RG DS isn't bad, but god does it need a grip. They didn't have to copy the shitty ergonomics 1:1
>>
>>12489335
These clamshells look classier square. It makes me feel like an 80s businessman with a PDA. A grip makes it obviously like a toy. If the Thor had flush shoulder buttons it'd be perfect.
>>
>>12489335
The ergonomics on the DS were fine. It's only with the 3DSXL when they started to become unusable without grips.
>>
>>12489341
3DS was very much unusable as well, I had it.
>>
Has anyone here swapped buttons with the various 3D-printed ones you can find online? Curious if I'll end up with rough prints that'll need to be smoothed up, or have lower tolerances than the OEM injection molded ones. Just looking for anecdotes.
>>
>>12489390
not sure if it counts, but I used 3d printed buttons on a grip - they were pretty rough. I assume resin buttons feel better

>Can I get an honest comparison between the Anbernic RG476H and RG477M devices? I'm interested in playing retro up to and including PS2 and GameCube. From what I understand, the 476H can handle it but is it worth paying like a $100 dollars more for the 477M?

You could check out Russ's videos on it. Short version, if you want to play GC and PS2, the 476H is not enough. I think the 477M is pretty awesome but as the other anon said the triggers are not ideal for a lot of those 6 gen games. Maybe when they make the 478M or whatever the next version is, we'll get stacked analog triggers.
>>
>>12489491
I have a DSi and it's perfectly fine. The design doesn't work when scaled up.

I successfully removed the sticks on my 35xxh. It's actually quite difficult, since just unplugging them creates constant false inputs. You have to break apart the assembly and pull out the thumb stick.

I was always curious, wouldn't cutting the ribbon and leaving it plugged in but removing the sticks work?

Can someone explain to a newfag what the reasons for the split between linux and android handhelds is? Like the Anberic RG35 and variants are all Linux, on an ARM chip. But then most of the more powerful devices are android. Is it that most of the more powerful chipsets they can get are android only?

I'm new to this sorry if it sounds dumb. Is it possible to emulate old PC games(like 90s, very early 2000s) on a handheld that isn't an actual PC(Steamdeck...). Like could a "higher end" device like the Odin 2 Portal or the Retroid Pocket 6 do something like that?
>>
>>12489657
Yeah but it's janky. Android has emulators for Windows games. These handhelds have enough performance for indieshit and retro PC games but compatibility is whatever. Handheld PCs are still the best option if you wanna play PC games.

Slapping Android on a high end CPU takes less effort than building a custom linux GUI. They just take the android BSP by the CPU manufacturer and slightly customize it. Also most people prefer Android to a locked down proprietary GUI.
On the low end chips, only barebone linux runs well, so manufacturers have to use it. And android doesn't work well without a touchscreen, which most budget devices dont have.
Technically there's nothing stopping you from running Linux on high end chips. Look at the devices supported by Rocknix.

Because most of the ARM CPU vendors that are used by handheld devices exclusively make binary blobs/drivers/firmware for Android. Linux and Android handle firmware very differently and so does ARM compared to x86. You literally cannot install a regular Linux OS on most of the ARM CPUs out there. The only thing a handheld manufacturer could do is ask (pay) the CPU vendor to make Linux drivers, or reverse engineer the driver and/or port over the Android blobs. But that would hike the price by 100%-300% and at that point it's not worth it.

There are some CPUs which support both. But there aren't many because of how non-standardized ARM is (it's an architecture for literal appliances with a specific OS or "OS build" made for each device). You'll have to wait for ARM to become somewhat standardized on Windows/Linux desktops and laptops for this to change. Only then will you have "this handheld can run either Linux or Android or even Windows if you're sadistic".

https://retrohandhelds.gg/your-odin-3-might-not-actually-use-the-snapdragon-8-elite-but-theres-more-to-the-story/

Turns out Odin 3 isnt using a snapdragon elite and Qualcomm asked them to change it for all their ads. They're actually using a tuned version of the snapdragon 8 elite called Dragonwing, which removes things like camera processing to run cooler and faster.

>If this seems like something that’s out of the blue, the reality is that it’s not. Everyone remembers the beloved AYN Odin 2 and its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC? The thing is, that’s not actually the specific chip found in the Odin 2.

>Instead, it’s the Qualcomm Dragonwing QCS8550, another “Internet of Things (IoT)” chip that features many of the same specs as the 8 Gen 2. Like the 8 Gen 2 and the QCS8550, the 8 Elite and CQ8725S are practically identical, with the biggest difference being the removal of the “Cellular Modem-RF System”.

The goal is to achieve this. You break the metal back of the stick assembly and remove the tan plastic piece which sockets the thumbstick in place, allowing you to pull it out. It's destructive and not at all simple. Anbernic clearly didn't expect people to remove the sticks.

I've been 6 months away from keyboard and Retroid/Ayn etc al STILL haven't stolen my design yet? Does Clamcell not live in the hearts of all anons? Do I issue an ultimatum by email? Or an open letter since clearly they are stagnating in terms of design since the RP6. I'm hoping the Flip3 will be better but I hold little hope for that. It will still only feature 1 card slot and 1 USB port. I have compromised, And will ask little else of them.
>>
>>12489657
Depends, not a great time. For example, I got Sonic Adventure DX 2003 (converted steam version using sadx-mod-installer) to run fine as-is on RP5 after getting newer turnip drivers to fix artifacts on older versions, but once I tried mods neither of the mod loaders run and some mods just murder performance (like audio introducing stutters every line) for no apparent reason.

THPS2 wasn't booting until dgVoodoo 2, then Cumulative Patch works fine with the DLL hooking up. The mod launcher won't run here either, but in this case it's completely optional.

Also, broadly speaking you're locked to 720p max for performance. Only very lightweight stuff will run fine at 1080p.

Most ARM companies only make Android drivers and make them closed source and don't provide any documentation. Mali drivers on Linux are reverse engineered by unpaid volunteers instead of being made by the SoC vendors. So, Linux will be years behind in performance with any SoC using Mali (Samsung, MediaTek, HiSilicon, UNISOC, Rockchip, AllwinnerTech, Amlogic, etc.). Android will always run better on these unless a company does end up making a Linux-specific driver or contributes to the reverse engineered driver (Panfrost).

>>12491026
>I wonder if Anberic will ever invest in a Linux OS for a more powerful chip.
From what I've seen Anbernic loves to use Mali GPUs for their handhelds. And Mali drivers on Linux are unofficial and blindly reverse-engineered. If you want a viable Linux OS then you need an Adreno (Qualcomm) device.
What's funny is that going Qualcomm would benefit both Linux and Android because of the better and more open drivers. If you compare 2 Android devices, one using Dimensity 8300 (which uses Mali) and one using a modern Snapdragon SoC, you'll notice that the Dimensity 8300 performs 1.5x-2.5x better in benchmarks. BUT, it performs worse when actually running emulators for modern consoles (ie Switch) and has worse compatibility. This is why the mid-range and high-end Anbernic devices are just not worth the money. The raw performance on them is supposed to be really good, but the drivers just suck even on Android. That's why most people recommend against Anbernic devices that are over $100.

I think there's more to it than just hand size. I wear L/XL gloved (I prefer them tight), and the size of the SP doesn't bother me at all. I do have an RG35XX, though, and don't think I could go any smaller than that without having issues. On the opposite extreme, clamshells like the 3DS XL feel like shit to hold for any length of time. I think that there's a relationship between weight and balance that matters more than ergonomics up until you hit a certain threshold; the bigger and heavier the device, the more important it is that it fits your hands well.

Is there any custom firmware which isn't made by clowns who know nothing about programming? Onion OS and Crossmix OS are the worst. Made by idiots who reskinned the broken proprietary launcher and called it an "OS".

Why does this place have to be filled with Ayn employees peddling their shit?
>>

Stock RG34XX has some gnarly false diagonals, easily fixable with some tape. Otherwise it's a god damn perfect device.

smallgames.ch has a really extensive collection including niche indieshit and japanese only roms but dogshit file hosts (1fichier unless you pay and they limit downloads like crazy) or just check fmhy

>Android decides to block installing things from third-party developers
You're falling for FUD.
1. Most of these handhelds don't even have GMS or Play Protect. I believe those are the two components which will provide apk validation. At least that was the original plan, I'm not sure if anything changed since.
2. Most of these handhelds are running outdated versions of Android. It'll be years before handhelds start releasing with Android 17.
3. The OEM can disable this behavior. It's extremely unlikely that these handheld companies will enable this considering they don't really care about Google Verification which requires OEMs to play ball with Google's rules. You only need a Google Verified device/ROM if you plan on doing contactless payments in bank apps. I really doubt someone will want to whip out their Anbernic RG Slide in a store to perform a payment.
4. APKs which include signatures signed by verified devs are exempt from the anti-sideloading setting. Basically, when an APK file is built it comes with a signature which verifies that the APK is coming from a specific source/developer. Considering most emulators are on Play Store this also means most emulator devs will probably want to get their signatures verified by Google (those who offer paid versions of emulators are already identifying themselves to Google, so they will certainly be verified). This all means you'll be able to sideload pretty much anything coming from the Play Store anyway. The only thing that would be affected are pirated/cracked APK files which, when rebuilt, get their built-in signature invalidated.
5. Even assuming the worst case scenario (if apk verification cannot be disabled by the OEM and none of the emulator developers get verified) you can still sideload APKs. You can enable sideloading in "Settings -> Developer Settings". The only inconvenience is that you have to wait 24 hours for sideloading to get enabled on your device.

Ayn thor is...

newfriend here
what's the deal with Russ
I looked at his channel for a bit and it almost seems like he just follows the ad revenue schedule for posting videos, almost like the modern vintage retard who makes a 10+ minute video about a single post he found on twitter

>Thor
Gotta agree, been having a good time with it recently and it fits in my pocket unlike the Steam Deck. took fucking forever for them to ship it though.
Also been using it as a youtube player on the side when I'm doing other shit.

He's what you see is what you get unlike Techdweeb, who really wants you to get hyped over the dumbest shit
>>
>>12492908
he's very thorough and honest but the handheld industry is having a hard time right now so he's scrambling to keep the content going
>>
>>12492917
Thor is still slightly big for my liking (I upgraded from a Flip 2) but I think they did the best they could with the feature set.
>>
>>12492952
I think it evens out because the Flip 2 gets thicker than the Thor at the back thanks to that slanted design while the Thor is flat.
