How gimmicky should gameplay mods be? Should some kind of mechanical novelty drive a player's interest compared to simply having a robust selection of guns?
>>12322996I think it varies. For me I prefer gameplay mods that either introduce some novel new mechanics, or at the very least some really interesting new guns. You gimme another set of conventional weapons and I've mentally checked out.
>>12322996There's no one size fits all rule, it's just whatever works for that mod.
I just played Marathon 1 and it's legit one of the worst FPSes I have ever played. Even 2 is about only as good as some of Doom's less well known total conversions like Hacx imhoWhy did it get so popular
>>12323246>Why did it get so popularMacfags didn't have any other choice + storyfags were really impressed by wordswordswords computer terminals to read in the 90s.
>>12323246Back in the day there was not a whole lot to play on a Mac. Not that stuff like Glider were bad games, but a cool 3D shooter that you could play on a Mac? Certainly was a step up.
>>12323246It wasn't popular. Only people with macs played it.
>>12323246Same reason a lot of not so good games got notoriety, anon: people got interested in them much later after the fact because of things that happened later down the line, such as people talking about it, youtubers making videos on them and fans of games that share some DNA with it (Halo in this case) wanting to see where everything began. It's not too different from the Nu Doom-classic Doom pipeline.I like Marathon because it's different, flawed and strange but also strangely competent in spite of its insane ambition. Also, the title music in Durandal and Infinity makes me cum.
>>12323246it was never popular and did not get popular except for a fluke that lasted just one month after troongaloregaming released his story overview videos
>>12323246Samsara made the officer playable over Caleb
>>12323246>Why did it get so popularHave you heard of Halo?
>>12323278IIRC that was because he was sufficiently distinct from the other samsara characters to be worth putting in. Caleb was too similar to someone elseSomething like that anyway, I can't remember the details, it was so long ago. I remember the usual troll trying to pretend to be a samsara developer and announce Caleb as the next character. There's got to be some other old schooler around who can fill in the details or correct me
>>12323281This is a good and useful magazine article for younger fans of the game as it gives an easy retort to the inevitable playground teasing suffered by the minority interest holder."Why would you play that shit instead of Doom dumbass, it's so slow" "Doom isn't proper 3D you fucking cunt, now get on your knees and suck my cock" and so on in the usual way teenage platform zealots yell at each other, we've all been through it.
Anons, I wanna hear your opinion.I'm going to make a simple Doom mod and wish to know if making my starting pistol hit harder, occasionally pierce 2-3 monsters and use its own ammo sounds alright. It'll be my first time using Decorate and/or ZScript too.
>>12323302Depends, what do you have planned for the rest of the arsenal? That, and how do you get more ammo for the pistol?
>>12323302Yeah sounds fine. How do you get ammo for it? Is it just powerful but in limited supply so you have find something else? I mean the thing about the original pistol is that it is so weak that you want to upgrade it as soon as possible, so you need to retain that property of making the player want to find an upgrade. Powerful but limited and (nearly?) unreplenishable ammo seems like a way to do that.
>>12323285Tl;dr of it was Duke already sort of fills in the role that Caleb does, Caleb's weapons are ludicrously overpowered compared to other shooters at the time, specially his shotgun and tommygun even when not dual wielded and certain specifics like how Caleb's TNT expanding explosion works or the Voodoo doll just weren't able to be replicated properly in skulltag/zandronum at the time
>>12323310Thank you, I thought it was Duke to whom he was considered too similar, and that it's hard to reproduce Blood physics in other engines. But I wasn't sure and I feared angering some obsessive fan who would proceed to shit up the thread over it.
>>12323305It's nothing too removed from vanilla, I'm not very creative. Pistol ammo would occasionally spawn alongside ammo for the chaingun replacement (so anywhere vanilla bullets appear), and be guaranteed in backpacks as well. The only weapon that doesn't correlate to vanilla is a rifle that lets you use the slot 4 ammo more accurately.>>12323306Answered above, definitely powerful and meant to be a bit of an ohshit gun you pull out. You'd only carry something like 50 bullets in reserve for it too.The theming of the mod is kinda like Doom happening in the late 80s/90s. Space exploration never progressed farther than launching satellites for radio communication, because the Korea war escalated into WW3 and once that ended, the death toll was so bad demons began invading the physical plane because they thought mankind would all die anyway. Suffice to say hell fucked around and found out long before any god had to lift a finger, even though they had plenty of people who showed up there in recent times because of man's many ways of killing his peer. So you know, something like Trench Crusade if it wasn't retarded and had a cold war background.I think the protagonist would be like a commando sent to stamp out the remaining hell-infested areas, of which there are more than you'd expect. If I had it in me I'd like for him to have a guardian angel as a companion, even though he is (supposedly) an atheist after all he's been through.
>>12323343This sounds really ambitious, a lot more than just a "simple Doom mod" as you originally called it. I hope you don't burn yourself out.
>>12323343Have you looked into the tone of EYE or Quasimorph?Quasimorph is probably my favorite depiction of 'commandos vs demons' since it goes heavily into the mythological nature of the demons
>>12323383Oh, the lore may be ambitious but the coding and assets really are not. I'm just aiming for something a bit past Final Doomer but not so far like Brutal Doom, in fact most of the sprites are ready to go since I have an unfinished mod or two to pilfer from. The guardian angel bit is just a hypothetical since I'm surprised you never see something with overt Christian themes in Doom since that's...you know. The foil to hell and all?>>12323397Very familiar with EYE, never finished it but I can quote a fair few of its very French insults and strangeness by heart. Quasimorph is new to me, however, will look into it.
GOOD MORNING MOTHERFUCKERS, IT'S THAT TIME OF THE WEEK AGAIN: SCREENSHOT SATURDAY!! WHAT THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON? Maps, mods, sprites? Now's a good time to post that shit!
>>12323435I've been making models to make some sprites, that and it's fun.
>>12323472We real Mega Man Zero hours now.
>>12323473Bitch maybe.
>>12322996I like it when gameplay mods have some degree of progression to them beyond just obtaining all weapon replacements + the backpack, and have been since Project Brutality 2.03>Guncaster/Trailblazer's weapon upgrades and items.>DRLA and DP Insurrection's modpacks.>Dusted Pandemonia's monster pack spawning stronger monsters the further you go.>Lt. Typhon's ability pickups that also increase her maximum punch speed.
>>12323473>Scabbard gunIs this going to be a new model for that smg you showed off last thread?
>>12322912I did not care for Call of The Void nor its recent Jam. Yes, it insists upon itself. It looks good and the enemies are unique but there's been a trend in Quake mods for years now where the appeal is the eye candy and not actual mechanics or level design. The QBJ3 is another great example that insists upon itself. They have several bugs that can be found right away with just the water draining mechanic on the first level Barnacle. Quake is a series where story doesn't matter but they keep trying to force it into the series and it's even cringier than expected. Not even in a fun shlock type of way. The enemies are annoying and don't fit the levels they are placed in which are often cramped that create terrible flow.
>>12323501Yeah. Though this is really more of a holster gun, the sword also provides a power source to shoot bullets and shit. There'll be a scabbard gun later on, but not for Deriver, and it'll actually be called that, because it's cool.
>>12323472Cool I can't wait to stick that in some hapless imp.
>>12323473Reveal your productivity trick, damnit. Is it adderall?
>>12323302No. This sounds like an upgrade for your starter pistol 1/4 to 1/3 of the way through the game. Not starting out right away. Either ammo will have to be limited to prevent it from being OP or it will have to be weak and therefore useless the second a better weapon is found which means it's a waste of time on your part to code it. It could work in the sense that you give it unlimited ammo and it has an alt fire that 1 shots lower enemies but is on a timer so it can't be spammed and abused. For example, it takes 4-5 shots to down a Doom shotgunner. The alt fire will kill them instantly and pierce enemies in line and takes 7-15 seconds to recharge.
>>12323504But enough talking about every slipseer map, because call of the void is better than brutalist jamAnd fuck back to your pisscord
>>12323514Love, mainly. That and I've been blessed(?) with too much time on my hands.
>>12323521>BetterNot by much. If I had to rank them: >CoV Jam>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>AIDS infested dogshit>>>>>>CoV>>>QBJ3.They all suck. Some less than others.
>>12323515Hm, you do have a point. I don't want to do infinite ammo for this mod and the upgrade idea could be cool as well, but I also strongly dislike intentionally weak starter weapons. Maybe it's best to just give it the piercing ability through a powerup that lasts for the level but keep the high damage profile, otherwise there's no reason to even have it in the game.
>>12323526Could always do what I've done in the past: Make the player earn the big dick power attacks through combat.
>>12323526I think keeping it as a perma upgrade works. Maybe make it a secret that players can find. If you find it, you keep it and enjoy the benefits. Debatable if you shouldactually get it later on in the game or it's just a secret upgrade. Like finding a RL on the first level and then in Level 5 vs it's the only RL in the episode.
>>12323529Go away, weebshitter.
>>12323523I don't want to get into a oneupmanship contest but I guarantee however much time you have on your hands, I have more. Yet I cannot force out more than one or two lines of code a day in between my brain forcing distractions on itself. Like yesterday was above average. I got two whole commits written. One was "1 file changed, 2 insertions(+)" the other "1 file changed, 1 insertion(+), 1 deletion(-)". And that by my standards is a good day! Tell me your secrets damnit
>>12323540>I am a lazy fuck. Tell me how to stop being a lazy fuck and don't tell me to just do it. You're not applying for a job in the modern job market, anon. It's a free hobby where you can develop as much skills as you want. Stop being a lazy fuck.
>>12323504>Quake is a series where story doesn't matter but they keep trying to force it into the series and it's even cringier than expected. Are you referring to Call of the Void? Leptis Magna is my favorite AD map in part because of the story it tells and how it tells it, and I don't recall CotV putting in anything remotely to the same degree. The "story" doesn't go much further beyond the premise.
>>12323546Fuck you I am not lazy
>>12323551Good map but I don't remember a single thing from the story because it isn't forced upon you. Case in point: the map Barnacle forces up dialogue for almost every action you do like key cards or activating a switch along with making the player wait around for SUPER EPIC GAYMUR scripted event. AD does this too but not to the extend CoV does.
>AAAAAAAAAA WE SHOULDN'T HAVE PLAYED A PIRATED COPY OF DOOM II
>>12323563>Good map but I don't remember a single thing from the story because it isn't forced upon you.I don't remember any of the CotV story "prompts" because I didn't care, still enjoyed the mod. A lot of Quakeulf's maps are notorious for some iffy/obnoxious popups and they're still amazing. They were incredibly subdued in Sonic Mayhem, however, and even decently well written at the end.
>>12323529That's a good idea, at least conceptually.>>12323532It's just a gameplay mod, anon. I'm thoroughly burned out on mapping even though I do want to do some UDMF experiments for GZ at some other point. That said, it could be fun to have a little fetch quest thing. Doubt I have it in me to code it, but an idea's an idea.>find battered soldier asking for a big medikit that spawned somewhere in a secret>bring it to him>he gives you the pistol upgradeIt must be a pain in the ass to make but I love this sort of thing.
>>12323574>fetchquest in doom>fetchquest in a fps in general
>>12323579If you really think about it, FPS games already have fetch quests. You need to fetch keys to unlock doors, after all.
>>12323583If you think about it, you're on a never ending fetch quest for my dick in your mouth.
>>12323579Anything that adds a bit of interactivity is good in my eyes.>props you can destroy for some items>corpses that spawn items around them>turning lights on and off>finding a random ally fighting monstersIt's why I like Rogue Decoreator and its Stalker-esque anomalies and rare entites.
>>12323579Keyhunting is a fetch quest
A fetch quest is fine if it is just exploring a new level. A good chunk of Afterglow is actually fetch quests but it's all new areas mostly so it's just giving you a narrative reason to go to x new area and fight y new monster and get z gear along the way + reward after.
>>12323281>well technically our 3D is betterThat's a lot of cope to say "Carmack-sama I kneel".
>>12323613Fetch quests are not fun interactives.
Oh, nice, UZDoom finally has devbuilds with the new netcode and other stuff.https://devbuilds.drdteam.org/uzdoom/
>>12323686I think they're neat because for years I've only played Doom and I'm yet to play Fallout 3 or New Vegas. Bite me.
>>12323247>Macfags didn't have any other choiceWhere do you think those wall textures in MAP31 came from?
What was name of that gzdoom mapset which was like Blood TC but also had Doom monsters mixed in with Blood monsters. Howerer no hybrids, so it's not Bloom.
>>12323615>>12323583One that's a lot more subtle and enjoyable than fetch quests in later games.
>>12322912>>> CLASSIC DOOM CHALLENGE <<< Record a UV-Max demo Slaughterfest 2012 map 03 Island of Mystery" by Ribbiks -cl9Reply to this post with a demo & your time.Wad download and current records:https://dsdarchive.com/wads/sf2012?level=Map+03Example demo in 8:15:https://files.catbox.moe/crhuzs.lmpWinner of the previous challenge by a wide margin: Anon maxes every Doom 2 map up to 20!: >>12312353Given the relative popularity of the last challenge, I think I'll try something along those lines again later. For now though, we're back to standard uvmax. In case you've been thinking "these challenge maps aren't actually that challenging", this one actually took me a while.
>>12323823I know this map and it is way beyond me on skill 4 sorry
>>12323823>slaughterslopshant
Ashes on apocalyptic is legit hard, mistakes quickly add up
>>12323838I'm regretting starting a new game of Apocalyptic on Hard Reset. There's so many fucking bandits now that I left the zombie intro level, and they're shredding me.
>>12323814Project Re-Blood?
>>12323856the farm map? Could've bough a silencer for your pistol and stealthed through it
>>12323870Stealth works in this game? Isn't everybody nearby alerted after the characters "wake up" everyone around them?
>>12323873I mean, this isn't Goldeneye. You can't cleanly headshot, right?
>>12323856I've just started afterglow after finishing 2063+dmw and some points were really kicking my ass, especially the last fight of DMW in the red room. I liked it though, made me actually feel like a survivor in constant danger.>>12323873Partially, if you can kill a bandit fast enough and out of sight, he won't trigger the rest.. Hell in DMW I triggered one mutant by LoS right next to another that was looking somewhere else and then meleed the first one to death without waking the second one.
>>12323885>>12323873forgot to mention, kill QUIETLY, so either RMB swing from the crowbar or a suppressed pistol/smg
>>12323281>>12323298Doom is real 3D though, System Shock 2's 3D was just poorly optimized.
>>12323873Guns have a radius at which they will alert enemies. If you can kill them with the crowbar or silenced pistol before they fire their gun they won't alert everyone.
>>12323885>especially the last fight of DMW in the red room.God, that room kicked my ass even on Survival. I dread imagining it on Apocalypse. I probably would have ragequit.
>>12323892I didn't realize the type of crowbar swing mattered. Good to know.
>>12323343> Korea war escalated into WW3 Hell yeah, feature irradiated communists and capitalists to mow down and I'll give it a try.
>>12323285I vaguely remember this.>>12323806You mean the Mac version of Wolf3D? Most of the high res graphics in that version were originally made for the Atari Jaguar port of the game, and the changed level sets are too. Also, while I like Wolf3D, that's still only Wolf3D.
>>12323906It's less type and more the fact that a heavy swing would OHKO a bandit, leaving him no time to trigger anyone.
>>12323894lmao
>>12323920It's pretty inarguable.
>>12323280more like gayloHAAH
>>12323924There's a reason there isn't true sector-over-sector areas. At least not until you mess around with either connecting zones or other source port fuckery. Also, infinitely tall monsters.
marathon is cringesystem shock is gay and cringedoom is cool
>>12323246>Why did it get so popularBecause Apple/Macintosh functioned like a land mass separated by an entire ocean. People raised on these systems are like complete foreigners with their own isolated cultures. If they had access to Doom back in the day, they probably wouldn't cling to Marathon.
>>12323934W-what about Dook?
>>12323938duke is cool and basedI'm just tired of these faggots trying to make every shitty 90s fps game (i.e. marathon or those star wars games) into some sort of a culturally relevant milestone
>>12323924HahahaLook, I want to help you. I get it, someone has posted something "wrong" and you have to correct him. I get it. I have the same impulse. But you are mistaken. You have misunderstood the situation. I'll try to explain.Someone posted this magazine article which is clearly written by a system shock fan for other system shock fans who are fed up of getting teased by their doom-playing friends, and saying look, don't despair, here is a counter-argument for you to make. I just thought this was very cute and commented on it.You seem to have taken it as an actual argument and are arguing against it. Because you're bad at social nuance. I get it. If I were you I would have probably made the same mistake. This is why I am laughing at you. It is affectionate. It's like, this guy is as much of a sperg as I am.I'm sorry. But do you understand now?
Caleb might be my favorite voiced retro shooter char. I like them all and Caleb's a bit of an edge lord but Stefan Weyte or whatever his name is puts a lot of charm into delivering his zingers. I still hear "here's to not lookin' at you, kid" when I'm playing other shooters. Also his laughter is extremely contagious.
>>12323910It's just the weapons, anon. If it were a TC it wouldn't be made by just myself and by then I'd have reservationd of participating directly.I'm gifted (or cursed) with the power of making shit up on the spot and somehow making it sound like I've spent years on it.
>>12323956His line reads are fucking flawless.
>>12323934>system shock is gay and cringesystem shock brutally mogged doom
I find a little funny how Commander Keen was referenced in a more jovial manner in Quake than in Doom, given how Quake is the more foreboding game of the two.
>>12323994Honestly, the hanged Keen was a little tasteless. Even Duke's parodies held back a little more than that. Mostly.
>>12323994Maybe by the time of Quake A.Carmack hadn't had to put up with T.Hall for a while so had mellowed out a bit.
>>12323994They were tired of Keen by the time of Doom. By the time of Quake the suffering they endured made Keen look like a better time
>>12323784>Hey you know this thing you could do? What if we made it so you had to talk to person BEFORE you went and did thing?!Just give me a spreadsheet with item requirements and I'll figure it out or just let me fuck around and I'll figure it out.
>>12323934>>12323939>System Shock2 is great. The 1 remake is fugly as sin and has annoying character/mechanics.Haven't played the original 1 though I am tempted to.
>>12324026>The 1 remake is fugly as sin and has annoying character/mechanics.It's also pretty fucking unfaithful, they took weapons out, they made enemies bullet sponges, they changed the writing when that was the one thing SS1 unquestionably got right.
>>12322912>"Aye...?"
>>12323736>new netcodenandato!
>>12322912
>>12324080Neat, are those models or just two-sided middle textures?Comic sans, heh. UAC is rebranding
>>12323994id had a mini civil war over the direction of the company>make more Keen games>make atmospheric first-person RPGs>make Doomit took a lot of internal arguing and Carmack firing people to settle the issue, but it eventually even claimed John Romero's career at id.
>>12323285I think it was a mix of "not unique enough" and also being hard to code, because Samsara already had messy code to begin withAnd the mod itself was structured in a way where each character was also a "class", which means that alone was secretly a priority than the actual "Smash of FPS" aspectI recall even the original ZDoom forum page giving the characters some class titlesMeanwhile, the prisoner from Unreal was originally planned but she never made it officiallyEven then, Samsara's roster has creative differences from their source material like the Hexen Cleric having weapons from the other Hexen guys or the Chex Quest dude no longer being a Doomguy reskin
>>12324136Took Tom Hall out first really, he was one of the ones who didn't agree with John Carmack on a bunch of thing, with his arguing leading to stuff like Cacodemons and teleporters being in Doom, but it also led to stuff like killing Keen in Doom 2 because some like Adrian started to really fucking despise him.
>>12323435Still working on this TC, despite it being too ambitious for one person and RL obligations taking almost all the available time. Aimed to have a steam page up before end of last year, but had to postpone. Anyway. No rest for the wicked.
>>12324154Tom Hall was responsible for copying the design of the Astral Dreadnought? Or am I misunderstanding you?
>>12324026System Shock 1 is better than 2, and much better than remake.
>>12324215Carmack didn't want to do flying enemies.
>>12324219No way. SS1 is cramped, mazelike, and lacking in area diversity to keep your brain engaged. SS2 is much more interesting to explore and fight in.
>>12324220Oh, yes, of course, I forgot that. Thank you.
>>12324198Looks pretty.
>>12322912how would doom guy react to every single monster? (from doom 1 to 2)

>>12323938>caleb reading manga>dook watching vtubersThat's weirdly fitting for their characters.>doomguy being angry all the timeThis isn't.
>>12324315I think Duke is actually playing Blue Archive.
>>12324315>dook watching vtubersThat's not vtuber, that's some gacha like BlueArchive.
>>12324315>>12324317What manga is Caleb reading?
>>12324316>>12324317That's less on character, but still fitting.
>>12324315Doom guy is doing gunpla. Look at his hands.
>>12324325The more you look at it, the weirder the picture gets
>>12324325That doesn't suit him at all.
>>12324343I think it does, it's quiet and methodical work, and we know Doomguy has a delicate enough touch to assemble that shit. He owns a Rabbit.
>>12324323Blue Archive mostly gets meme'd about for lolis (and it has a lot), but it also has some grown big titty bitches which Duke would probably quite appreciate.>>12324247>how would Duke Nukem react to every single Alien Bastard?Odd question tbhfam.
>>12324247Why don't you play the games and see for yourself?
>>12324350I haven't watched the anime but I don't think he'd be that into it. Seems like too much combat and Doomguy seems like he would enjoy some more peaceful hobbies.Building models fits him, but gundam doesn't.
>>12324353In that case he'd probably enjoy Nikke more.
>>12324360I knew some guys who built gunpla without ever watching the corresponding animes.

Duke actually is a huge action nerd. I really, really doubt that he'd be into those kind of anime moe games.

Don't judge me, but I was watchind civvie11 and it's the first time hearing about the Zoom platform at all (https://www.zoom-platform.com/search/any/any/first-person-shooter/any/any/any/any/any) that has games in their original version, DRM free, "adapted" to modern OS too. I do wonder how legal everything in their store is.Zoom Platform appears as a developer on Steam, along with their parent company "Jordan Freeman Group", which it's also the first time I've heard it.Anyways, browsing through this found a spin-off of Redneck Rampage that has little to do at all with the original games.Like, what the fuck.
>>12324605Also the entire reason the word "weeaboo" has the meaning it has today.
>>12324616Zoom Platform is a legit business, all legal. Good people in my experience too.
>>12324616It's been one that anons who wanted to buy the unfucked version of Duke3D have used for years now, never seemed like anything shady was going on.

>>12324661>Webm for LazysPlease don't tell me it's gone through yet another name change, it's bad enough it had to change from it's original name.
>>12324687It's been a long time since I've downloaded it, so I don't know if there's any other new.Previously I was using Webm for Bakas (or for gits, dunno) but I guess those names were too "insulting"
>>12324696Even before those it was straight up called Webm for Retards.
>>12324701I still use that one (from 2014?!). Have there been changes or updates since that make upgrading to a new version worthwhile?
>>12324649If you're familiar with mpv, I'd recommend trying this script. I get a good size quality ratio, and for simple operations it's actually even lazier than webmforlazys. If you don't use mpv however, the whole thing might be incomprehensible. https://github.com/ekisu/mpv-webm/>>12324696I seriously think calling someone a baka is about as serious as calling someone a sillyhead, I can't imagine being offended by it. Adding to that, its was actually refreshing to have software willing to outright insult me. Still waiting on Webm for Niggerfaggots.
>>12324701TrueI forgot that I used that one for some time too

>>12324872Took some melatonin and played PC Doom before going to bed
>>12323929The engine does have some limitations/shortcuts so it can run well on a 486, such as infinitely tall monsters and no stacked floors, but there are several 3D gameplay mechanics like webm related
>>12324872I too only only functioned on a cartridge-based system, but I grew out of it.
>>12324884But it does mean it's not as 3D as Quake. And I don't just mean sprites vs. models.
