Ngl, I’m glad I stopped using this.It was killing my retro gaming experience and I think my current experience with the Switch 2 and it’s lack of achievements made me realize how much of a pointless chore it all is.
I like the idea of RetroAchievements, but don't want to have my crap tracked online. Give me a fully offline version, just for my own satisfaction and not for anyone to look at, then I'll be a happy camper.
>>12535693As a non zoomer Xbox live/snoy trophies kid I will never understand retards that love achievements because I didn't grow up with it
>>12535693I also think it’s because of Nintendo’s game philosophy and why they refuse to use cheevos in their modern consoles. The game IS the reward, you’re playing it and that’s all that matters.
>>12535693Same experience here. I was all in when I first discovered it and I 100%d a bunch of games, but I realized it was making replays actually less fun, not more fun which was the whole point. I disabled it in retroarch and haven't used it again. For me the biggest problem is that there are too many absolutely absurd challenges that only 0.0001% of people playing will ever get fairly. Plus there's obviously a lot of cheating which makes those bragging rights pointless anyway. If the achievements were all sensible I would go back, but that will never happen because it would mean deleting about half of all achievements on the site. The entire thing is built around adding stress to games you should actually just play normally and enjoy. What a waste of potential though.
>>12535701In other words they understand that games are supposed to be fun. Crazy that that's become a revolutionary concept in vidya these days.
>>12535696I don't mind if the games themselves offer some sort of recognition or unlockables, though. That can be done well.I think the disconnect between older and modern gamers is that trophies tend to fall into a few categories: checkpoint types that you get for playing the game naturally, thus not really being notable accomplishments. Ones you receive for clearing/beating a game. Ones that encourage you to do tedious grinding for no other reason than the trophy itself, or play in an unnatural way. Online trophies that are often the former. And then silly ones for discovering Easter eggs or goofy shit. So mostly useless messages of validation, for the most part. We didn't need any of that in the past to motivate us to play games. Playing with achievements on is like having a background process in your brain. It affects how you perceive and interact with the game. You're not just clearing a level. Now you're trying to beat the level with half an A-press and 69 coins in under 30 seconds. You've turned your game into a homework assignment. I find it funny that people would want to shove an ailment of modern gaming into older games, which are supposed to offer an escape from such bullshit.
>>12535716Achievements *shouldn't* be 'sensible'. They should have tons of absurd shit put there for the luls that almost nobody will be able to pull off, and precisely to demonstrate that this stuff exists for the sake of it and shouldn't be something anyone aims to 100%.
>>12535693Have they restored the banned games yet?
>>12535693>starts the post with ngl>switch 2>even thinking about using RA in the first placefaggot!
>>12535737That's ignoring the fact that only autistic people know about and how to use RetroAchievements. Don't project your sanity onto autists. 100% is mandatory or the entire experience is ruined for them.
>>12535738fuck no
>>12535716Sounds like a (You) problem, thinking every set needs to be hundoed.i have like 98% on the burnout games because I refuse to grind for those special takedowns.
>>12535738what games did they ban?
>>12535771Pokémon Clover
>>12535774this looks like a rom hack are they all banned or just this one?
>>12535797ROM hacks in general are allowed, while Pokémon Clover was banned after an outcry from a part of the userbase and a whole lot of people who would never touch RetroAchivements anyway.
>>12535798no, I get it now having googled it a little further. didn't know it was full of 4Chan humor. I can see why they don't want to be associated with it, as our particular sense of humor doesn't really jive with most other people.
i kind of like it, some of those achievements seem absolutely rediculous though
>>12535693A lot of the sets have been broken for literally years and coming up on a full decade for some of them at this point. Imagine playing a game for 2 hours for a specific achievement, you do the thing and it doesn't unlock. And if you complain about it they say you're bullying the set maker. Fuck all that.
>i beat the gameWhat, do you want a fucking medal?>yes i am pretty princesslmao>and i want public recognition for ityou will never be a woman
>>12535846They only banned it because of the giant shitstorm it caused. Pokemon Periwinkle is another 4chan hack. That one's content is very tame by 4chan standards yet it got taken down for being associated with Clover, despite already having a set.
>>12535889at some point you have to accept that the vast majority of the rest of the Internet doesn't want to be associated with this place, even peripherally. I don't like it, but I get it.
>>12535924>vast majority of the rest of the InternetIt was literally like three people and they weren't even active users of the site.
>>12535924I'm sure that the no lifes who became moderators on a site aimed at technically inclined autistic boomers represent the internet.
>>12535771Pokemon Clover (4chan made ROM hack, one of the most requested games on the site for years btw), Custer's Revenge (had a set for years), plus one or two more games who also had sets for a long time which I don't remember. All because the owner of TCRF (same dude behind the Romhacking.net drama a while ago) wrote on BlueSky that having Pokemon Clover on the site was endorsing hate speech, and his goons started creating accounts to post on the forums and ask for the game to be banned. The site's admins and mods didn't want to ban any games, and publicly announced their intention on the front page. The very next day, the owner of the site overruled their consensus and banned the games. Huge drama ensued, users who asked for Clover and the other games to be reinstated on the forums got banned, some on the admin and mod team quit, as well as achievement set devs, oh and one admin leaked the admin discord convos because he got threatened by another admin for pushing against the ban wave... the threat in question was made using a photo of his newborn kid, by the way. Fun stuff!
>>12535945let me guesstroons?
>>12535982Literally. Stuff like this is why everyone hates them now.
>>12535865What’s even if worse is that if you’re out of the house and struggling with shittty internet at a mall, store or whatever, you’ll get screwed out of your cheevo you’ve worked your ass over because of a network error.Fuck all that, I can’t believe I’ve been playing older games so miserably like this.
>>12535982Yes, unironically
>>12535693I just disable Hardcore Mode and I don't check the cheevos before playing. That way I don't worry about them, but I still have something to do once I finish the game and want more.
