Mario Bros. is NOT referring to Mario and Luigi, even though they are in fact brothers. It's referring to the other Marios in Mario's family.
>"Jumpman" Mario - the one featured in Donkey Kong and DK Jr. - the most dickish of the Marios, as indicated by his behavior in Jr; never goes to Mushroom Kingdom
>"Brooklyn" Mario - first appeared in the arcade Mario Bros game, never goes to the Mushroom Kingdom in the games; a bit surly, but still mostly good natured; while ultimately non-canon to the videogames, this is the version which journeyed to the Mushroom Kingdom in the Dic cartoons, where a pre-MB version is depicted by Captain Lou
>"Super" Mario - this is the main Mario, the jolly Bing Bing Wahoo man, who has been the star of all the mainline Mario games since SMB
"Illumination" Mario is non-canon, but combines aspects of Brooklyn and Super. "Jumpman" Mario has yet to make a return in official media.

The current implication is that Mario and Luigi were born in the Mushroom Kingdom but moved to New Donk City for a time and worked various odd jobs (Wrecking Crew, DK and DK Jr., and Mario Bros.). All they really did was drop the real-world connection. The Odyssey artbook revealed that a scrapped idea for NDC was being able to visit Mario's original plumbing shop.

>>The original Mario Bros. game (not Super) actually does take place in New York
No manual of the original game remotely states this, same with Donkey Kong. This was actually a retroactive retcon by Miyamoto in an interview in the 2010s, LONG after the Brooklyn origin became popularized thanks to localization and the adaptions.

Basically the Brooklyn canon didn't become adopted by Nintendo until they needed Mario's voice to emulate it in Super Mario 64, since they wanted Charles Martinet to emulate that sound.

This wouldn't be the first time Nintendo & Miyamoto would adopt localization shit into the main canon. However with New Donk City and Nintendo's refusal to reference Brooklyn in any NoJ Mario game it's porbably retconned again.
>>
>>10916001

Not him, but New Donk City makes it very clear that the original Donkey Kong took place there, with a lot of old Donkey Kong Arcade art littered around:

>This is graffiti drawn on a building in "New Donk City". Nostalgic for nostalgic people! ? It’s a painting related to the history of the city.

Pauline makes a direct reference to her getting kidnapped by an ape

While not direct confirmations, it's made clear that New Donk City was inspired by the "Big City" in Donkey Kong 94 (gameboy), the first world

>Mr. Koizumi: For New Donk City, we created the visuals with a city theme. ``Come to think of it, we used to have a game that was set in a city. Come to think of it, Mario was also in it.'' ``Right?'' and Pauline's name came up like a word association game.

>Motokura: Originally, I had an image of the city and "Donkey Kong." The same goes for Big City in GB's Donkey Kong. Therefore, there is a connection between Donkey Kong and the city.

>"The first area, Big City. The tall buildings of the metropolitan cityscape bear a close resemblance to those of New Donk City."
- The Art of Super Mario Odyssey, page 361

We have no confirmation of the settings of other early titles (Like Wrecking Crew, Mario Bros.) but there's various similar connections that are made

It was the Nintendo America guys who came up with him, they were working out of an office in the Empire State Building and based him on their landlord, who was a fat Italian American dude. Miyamoto ran with the idea but had no idea what the fuck an Italian American was and thought the accent was unappealing to kids, so they went ahead with Martinet's wacky borderline racist Italian voice because Miyamoto thought it was hilarious.

God you're fucking stupid. Even with languages like Vietnamese, which are extremely tonal, people from different regions have different accents - to the point where northerners and southerners can sometimes have a hard time understanding eachother. Also you hear people talking about different accents in Japan in Japanese media all the time.
>>10917787
When learning a radically different language, people often tend to adopt elements of the accent of the region they are living in or the teacher they have, but their original accent will still come out here and there unless they have become totally fluent.

Mario is literally from Brooklyn as per Miyamoto.

>—I noticed that Mario speaks with an Italian accent in this game.

>Miyamoto: There’s no particularly detailed background or anything, but yeah, it’s a given that Mario is an Italian-American from Brooklyn, New York. That voice was actually done by a professional voice actor. He did Mario’s voice five or six years ago, at a video game event. By the way, Mario talks a lot more in the American version of Mario 64. He says “Okie Dokie!” and more. Peach also speaks. We had more time before the American release, so we improved the game.
