It's time to adress the elephant in the room, there has been a rise in retro games being translated this year, more than any year before.
What happened? Have you or are you currently playing any of the recenly translated games this year? What untranslated retro game are you hoping to be translated next?

I enjoy the language, so it's cool to actually notice things like puns, dialects and other literary nuances that get completely lost in translations, especially AI ones.
But yeah it wasn't hard for me as I have not problem learning new languages anyway.

Anyways, none of the games that have been translated are ones I've been waiting for so I haven't tried any of them.
Also, say what you want about translation groups, but I like it when their work feels like a passion project and not shoveling text a machine regurgitates into a patch and calling it a day; I have more respect for the people who did the unfinished Front Mission 2 translation than for a guy pumping out ten mtl scripts a year just because he has tokens to spend.

I had time to acclimate to the fact that MTLs being the majority in fan translations is the way forward but that's OK. Maybe I can then start on my backlog of retro shit. As >>12815715 said, there are people that actually know how to use AI and are competent enough to review the translation.

Indeed, my fellow guy.
There has been a rise of artificial language model assisted translations! The thing to remember is this: will we let all those bad people to continue doing what they do and produce terrible, artificially powered language modeled translations or will we shun those new projects on principle? What is being "made" with language models has no soul. Whoever uses language models has no soul.

That's one problem with AIslop. There's so much of it and it floods the "market" to the point that there's less incentive to produce something good and original. Why put the effort into making a proper translation (or anything like that) if some half-assed AI thing is already out there to suck most of the hype out of a proper translation's release, especially when the sentiment is "good enough is good enough?" Most of the people who were eager to play the game in English will tolerate the AIslop, finish the game, then never think about it again, and probably won't care when a proper translation comes out.
Of course people will still make proper translations because they care about the game and making a quality product, but let's be honest, getting recognition and attention is, and will always be, a driving factor for people to post things on the internet.
>>
>>12817939
>Why put the effort into making a proper translation (or anything like that) if some half-assed AI thing is already out there to suck most of the hype out of a proper translation's release
So a better translation can exist? People make things people won't care about all the time just because they want it to exist. Including retranslating games that absolutely don't need retranslations. As you said
>Of course people will still make proper translations because they care about the game and making a quality product
>Most of the people who were eager to play the game in English will tolerate the AIslop, finish the game, then never think about it again, and probably won't care when a proper translation comes out.
A shame, but there's always new people who can play the game. And they'll go towards the best available translation.
>getting recognition and attention is, and will always be, a driving factor for people to post things on the internet.
True. But I don't think we've seen any sign of quality translations slowing down in reality. We're getting the same number of them, even if they're surrounded by lesser translations. And it's nice seeing games people wouldn't touch getting released in some fashion.

The controversial part: AI translations/MTL are getting better, and the results aren't always as terrible as people think. With a small amount of editing, or maybe none eventually, they will be just about as good to most people as a natural translation. Especially for the simple text in many games which were aimed towards children and teenagers. You might miss small nuances or a tiny amount of flavor, which is sad. But the reality is very few people will care all that much, and those things can be reintroduced with intelligent proofreading.

The quality differences are already becoming overstated, with the issues being more from people rushing out AI stuff without polishing first.

In theory yes, but if you have a misinformed youtuber platform the wrong hack, congratulations: the situation is completely beyond fixing as the slopper spams themselves to chase the high they felt when youtuber platformed their "work" knowing deep down they will never capture that feeling ever again with an honest product.
>even if they're surrounded by lesser translations.
We need a new system that flushes out incomplete junk and rushjobs. RHDN's reviews system theoretically helps but in reality it hinders because the reviewing users are often completely unqualified to talk about translations and then go on "it sounded natural" vibes.
>... the issues being more from people rushing out AI stuff without polishing first.
Which is a really massive problem because they don't know how to proofread what the bot says so even the polish could be a gold turd.

The fact that anyone can prompt and publish an MTL has brought the quality down to levels not seen since the very early days of fan translation with babelfish BS. As long as garbage like Sakura Wars 4 and Slime MoriMori' MTL keep rearing their head in public I'll keep calling MTLs what they are: sub standard work.
>>
>>12819692
>I'll keep calling MTLs what they are: sub standard work.
Many of them are, the problem is when you pretend that the quality is equal across the board. And even if the best MTL isn't perfect, the barriers to replacing the text are gone.

I just can't be too bothered by mountains of garbage existing either, when sifting through the garbage is almost always trivial to do.

That unequivocally one of the best uses AI has at this point and no one should be mad at a translation team used it to decrypt esoteric text compression algorithms from the 90s-00s if it means a more swift translation work. The problem is clout chasing flags and ESLs without a regard for quality also using LLMs which honestly are still years away from producing decent work as a first and ONLY draft and shitting it out into the wild, cluttering repos and hacking sites and let to fester forever
>>12819709

>>12819773

both AI and human-made translations will have mistakes, misunderstandings, loss of nuance, or at worst really cringe attempts to localize references and humor. there's really no amount of effort that can change this.

the bigger issue with AI translation is that there's no ability for the AI itself to fix what is wrong. a human translator can and probably will receive feedback, continue studying and learning, look back on previous translations and feel regret at their previous sloppy work. AI will never do that without a human to prompt it to do so first.

and humans who rely on AI translation tools will never do that, because they'll never understand what is wrong with the translation at all. the AI said it's correct, the players who don't know Japanese will never point out mistakes they can't understand, the "creator" won't ever know because if they knew enough Japanese to recognize the mistakes they wouldn't need to use AI for the translation.
>>
>>12819730
>I don't mind curse words. "Arche fuck like a tiger" is gold
This line alone is the reason AI translations are superior
>>
>>12819954
You contradicted yourself
>a human translator can and probably will receive feedback
>the players who don't know Japanese will never point out mistakes they can't understand
So when the translation is done by humans, players will come out to correct their mistakes, but when it's done by machines, everyone's magically incapable of giving feedback? lol
>>
>>12819980
sorry. note the "can and probably will", not "will".
it's not feedback from average players that matters, they're only ever going to know obvious issues in the target language, not the translation from source material. people who are familiar with said source have the feedback that matters, and that comes from a far far smaller pool of people. which, if AI really does discourage people from bothering to learn like >>12815558
implies, is only getting smaller.
still that one "contradiction" doesn't invalidate the rest of the post on it's own.
>>
>>12819692
>>12819672
>99% of the time MTLs get dumped without any updates from whoever "made" it.
YES, true. Sometimes you get in-perpetuity hacks that just keep updating forever because the author is an impulsive wishywashy git who can't make up their mind and needs to be at the center of it all (looking at you TWUE) but MTLers have the opposite problem where it's literally "oh good enough, who's gonna notice or care that it's not actually complete" and then their BPD authors just never actually finish it because that would actually require some language/hacking skills. Then when an alternative shows up that DOES notice and care, they tend to vamoose. These cretins are not interested in real self-improvement, all they're interested in is being first at something so they can parasocially watch some zoomer streamer clumsily play through their crap hack and pretend with starry eyes that it's their indie game they'll never make. All this ultimately does is confuse people and obstruct sense.
>>12819820
>If only there was a review site or something other than yes-men glazing every MTL under every comment section.
I think one way to fix that would be to limit reviews to other verified submitters. If you didn't make your own thing, you don't get a say.vWho cares if it's seen as elitist. Bring gatekeeping back. Or just make looser rules on negative reviews.

What's next on the enemy list?

Japanese Americans?

Japanese people who can speak English and tell this translation is bad?

The woke Writers Guilds of America of reddit?

Russian spies sent by Kaspersky labs?
Because someone thinks your ai patch / recomp exe is dubious as fuck and refuses to download it?

The broccoli cartel?
Because it's good for brain cells and eyesight and bad for ai slop business?

>Trannylators
AI sloppers translate too, was there some corrective CBT therapy by OpenAI that made them no longer trannies? Why are they considered special snowflakes among the rest when they lie and gaslight just as much as an enraged unrepentant bad localizer caught doing shitty work?
>>
>>12820415
>I understand completely your argument
clearly not, moron.

>there's no ability for the AI itself to fix what is wrong
this is straightforward. the AI will never decide, on a whim, by itself, to fix any mistakes that it made. a human has to tell it to. there's no """"""SOUL"""""" or HUMAN MAJESTY involved, it is literally how AI prompting works.

and like i said, the mistakes that matter here are not simple mistakes that the target language speakers can obviously point out, it's the mistranslations from source to target. the only people who are going to recognize those are people who have played BOTH the original script and the translation, which is a very small amount of people.

this is less of an issue for popular games, there's enough people who have learned by playing Final Fantasy 5 or Sakura Wars. less so for some random Yatterman game, or god forbid some random Taiwanese or Hungarian DOS shit.

AI makes translation mistake > no one notices because none who play actually understand source language or material > problem can't be fixed unless someone with actual knowledge points it out. ( > ask ourselves why the AI was necessary at all if it's going to require a translator in the end.) again, the human OP might review their previous work after learning more and decide to revise. the AI will never do this on it's own.

hopefully this is simple enough to follow now. if you're still struggling, maybe throw it into chatgpt and ask it to explain.
>>
>>12819954
>if they knew enough Japanese to recognize the mistakes they wouldn't need to use AI for the translation.
That’s where you’re wrong. Commonly used translation software has supported machine translation for far longer than current LLMs. Any translation is far faster when you have a base to start from. Using machine translation does not mean the translator lacks enough knowledge of the source language to correct mistakes or rewrite the text entirely. It’s simply a much faster workflow.
That said, 99% of the people translating these games with LLMs know zero Japanese, so your point stands.
Nowadays, anyone who claims they used no machine assistance at all is almost certainly lying. As it has always been, the quality of a translation depends on the translator’s proficiency in both the source and target languages and on their knowledge of the source material’s lore. LLMs have not changed that, and they will not.
>>

>>
>>12821523
> it's the mistranslations from source to target. the only people who are going to recognize those are people who have played BOTH the original script and the translation, which is a very small amount of people.
That's always been the case, retard. Your arguments against AI make no sense. Humans miss shit all the time. Look at the Yunyun Syndrome controversy if you don't believe me. They missed almost every single reference and that was done entirely by real people.
>AI makes translation mistake > no one notices because none who play actually understand source language or material
How does an AI translation make it so no one can point out issues with it? Or are you saying the ONLY person capable of evaluating the quality of a translation is the translator themselves after they miraculously decide to revisit their work?
I'm sorry, that might be the most retarded argument I've ever heard.
>>
>>12822006
"Localization" is best interpreted as "making concessions". The thing that makes it a convenient word for hacks is that there's no limit to how badly you can fuck up; you could be inventing complete bullshit and you're still "localizing", but you're not "translating".
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what you call it. The bottom line is that certain concessions need to exist no matter what. You categorically cannot translate something without localizing it to some degree.
>>
>>12822580
Localization is actually the practice of transforming a product from one culture to another. Vertical text to horizontal, ramen to burgers, Japanese names to Western ones, etc. For some reason the word is now synonymous with sense-for-sense translations. Dunno how that happened.
>>
>>12822627

>For some reason the word is now synonymous with sense-for-sense translations

I honestly lack the technical jargon to even begin with this topic, but if you speak multiple languages yourself then you should intuitively know that that's not true at all.

>Localization is actually the practice of transforming a product from one culture to another. Vertical text to horizontal, ramen to burgers, Japanese names to Western ones, etc.
ACTUALLY, the company I worked for had a different word for what you're describing: Adaptation. Sometimes it was translator suggestions, sometimes it was marketing notes. "Localization" wasn't even in corporate handbooks years ago, which is why there tends to be confusion/embarrassment when online amateurs confidently define it to industry professionals. I hear from acquaintances that the usage (if there is one) varies by company; in short, it's a buzzword.
I'd really love there to be a wider breakdown of this one day, but I imagine doing it anytime soon would be a violation of policies with people currently under employ (see: Nintendo guy who gave his take which certainly wasn't my company's).

It is absolutely true and fulfills the skopos of fidelity in a translation.

Language localization has been a thing since the 80s. I'm impressed how confidently you can lie on the topic when it's a pretty well-known term, broad as it may be.

Consider the following.
AI slop authors treat reading, let alone writing or translating, as a waste of time.

That there is the "motive".
The "result" is that they're ideologically opposed to proper translation.
The "output" is an english text that doesn't actually contain the full data from japanese text. Which is what players expect when they hear "translation" but it's not what they get when playing this translation.

It's not a matter of debate that the "data" is complete or even falsified.
According to the AI slop authors themselves, their "translation" is "good" because it looks like a coherent English sentence, it looks like a complete sentence, and the AI said it's grammatically correct. That is what they consider "error-free".

Thing is, anything by Nintendo Treehouse is just as coherent and grammatically correct, but is still not a good "translation".

Why? Because Treehouse does not "want" to convey the japanese data, then does not "do" that (NOT a translation, but a rewrite, or simply deleting parts of the text), and pretends that is a "good english version" based on criteria they set.

Discussing why Treehouse and other localizers do that is all about the "motive": they despise jp language/culture/etc, they hate the writing, they want to sell to preschoolers or soccer moms or the modern woke audience, they didn't learn jp or do research...

But that same result is seen in AI slop.
Script too long for the vibecoded patch? Just delete half of it and rewrite the rest to hide its existence.
Unknown sentence? Just guess, and reword the rest around the lie.
Details? Character spellings? Fuck those.
Problematic sentence? Gemini and OpenAI hate that, reword it.

Those same motives are heard from AI sloppers, with extra lies and shifting responsibility to the black box.

No wonder official localizers embraced AI to combine their shit rewrites with even less damn given to the "translation" part.

AI slop is selling the same old brand of localization.
>>
>>12822901
Anon was confidently describing "localization" as non-language regional differences apart from translation, which is a new development that not everyone agrees on. See, stuff like this is why translation discourse is screwed.

NTA not if you're one of those bugman cretins who call their text hack a "relocalization" as a sad excuse for their own lack of language skill.

Sigh. You know what actually happened here if you can read between the lines, right? This is most probably a spastic kid who kept getting their grievances-disguised-as-rewrites vetoed by higher-ups, then at the last minute slipped it under the door anyway when the real adult was not looking. Of course it's some online addict.

The bottom line here is that even if human translators end up bad, which many do, they start from the correct place: "I shouldn't just use AI."

AI guys fail right out of the gate. So even assuming 90% of human translators are bad, they have the potential to be good. AI guys are doomed from the start. They're too lazy to learn a language, too lazy to use a dictionary, too lazy to learn to code, too socially inept to work with other people on a team. Why would you think this type of person could produce a work worth talking about?

I don't see why peopel complain about AI translation. Is it because it's not literally god-like perfect right out of the gate, like any new technology has been in human history?
I'd rather have good translation tools in a few years than see people trusting trannies with faithful translations since people around here who claim to know Japanese sure don't worry about the very obvious cultural influence that evil localizers are pushing on the Japs, which will inevitably have consequences.
>>
>>12823105
>the ONLY person capable of evaluating the quality of a translation is the translator themselves

Normally you would listen to the opinions of people who can translate, not necessarily the og translator, because they can read both languages fluently (assuming they're qualified) and are hopefully (not always) honest enough to propose realistic solutions.
For example if Zelda 3 references some american DJ in japanese it should be left in english no matter how weird but some non-translator would say it's cringe and must have been a translation mistake.

If that's too hard you would listen to casuals who can read Japanese.
Their opinions on the ideal english wording won't always be great but they're passable and acceptable, but their opinions on the original japanese meaning would be very valuable, especially when it comes to saying "hey this english translation makes a complete mess of the japanese meaning".

That's IT.

Evaluating the quality of the english prose or the grammatical errors or the quality of the story isn't the same as evaluating the translation process.

BUT bad localizers will insist that's the part that matters the most, and proper translation is the part that matters the least.

That's also what LLM tl and proofreading focuses on. And naturally that's why AI slop authors are so hyperfixated on attacking people who can read japanese in general, not just all fan translators and all translators / localizers in existence.
>>
>>12824153
>>12824162
the fuck are you talking about?
you see a trans flag and instantly start sperging out
>>
>>12824162

The "evil localizers" are already involved in training ai, they implemented their taboo lists long ago and it's applied in most new ai patches.

The people who know japanese play the japanese version, then the english ai version, then come to the conclusion it's not a translation but a travesty with cleaned up grammar and rewritten loose ends to hide lies. They say "bad translation!" like they said to all bad translations before.

You want to be given special treatment and silence that truth. For that end you say "we're fighting on the same side" and talk about trannies and culturally colonised japan and promises things will get better in two weeks... the japanese reader looks at your behavior. The ai translations have the same localization practices they hate, the same contempt for details and accuracy, you brag about not reading japanese and have zero will to get better.

The normies who don't know japanese even notice these flaws, say this tl feels like shit but the answer is "you're an enemy of AI" and constantly denying this is a flaw. The normie sees you have zero intentions to improve the translation.

You're too worried about whether the politics talk will win people to your side, or about your technology, or whether players see there's better alternatives or ANY alternatives at all to your slop you can't even pretend to like, to see that you, yourself, are an untrustworthy breed of shit localizer who struggles to convince players why they shouldn't instead

> learn japanese
> play game untranslated
> play other translation (official or fan)
> use ocr with machine tl instead of your shit solution

And no, the constant lies
>it can do context!
>it's uncensored! Everything else is censored!
>it's 100% playable!
don't help with that "trust". There's the saying fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, but by this point "progress" is just an excuse for you to seethe that fooling the same player 10 times doesn't work as effectively.

>>12823145
AI is naturally more correct than a human translator, so it wins by default.

it's closer to calling someone an idiot or a dumbfuck. bastard is interchangable in certain contexts, but often you're not calling someone a dumbfuck for the same reason you would call them a bastard.
>>
>>12824754
also to make you feel worse, ふざける doesn't translate exactly to "Shut up!" i'm guessing it's okay here because anime boy is crying in disbelief, faux pleading about some other character idk i don't watch shitty anime. but it's better as "Stop kidding around!" or "Stop joking!", "Stop messing with me!", something along those lines.

i mean, surely you'd know that telling someone to shut up in japanese sounds more like うるさい!, or だまれ!, right anon-kun??

While it is literally a strong way of calling someone an idiot, it's definitely not as strong as the English "dumbfuck." If I saw someone translate it like that, I'd laugh.
Bastard is definitely an acceptable translation, given that it comes after a noun adjunct like tsundere.
>>12825005
Oh, you don't make me feel bad. I know too much Japanese to fall for the "it doesn't me X, it means Y" routine on 4chan. You'll find that in imperative forms of verbs, the literal meaning might change based on the context. ふざけるな is a good example of that. When used as a rebuke, it often gets shortened in translation to a generic command such as, "cut it out" or "knock it off" (or just "shut up" in this case).
