Yes, get Knossos https://knossosnet.github.io/Knossos-Release-Page/ to install Freespace Open and related mods. Use the FreeSpace Port for FS1 and Silent Threat Rebort for its expansion.
It even supports VR now.

I guess he meant space sims that came out after Freespace 2, which are indeed not many.
It's true that it's the best, but it was also practically the big last one (considering Starlancer and Klingon Academy came just a few months later).
The X-Wing Alliance moddding community is still going strong though. They even remade the whole Tie Fighter.
