's isn't. Katayama has the traditional masculine brow and neck, Reiko doesn't, etc. Reiko has a pronounced nose ridge (heh heh, ridge) Katayma's is wide, flat and masculine.
I am not coping, this is reason, this what rational thought looks like.
>>
>>10877542
>Artists do shit like this all the time, doesn't mean Reiko's a trap.

Yeah, the character is definitely female and I suspect there's some mangling what the original Japanese source says. Many of these guys couldn't read or speak Japanese that well, so they'd often make basic errors. My first guess is that there was no "scanning', but instead using his own face as a basic reference model when then heavily feminized.

>>10877524
I care.
>>

What's the deal with this one? Why was there no japanese version?
>>
>>10877689
It was made by NST under license from Namco for the US market
>>
>>10877689
It was made by americans. The same people who later did soulless Gamecube sequels to Wave Race and 1080.
Now thinking about it, what if RR64 was made by Wave Race 64 devs instead? It would be a much better game, at least in style.
>>
>>10877718
>>10877705
so this version is soulless?
>>
>>10877491

Incite was going for that "maxim of gaming;' vibe, and I am not afraid to admit that I use to buy this rag. There were two variants, a console version on incite and a PC version. And the PC version actually had some baller PC demo discs. For the time, I could appreciate what they were trying to do.
>>
>>10877727
In the same vein as Wave Race and 1080 are soulful on N64 but soulless on Gamecube. If you never cared about this thing then you'd be okay with RR64. It's an adequate arcade racing game, just not as good as Rage Racer, RRT4 or RRV.
>>
>>10877727
It was trying... and it was aiming ot be an amalgamation of all the previous RR games as a consolation prize. I think they should have also done this with other 3D games including racing games and fighters. ie Tekken 64, Street Fighter EX 64, etc.
>>
>>10877705
>It was made by NST under license from Namco for the US market

I think it was some attempt by Nintendo to get a few PS1 games over to the N64. So they picked up the license from Namco and put NST to work on making a port based mostly on Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution, with some RRT4 elements thrown in. The game does feature one original course, which has a desert theme. It was a pretty late N64 release from 1999. Came out pretty close to the N64 port of Reisdent Evil 2, and I owned both of them. The game was also ported to the DS as Ridge Racer DS. Not a bad arcade racer. Also has 4-player split screen. Which was a nice addition.
>>
>>10877727
rr64 is one of the rare Ridge Racers that does not have its soundtrack sold on CD. it starts from there.
>>
WHY ARE RIDGE RACER GAMES SO FUCKING SLIPPERY, I FEEL LIKE I'M ON ICE EVERY TIME I TAKE A CORNER
>>
>>10877751
>Tekken 64
Thinking about it... they could port Tag 1 to N64. Not having enough RAM for the tag mechanic was one of the reasons the port was moved from PS1 to PS2.
>>10877778
They are not slippery like at all. In fact the cars never slip or skid in RR games until you initiate a drift.
>>
>>10877765
>It was a pretty late N64 release from 1999

I meant to say it's a 2000 release. It also came out on the same day as my birthday.

It was released in the US around the same time RRV was released in Japan. It's not surprising that they didn't want to release RR64 in Japan.

That's right, RR64 came out so close to the PS2 release of RRV, that it probably wasn't worth releasing in Japan for the N64. It is interesting that Ridge Racer DS never got a Japanese release either.

It doesn't matter if it's true or not, that intro in R4 is too good.
>>
I love the N64, I love the Ridge Racer.

But for RR64 there is nothing wrong.
the graphics, being less aliased takes away from the charm compared to the PS1 versions.
the cars look like ugly toys (like all the racing games on N64 in the end...)
the music is rubbish, not a single one stands out.

they should have put a Mario Kart's circuit just to have some originality.

Well that and the N64 was mostly popular in the West anyway, even if RRV wasn't out yet it would barely sell over there.

Couldn't that be because Namco didn't make it rather than the soundtrack sucking? because it doesn't

Why would there be citation needed over something that was published in various game magazines in the 90s? If you want to see it, the magazines are available on Archive.org.

What's the difference between the 2 collision modes and the 3 drifting modes?
