Not really sure how it got the rep, but there are way harder shmups on NES alone, and it doesn't even hold a candle to the harder arcade shmups.Anyways to the topic, Battletoads, Lost Levels, and Adventure Island are all really hard. Ghosts N Goblins is also hard but moreso because it's jank. I'm sure there are other harder games, but these are definitely the hardest of well known NES games that live up to their difficulty.

>What is Micro Machines?I have beaten about 350 NES/FC games. The hardest I've beaten were 1943, Adventure Island and Kung-Fu Heroes. Hector isn't harder than 1943. I haven't played Starforce though. Battletoads is nothing.The hardest I've played that I couldn't beat were Micro Machines and Motocross Champion, but for the later it was only the 8th track I couldn't beat and you can restart just that track over and over if you want until you can get it right; so Micro Machines is infinitely harder to beat.I admit I must not be very good at racing games however.
The Mexican Runner beat Battletoads in under 40 minutes. He also didn't take that long to beat Adventure Island. I would agree 1943 is tough. Japanese Star Force isn't that bad; the US version is much harder. Ikari Warriors is only tough if you're thickheaded like TMR and refuse to use the game continue code. I would say Section Z is pretty bad although some disagree. Might & Magic due to the sheer length of it.

This changed with certain games that came to the west where the western version was some unbalanced pos, but for the most part the overseas is the same or very similar. But no 1943 and Section Z are not hard, unless you've just never played a shmup before in your life. Putting 1943 in a higher tier than Battletoads is just ridiculous.
