I was ten when pokemania started in the US

I didn't grow out of it, I was disappointed from the start. I wanted a cool game with these interesting monsters, but we were constantly shoveled shit
>r/b
story was lacking, had a few alright moments, but I wanted more that what was offered
>snap
was shit, came here for a monster adventure not to take pictures. It would have been fine if it was a stadium mini game not a 60 dollar game

>stadium
good post game battles, but not much else
>g/s
Much better than the original but I just wanted more than what was presented.
I remember playing paper mario, and wondering why I couldn't get a story like this in pokemon, reading both pokemon manga wishing the games could be like this

Between the gap between gen2 and gen 3 I got a PS2 for xmas and I played many rpgs
>almost all square rpgs
even went back and played the SNES ones
>all of dragon quest up until then
>lunar 1+2
>chrono trigger/cross
>played monster rpgs like jadecoon
>played arc the lad realized it was made the same year as (r/g) in japan
here is the monster arena side game where you can pit party members and monsters you captured against other players. 20x better than any Pokémon game to date
The things I wanted to happen in Pokémon games happened in this game.
>crazy missions like destroying a cultist outpost
>destroying a monster creation factory
> badass teammate moments
>School yard rumors made about pokemon actually happened in this game
Traversing to the bottom of a fifty floor dungeon to fight a super boss, acquire them as a party member, and then said party member having a crazy sidequest where they reveal their true pass, traverse even farther into the fifty floor dungeon and have a mega-evolution more than eighteen years

That made me quit pokemon altogether, I tried to get into it by playing mystery dungeon ranger .
Honestly Mystery Dungeon is what I was pokemon was from the fucking start world and story wise.

What made you quit?

I haven't stopped

Arc the Lad is a monster collector game? Why didn't anyone tell me
>>
Never got into 3rd gen but was huge into everything pokemon related before. Think it was because I got more into Digimon at that point and other games. I remember being at the store and I could pick a game out to get and I had Ruby in one had and Super Monkey Ball in the other. I went with my nigga AiAi.

Well, in Arc the Lad 2 the party meets a monster tamer, and there a seprate disc called arc arena that allows for monster battles. You can only have 12 though due to memory card restrictions; however if you win enough monster battles you can enter your party members in for easy leveling.

Take a gander.

>into Digimon at that point and other games
I still like the designs and watch the anime, but world two was a pile of shit, it actually turned me off to dungeon crawlers for a really long time,.

> I went with my nigga AiAi.
good choice

all I know about AtL is Kukuru paizuri

I started middle school

>What made you quit?
Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet being awful gay games, and the anime stated focusing on gay fursonas instead of Ash catching pokemon and fighting evil.

that sort of thinking leads to having kids out of wedlock and living in nowheresville.

Also I am surprised no one has mentioned the glaring flaws.
>IV/EV bullshit
It took them this long in champions to get the bullshit sorted out.
>Static sprites
Everything else had really well animated sprites, but pokemon has shitty static spritework, mystery dungeon mogged the main series
>Reusing N64 models up until the wii
If anyone else did that people would be calling for heads on pikes.

Gens 1-3 were my childhood games.
Gens 4 and 5 were good too.
The 3DS games were disappointing and Ultra Sun was the one that made me quit. I still haven't finished it or played a newer one since.
It stopped feeling like an RPG and more like an anime for young children.

Around the 4th gen when I realized they weren't interested in realizing the dream. I always figured that as the tech got better we'd see them try and make more intricate worlds and really make you feel like you were there with the same immersion you had as a kid play R/B and G/S, but nope. As it went on they only became more stagnant and lazy, usually taking one step forward and two steps back. Sun and Moon were serviceable, but still never quite felt like what I wanted as a kid.

Thankfully, Palworld 1.0 drops, I play it on a whim, and it ends up being pretty darn close to how I imagined Pokemon would be when I got older. Obviously not the guns and lack of towns, but the way the pals walk around the world interacting with eachother and the way you interact with them is pretty darn close.

Also, fun sad tidbit, apparently they brought back the OG director who wanted to achieve the dream with the D/P remakes, but GF stepped in with the budget and a want for the chibi art style.
