They’re a cool party trick, and you might think it’s like playing the real thing, but in the end you’re having a lesser experience by yourself on a device that was never designed for big screens or tactile input.

I'm getting sick of this shit, maybe Sega System spam wasn't that bad after all, at least it happened and got cleaned up after a while. This shit is just tiring, it lingers, and it's just going to get worse now that everyone and their mother can just say "Hey computer, make this game work" and then dump the results on github, and then inevitably shill it on /vr/, and then Video game Esoterica catches wind of it and shills again on /vr/ along with himself. Mods need to intervene already.

Recomps are only becoming popular now because zoomers suddenly have the chance to play their “retro” childhood 7th and 8th gen trash natively on PC without the overhead of emulation

These “people” all need to get the fuck out and go back to >>>/v/
>>
>>12865658
A lot of these projects are playable on browser, and by extension phone, I think that's a huge deal for a lot of people. PCS are so expensive right now that I think a lot of gen alpha don't even have access to one, which is sad.
>>
>>12865578
A great use of AI would be to make Bleem usable on modern hardware. AFAIK, Bleem has some form of "DRM" that only runs on hardware that was available at the time of its release.

are you actually, genuinely fucking stupid? Emulation is incredible and industry changing. My entire exposure to retro games is through emulation and so it is for everyone else. "a cool party trick" you're fucking retarded. I don't even personally see the point of decomps when any troglodyte can just emulate a game, but if decomps are analogous to emulation, that makes them very important.

>without the overhead of emulation
It's still there, input lag and all. Fighting game slop recomps are unplayable.
It's the worst of both worlds. Even the "mods" are repackaged romhacks or emulated features that were already released for the original version.

This is no different than fitgirl telling you she has a PC version of Bayonetta 2 or a No-Denuvo version of Persona 5 and it's just an emulator, a 5.8 GB file, and a shortcut to directly boot ingame (already possible with launchers for an entire library not just the one game the clout chaser decided to feature), bundled with her installer that fries your GPU almost as fast as DLSS5. Or the "mobile ports" that end up Android forks of yuzu.

You can feel the desperation "it's better than emulators" "emulators are no longer needed" or whatever. Emulators can already do this. Even the dynamic recompilation thing. If Dolphin decided tomorrow that they would allow their users to prepare a file that does static decompilation of their game (and it would be trivial) that would be no different than what these "recomps" purport to do.

maybe down in Islamabad but not over here in civilization, Mehmoud.
>>
>>12865693
I saw there was a street fighter 4 AI thing that gave it rollback and lobbies, not really a decompilation but it is the first AI project I've seen that is legitimatelly good and something that seemed outside the scope of most modders.
>>
>>12865693
Many vibe coded decomps are basically emulators that only work for one game.

> If Dolphin decided tomorrow that they would allow their users to prepare a file that does static decompilation of their game (and it would be trivial) that would be no different than what these "recomps" purport to do.
isn't dolphin open source? so anyone could fork it and do that and pass around the fork? call it killer whale or some shit
>>
>>12865693
>>12865707
UltraHLE back in this bitch
>>
>>12865705
That's a different thing. It found an open source implementation of rollback and injected it in another project.

With the FGC autism over what version or emulator is banned or allowed I'm pretty sure someone might have had the idea at some point but dropped it. And even then the slop wave quickly followed, a similar project released this week for Brawl / Project M and it was a vibecoded disaster - cheat menus and plagiarized the work of one project and the name of another project to force insert itself into an existing community with different goals.

Is a recomp bad if it makes a retro game simply run better (framerate, resolution, etc) on original hardware without any bugs or changes in gameplay?

Honestly playing Playstation games on my Dreamcast and PC was mind-blowing at the time.

Sucks that Sony had to be uptight and sue the makers of Bleem.
>>
>>12865705
AI can do stuff like that and even good recomp/decomps but it takes oversight and some skill from the prompter to correct and fill in gaps. Most of this stuff is just the sloppiest slop imaginable that's being rushed out into the world for no real reason
>>
FUCK OFF SPAMMERS
>>
>>12865710
I should know better than longpost rant in a recomp thread but fuck it

There are "features" that emulators technically have, but were hamstrung by moral faggotry over copyrighted assets or whatever. Official emulators, developed by Nintendo or Microsoft, on the other hand, had no issues including them.

>Shader Caches
Mainly relevant for PS2/GameCube onwards. If the implementation is correct, these shader caches can be "transferrable" (not GPU-exclusive), and they would help a lot with emulation performance.
Microsoft X360 official retro-compatibility with OG XB bundles shader cache files with the game download.

>Unpacking the game files to a folder
Possible with most emulators after Dolphin. As easy as right-clicking the ISO and selecting the option. The unpacked version is playable too. It reduces disk space usage and removes bloat. Some hate it though under the guise you're not "preserving" the whole disk.
Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony do this for their retro services.
>>
>>12865746
>Most of this stuff is just the sloppiest slop imaginable that's being rushed out into the world for no real reason
There is a reason: clout and money from engagement. That's literally all they care about, which is why they're abandoned shortly after its no longer relevant to the algorithm.
>>
>>12865718
Apparently something called "ember" already existed, and the AI just created a frontend and stripped out the creator credit. Maximillion was playing it the other day and I'm honestly really bummed out he didn't do any due dilligence on this stuff.
>>
>>12865762
>Recompiler (JIT Just-In-Time vs Static Ahead-Of-Time)
Ever since the PS2/GameCube it was unfeasible to run the game in interpreter mode (just translating the game code from original hardware to current platform assembly language). The performance is very slow and the framerate practically in the single digits. Dolphin and other emulators introduced JIT which optimizes this further to prepare C++ code for the "frequently used code areas" and use these instead of the regular interpreter code. That leads to the currently acceptable framerates on emulation.
The game devs make executables (and additional executables, aka overlays) small on purpose to fit the limited RAM memory. Usually 4MB. Would last only a little over a minute or two. Nothing prevents the Dolphin from adding an option to "unpack" the executable and convert it entirely to native machine code and use it as further optimization. Maybe a security alert to always generate it on your own to avoid malicious outside code.

Nintendo did this with Super Mario 3D All Stars, specifically for Super Mario Galaxy. All three games run on their emulator, but SMG in particular has its executable replaced with an alternate executable that was recompiled for Switch. There's otherwise no difference from emulation. If you used the original SMG iso without that file you could emulate SMG just fine with some frame drops.

What this means

emulator developers knew before that doing static recompilation as a pre-generated file instead than on the fly had negligible performance gains, used up space, and wasn't a huge deal. But should they add a launcher mode "for absolute noobs" that's just a shortcut to the game, a launch screen that has "Gamepad Settings" "Resolution: 4K" "Widescreen: On/Off" "Fullscreen: On/Off" like any other barebones official PC port roasted by DF for its lack of options (but the best thing ever for recomps), "Use Static Recompiled Executable" then wow the entire console library is "recomped".

This is a great writeup, thanks anon.
>>
>>12865772

>>12865693
Maybe I’m biased because I’m only trying n64 games so far but you are insane if you think it’s just emulation with extra steps in terms of the n64. Emulation barely works, while these recomps are playing stuff like Perfect Dark at 5x the dismal framerate you get on real hardware with less fog and twin stick support for the games that would benefit from it. The jury is out for me on whether it makes sense for any other /vr/ systems, but I’m interested to see what it can do for the other 5th gen systems in particular.
>>
>>12865787
Well, the distinction is that the emulation devs were devs, these slopjobs are just people who paid the $20 for the subsciption.

>Sucks that Sony had to be uptight and sue the makers of Bleem.
Bleem was a company and basically a videogame publisher, they covertly collaborated with Sega of America to have the DreamCast support the PS1 catalogue there during the PS1 lifetime. (Not that Sony wasn't playing dirty with sabotaging DC third party support, but that's besides the point.) After they legally bullied them out of existence they head hunted the ex-developers to do their own PS1 retro-compatibility mode on the PSP.

There's a fine line between "I'll send vaguely threatening letters to them (UltraHLE) but not scare them off completely so that I can use their work for my overpriced digital vault retro game shop years later" and "this is an existential threat to my business" and the likes of Bleem and Yuzu (also an LLC, incidentally) flirted with it too much for their own good.
>>
>>12865578
You're an idiot.
>>
>>12865792
>Emulation barely works
N64 emulation is horrible and confusing but with the right emulator and preset you get an emulated version that plays at full speed even on old computers, with mostly correct graphical effects (the "mostly" is because they're best played with CRT shaders or some smoothing filters for particularly textures and polygons never meant to be visible at higher resolutions - which a recomp doesn't fix), and you can even add the mouse control hooker.

The real fix isn't dubious executables made by vibecoders with a weird hateboner to any alternative information, but a better N64 emulator launcher that loads each game with its recommended values and makes use of the existing work. Then you would have your one-click hassle free superior experience. Gamecube emulation is just as bad by the way but you never notice it because Dolphin auto-detects and auto-applies prepared and community-curated settings for each game.

As much as you delude yourself into thinking that, no one believes the 4300 retro games each deserve a thread where OP masturbates about his buggy emulator wrapper that introduces zero original content and goes on platitudes about AI while being very obviously completely disinterested with the game or how it plays (to the point of "porting" games already ported and perfected years ago) and spreading misinformation about it to promote his shit software.

The CRT thread actually used to help improve emulation aka what you're stealing your content from. You're a cancerous parasite actively killing its host, be it emulation or this board.

Let me know when decomps or emulation actually get N64 timing accurate after all these years.

The gamecube port of ocarina used an fmv cutscene for the credits for this reason, and that was a source port from nintendo. A decompilation could absolutely just throw a capture of the end credits though lol.
>>
>>12866028
It would be more than super obvious at 1080p and above. You could get away with it at 480, not in HD.

>>
>>12866032
meh, i'd like to see them actually fix it instead of complaining that it doesn't "just work" with a consistent framerate

you have the fucking game decompiled into its source code... rewrite the ending credits to work at any framerate!!!
>>
>>12866023
Neither do recomps lol

Wait, you can already emulate the official emulation of OoT and it has the correct timing.
Never mind that, it's already ported to DEcomps and implemented in some emulators.

But really? OoT music cutscene timing? What else? N64 texture mapping? Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel. Aren't "recomps" shipping with way worse and way more noticeable bugs (like huge broken transparency rectangles and crackling sound) than these details? Someone obsessed with those details would just emulate on ares or play on real hardware, NOT use the shitty recomp.
>>
>>12865578
"Decomp" does not mean vibecoded slop, pajeet.
Go back to your dedicated containment board >>>/g/
>>
>>12865585
I hate AI slop as much as the next person, but I'll still take these decomp/recomp/translation threads over fucking Sega System spam.
>>
>>12866038
>But really? OoT music cutscene timing? What else?
N64 emulation still has timing issues in general, the OoT thing is just one example and it's kind of jarring since most people would watch the credits as it has a bunch of scenes that show what happens after the game.

>making things more accessible to normies is a good thing
we have 20+ years of evidence to prove this wrong
