>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/Retroid official websites

>Best Brands
Retroid (Well built, powerful, but $100-200 range), Anbernic (Balanced price, power and build quality, avoid the RG Nano), Powkiddy (Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes), Miyoo (One hit wonder), TrimUI: (Good build quality, shitty software, good price).

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 300$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Before you buy
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering. You better have bare basic desktop knowledge on how to unzip files and put them in folders. We are not here to teach you how.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

>>

I heard Tomato OS is a bit outdated by now. I think the best option right now is stock but with extra enhancements like the better DS/PSP and portmaster additions. Crossmix seems like it's going to be pretty good too but it's still early and not perfected yet.

Phonefags are disgusting Neanderthals who probably don't even emulate games, because if they did they wouldn't be recommending mobile phones over dedicated gaming devices like the swine that they are!

a phone is something that you practically need to own if you want to function in a modern society, a chinkheld is not.
it's cheaper to just buy a controller attachment for your phone, it wastes less resources as well. there's no reason to duplicate the functions of the SoC, display, speakers, etc. inside the controller, making it a chinkheld.
>>
>>11028589
>a phone is something that you practically need to own if you want to function in a modern society

>>
>>11028596
>maybe some kind of dedicated device?

>>
>>11028639
so which one is it? are phones essential to function in a modern society or is $50 to not have to worry about draining your phone battery a waste of money?
>>
>>11028642
I don't see how those contradict each other, zhang. You don't have to waste an extra 50$ on a shitty “dedicated device” that can only play up to gba games, you can charge your phone and if you are that worried about your battery there are portable batteries for less than $50.
>>
>>11028654
>you can charge your phone
i can charge my phone when i'm outside without a dedicated device like a powerbank (or a handheld, either using it to charge my phone or saving my phone's battery by playing on it)? where do you live where that's possible?
>You don't have to waste an extra 50$ on a shitty “dedicated device” that can only play up to gba games
$50 devices do up to psp and light dreamcast games with a battery that lasts 6/8 hours depending on screen brightness and the game you're playing

the controls on that one are almost as bad, tiny sticks with tiny travel that can't click, stacked shoulder buttons with too little space in-between, shitty d-pad

I got a Famicom clone handheld from my GF and it's fun, the battery life's not good at all and the cable to connect it to the TV doesn't work, but it has a 2nd controller that, thankfully, works well, and as someone who grew up with a Famicom, a clone console to be more exact, booting this up to see that it has "400 in 1" that are just a few of the same ROMs repeated... warmed my heart.

She told me she was upset because she found a video on TikTok for a better handheld after she had already bought this one, it was a Miyoo Mini Plus video, I told her it was fine, and it really is.

I mean, being able to load up ROMs is nice, but I do that on my smartphone already, with a good telescopic controller, but this? It's something my setup can't replicate... a comfortable nostalgia.

I'm so autistic that I can't make my mind up on what my first retro portable should be, and I've already missed some of the better prices during this AliExpress sale. I'm mostly just looking at the devices below $60, the choices are overwhelming. I love the DMG Game Boy aesthetic of the Miyoo Mini Plus and RG35XX Plus, and I am primarily interested in GB-GBA emulation for these kind of devices. The Miyoo looks too damn small, but apparently has the best software. The RG35XX Plus looks more comfortable and with better performance, but the software isn't as good. RG35XXH and TSP have analog sticks if I did decide to dabble with N64/Dreamcast and even PC streaming, but I do prefer the vertical shape of the Miyoo/RG35 Plus.

So this is how people fall down the rabbit hole of owning like 20 of these fucking things? Fuck me, I can't even decide on one.
>>
>>11029372
If you're deadset on vertical but might dabble in DC and streaming, 405v is the only real option imo. People were saying you can get one for sub-$100 in the aliexpress sale atm.

R36S is shit except for the screen. The thing is, it's $20 for an RK3326 with analogs which is amazing. It has all the great CFW from when the handheld revolution started with the ORDROID-GO Advance.

If you want a cheap vertislop just for GB/GBC/GBA, the RG35XX Plus is probably one of the better ones even if the CFW selection isn't great right now.

I tried out PS1 eboots on my PSP, and is it just me, or do these run way smoother here than they do on my Anbernig? I know PSP is running it natively and not emulating it, and that native games run more efficiently than emulation, but I thought that the 35XX+ chip had enough raw power to overcome it. The scaling looks good too; I thought full-screen would look like ass due to the lack of integer scaling, but the filter they use to smooth it out is subtle enough that the text is still legible. And they even have fully mappable inputs and the game manuals! If it weren’t for the complete lack of storage, I’d play all my PS1 games on this thing instead.
>>

Literally as I said. Common sense prevails.

That looks so uncomfortable to play on, even ignoring the bizarre aspect ratio used there. Why do these companies hate having the D-pad on top when the chipset is barely powerful enough for 3D emulation...
>>
>>11032783
This may or may not be related to an issue where some retroarch cores using the allwinner SoC need a shader enabled to prevent wierd framepacing

>>
>>11032932
I'm lazy to not properly setup it on retroarch with shaders (there's a beta of duck that should've shaders too), so I use:
>gpu renderer: vulkan
>resolution scale: 2x
>texture filtering: nearest-neighbor
>true color rendering: off
>geometry correction: off
>aspect ratio: 4:3
>downsampling: box
>integer upscaling: off
>linear upscaling: on
>scaled dithering: on

Test it with Silent Hill, it should be unfucked in the dark alley.

How's the Retroid Pocket 2S? Price seems decent for the specs at first glance. Primarily interested in playing dedicated handheld stuff. Though, as I understand, PSP games are best played on a 544p display (for the 2x scaling).

>I can't play retro games without retroachievements anymore.
You could never play retro games to begin with and are a self-admitted zoomer who didn't play his first video game until after 2005 due to your age. You need the little notifications to encourage you to enjoy the media you're choosing to consume. Even in 2005 it was well-known that achievements literally only existed as a means for publishers to gauge what content customers are consuming so that sequels can waste less resources on content people don't play, ie; single player campaigns in Call of Duty titles. You're now admitting that you cannot "enjoy" playing video games unless you're getting the simulation of being part of that corporate process. Holy fuck. What is a person supposed to say to you when you're self-admittingly like this? Even suggesting a break won't remedy how fucking retarded you are.
>>
>>11033285
Fun fact: All those video games that had achievements for starting the game that idiots meme'd on twenty years ago were literally there just to see how many copies of a game that were purchased were actually being played. I think Bamco did it first with Soul Calibur 4.
>>
>There are ZERO achievements for difficult self-imposed challenges or restrictions that players wouldn't otherwise do
This seems like an untapped market
>>
>>11030161
Sauce on game? I think you just unearthed a caved memory from me
>>
>>11033296
How the fuck would you "market" it?
Anyone wanting to do a self-imposed challenge would have to already to the challenge in order to make it an achievement. Anyone wanting to do another person's self-imposed challenge would already be doing it without the fucking ding at the end notifying them that they did it as they'd already be invested enough into the challenge to know whether they did it or not.
What are you even talking about? What are you even asking for? Holy fucking shit, you attention-deficit zoomers are so fucking stupid.

This, most people nowadays completely forget that cheevos were initially designed for data mining (see how many people reach certain parts of the game), and, in many cases are still used like that.
>>
>>11033304
>How the fuck would you "market" it?
By doing it, since apparently nobody has done it outside of gauging interest as you claimed, and it would be a fun extra and draw attention to the game since it would be unique.
>Anyone wanting to do a self-imposed challenge would have to already to the challenge in order to make it an achievement.
Yes, developers typically make sure what they're asking of players is possible.
>another person's self-imposed challenge
In this case, and what I was referring to, would be a challenge imposed by the game makers.
By "self imposed," I meant that you'd have to go out of your way to do it yourself as it's not required, and doing it doesn't change anything except for having the achievement.
>What are you even talking about?
Achievements for video games.
>What are you even asking for?
I wasn't asking for anything.

>Game developers have NEVER made any achievements to give a mark of distinction showing that one has completed a difficult challenge.
>Achievements are ONLY for checking what parts of the game players play.
>>
>>11033271
Really good, but while it has enough juice for all PSP and a great d-pad and sticks, obviously playing it 4:3 won't be a great time.

Remember that weird Sugar Cube handheld? They have a working production unit with an actual D-pad now. You have to skip to around the 5:35 and the 8-8:07 mark to see how the rotation works for enlarging whats on screen. Seems to be novel, if a very expensive handheld. Hard to see many people flocking to this when the Powkiddy RGB30 and 20SX are cheaper options with their own 1:1 screens. This just seems tailored to those who want expensive vertislops like the Ayaneo DMG

One thing that's been enjoyable for me, at least as someone who uses their old smartphone as a handheld, has been the "bigblur.glslp" shader in RetroArch. I'm sure 16:9 handhelds aren't as bad with this... but the negative space that a 19.5:9 display has when running 4:3 content is insane, I think having wide telescopic controllers also add to this, 25cm wide device, 10cm of actual screen.

I know many might dislike this sort of look, but I see it often when vertical videos are "converted" to horizontal, and I've always liked the effect on those, I wish it had more settings, but it's great.

P.S. Sonic Chaos is decent... if you go for 100%, because I did a run where my only concern was getting to the end, it was so easy and shallow... good for starters I guess, but still, go for 100%.
>>
>>11034619
it's time to buy a 4:3 'held
>>
>>11034623
I mean, that works, and perhaps it'd be ideal... I get why most people prefer that, but my current setup works and let's me play what I want to play fine enough for now, so I don't see myself in the near future spending anything on a handheld unless something here breaks, time will tell.

I'd probably get a R36s since it's cheaper than most other options, or something else that's as cheap... but horizontal, as it's more comfortable.

You're either going to get ripped off by Amazon resellers or need a time machine to order it 3 weeks ago.
>>
>>11035038
is it an amazon giftcard? Every seller cleared out their immediate SP inventory, but theres lots of 28xx!

You sure it was removed? Doesn't sound like something Batocera would do, especially on low power devices.

It's funny to me that it was removed, meanwhile it's the only emulator that I'm aware of that supports the gba wireless adaptor.

Correct, and it's not like just having the gpSP core is bloat either, how silly. I'm guessing Knulli must restore it.

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to emuhelds. I see that a lot of them advertise SD cards with pre-loaded games. Am I correct to presume that, if no SD card option is selected, buyers would have to source the roms/isos/whatever themselves? Would the pre-loaded roms have patches/hacks?
>>
>>11035872
The bundled SD cards are almost all cheap garbage that will randomly fail on you after a few read/write cycles. The pre-loaded stuff is usually junk, and sourcing roms takes you about 5 minutes these days, you can find a million rom packs of varying quality if you don't want to sort through a fullset.
>>
>>11035872
a lot of the linux based ones (most of them) have the os + software in the sd card and wont boot without it. usually "no sd card" would mean no extra ones included, but comes with the boot card. if it advertises 500000 games, then it'll have it on the included card, and yes, a lot has romhacks and shit included.
>>
>>11026489
so for those who have the TrimUI Smart Pro, how would you personally rate it's ability to handle Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, and PSP emulation, either with stock firmware(though I've heard you can tweak some things with stock to get some additional performance) or with whatever CFW is available for it
>>
>>11035851
405M, Retroid 2S, and Retroid 4P have touch screens. Those are the only ones I can speak on since I own them. There might also be hacks on CDR to bypass the touch shit, I know at least 1 DS Cv game does.

I dont think the hinge will ever break unless you want to break it. That said, on my specific model the left half of the hinge has accumulated small scratch marks from the opening and closing. Finally beat Devastator (Mega CD) on my RG Arc. Really cool game, but god DAMN that last boss was a cunt. There's also no checkpoints in the entire level for some reason. So when you inevitably die on any of his phase, you have to re-spend 10 minutes or w/e fighting the two bosses right before him that take forever to kill hoping you don't take any real damage.

Grab the $2 & $4 coupons from the event for items over $19 and $29
Search R36S and add it to your cart
Go to the discount finder (coins area) and search R36S and _click_ on a few of them
Go to super discount finder (earn more coins) and see if there's any good deals on the R36S
No good super discounts? Go back to the discount finder, find the best deal for an R36S that isn't from a scam store, and order it.

33.57 handheld with a 18% coin discount is 33.57 * (1 - .18) = 27.53. Or something like that.

Alright lads.

based
>>
>>11037250
Pull, the screen is superp for it.
Speakers also deliver.
I specifically bought it just for these two systems and i am not dissapointed.
Downside is the blocky form, it may become uncomfortable after time.
I need to try a Grip at some point.
>>
>>11037250
systems rgb30 is good at (1:1 par, integer scale, integer scale override): gb/gbc, pc engine, snes, nes, neo geo pocket/color, 3:4 shmups, some arcade games, gamegear, master system, atari but haven't tried
systems that are straight 4:3: genesis, ps1, n64, saturn, most arcade games, 6th gen

not all games are passable with 1:1 par, integer scale, integer scale override but many/most are
>>
>>11037267
Excellent. The form factor does seem a little weird but I know a few people with 3D printers to remedy that if it's too bad.

>>11037269
Doing the lord's work. GB/GBC is my main focus but knowing SNES is going to also be served well is a nice plus.
>>
>>11037269
Also x68000, it's actually a perfect 1:1 aspect ratio in PAR.
>b-but I don't know what to play
You can start with Cho Ren Sha, Zugya, Castlevania, and then explore more from there if you liked them. The library is actually pretty great. Wonderswan is also a good use case imo because of the vertical switching. Master System is actually 4:3 in PAR, tho.
>>
>>11037250
I like it, but I don't feel comfortable recommending it at all.
