Who in their right mind is out here buying original discs and cartridges in today's market, when you can get all of this shit online for free and either emulate or mod your original hardware (or use an Everdrive)?

Like who tf is out here paying 100+ dollars on Parappa the Rapper lmfao

It's nostalgia fueled mental illness. Think collecting Funko Pops but a thousand times more autistic.

Sour grapes

/vr/ scalpers are exactly like financial domination e-whores. What they're doing is not exactly moral but all of the blame should be on their idiotic masochistic paypig supporters.

There are people who enjoy collecting things for the sake of it, as well as liking the fact that they own something speculatively expensive compared to other people.
To them it gives them perceived-status over others whilst reaffirming their belief that their purchase was an informed and rational one, rather than emotionally driven.
They have to double down on this due to the cognitive dissonance of knowing that their 'valuables' are essentially worthless from a 'play' perspective, as yes you can make a million copies of Persona 2 on your computer and play them on almost anything these days.
Nevertheless the lizard-brain will tell them that their item is more 'authentic' despite never being used or appreciated for its actual valuable worth (play) but rather as a speculative asset (property) to own, flaunt, and eventually never sell, only for it to be thrown in the skip by their descendants.

But if they enjoy it then more power to them.

Reminder that discs and cartridges will all rot away and they have zero value. If anything, the only thing retro that has value are the consoles themselves, and even those are all dying soon. so who cares, just get a chink handheld for 50 bucks and emulate everything
>>

I ALWAYS use original hardware with flashcarts or softmod to play games. Even if I own the original game cartridges or discs, I prefer using the alternative way to load the games.I like the convenience of a "digital" library. BUT, if I discover a new game that I enjoy A LOT, I still want to purchase a physical copy of it.

I have a big collection. I own basically every console or handheld worth owning, and have well over 1000 games. I have been actively collecting since the end of 2016 and I still pick up new stuff all the time (although I have had some dry spells where I didn't buy anything for a while). Lately I've been on a Neogeo kick and added around 46 titles to my collection along with an AES and a Fusion Adapter.

Why is that a problem? I like having this stuff, it makes me happy, and it's not like I can't afford it. My bills are paid, I own my home outright, I don't have any debts, and I have savings equivalent to more than a year's worth of my salary. Why are you so upset if I want to buy more video games to add to my library?

my copy of valkyrie profile was only played for 5 minutes but it's been opened, do you think it would be worth the trouble of trying to ebay it? i could use the money to clear some debt and i have no attachment to it until my copy of xenogears or other square games

I don't think anyone on here is against the collecting part, for the most part... A small personal collection is one thing, but I do think having 1000+ physical games is borderline mental illness, but that's beside the point.

Most people get mad when it delves into the second half of what anon >>12870131 said. It just shows a greedy side of people in this scene that's honestly fucking disgusting and people like you facilitate scalpers being the pieces of shit they are.

Many such times!
>>
>>12870159
No that's retarded. I don't care about the supposed monetary value and I don't resell games or buy from scalpers anyway. Their value is whatever value I see in them based on how much fun I have playing them, and I hunt for deals and only pay under market value.

If this is mental illness, then so is having a library card.
>>
>>12870164
Where did you find that picture of anon?
>>
>>12870121
Collecting is a separate hobby from gaming. Men feel compelled to collect things. I collect the hardware, and I enjoy modding/soldering (tinkering in general). They are all three separate overlapping hobbies. I don't believe in buying used game because it's an endless, space consuming, expensive hobby that results in me playing the exact same game I would be playing on a flashcart anyways. I don't care that people collect things, it just annoys me when people buy endless games and never actually play them, it drives up the prices for those who would want to actually play the games but for whatever reason are incapable of figuring out how to run an emulator or make a flashcart work.
>>
>>12870164
We don't need daily threads on how retro games are expensive. Fuck you and die.
>>
If you think retro games and you only think about the games in your picture, you have basic bitch taste. You can find cheaper games on even that console for significantly cheaper. For those high priced games you weren't able to get when they were cheap, yeah, just emulate.
>>
>>12870121
>(or use an Everdrive)?
Everdrives are overpriced too. Why would you pay $100 when you can get a single cart flashcart for $10. or a knockoff everdrive for like $30
>>
Yeah, or no. Whatever.
>>
The real mental illness is making threads like these.
>>
>>12870121
Normal people will gradually grow a physical library of things they love and enjoy experiencing. Performative e-celeb cooooomlectors who have thousands of games theyll never touch or get around to playing are fake and gay. They ruin the hobby for others who simply enjoy playing on og hardware and want to be left alone.
>>
>>12870121
yes. paying money for things that are free is retarded.
>>
>>12870121
I do it and I don't think it's that stupid. I've spent about 1k on games this summer that I've found for about 50% of pricecharting or less. Then sold back about $600 worth of it locally, now I have $1,500 worth of games I payed $400 for, I can play and enjoy and whenever I want to get rid of them I can cash them out and make money (I'm not going to do that but it's always an option).

Collecting isn't a hobby, it's a byproduct of a hobby. I buy games because I want to play them, and because I play a lot of games that means I have a collection because I have to put them somewhere when they're not sitting inside of my console.
I buy books because I want to read them, and they become a collection because they sit on my shelf when I'm not reading them.
I buy CDs because I want to listen to them, and they become a collection because I have to put them somewhere when they're not in my stereo.
Anything you are interested in will turn into a collection because that's what happens when you buy stuff. I have an ocarina collection, not because I want to collect ocarinas but because I play the ocarina (yes, Zelda) and there's something different about each one that makes them worth keeping around.
Being a game collector just means you play a lot of video games.
>>
>>12870121
Maybe they like having the boxes displayed in their room, who knows.
Buying and collecting stuff gives a sense of satisfaction, and yes it makes you want to post images of it online or show them to your friends. It's generally not with the intent of causing envy, more like a way of self expression, like saying "check this out, I'm THIS dedicated to my hobby".
I don't collect games but I do collect some other costly things, some of them electronic which means they could eventually stop working, so I understand. Some people collect much more expensive stuff, like watches and shoes.
>>
>>12870121
>Who in their right mind is out here buying original discs and cartridges in today's market, when you can get all of this shit online for free and either emulate or mod your original hardware (or use an Everdrive)?
Because i want to have a physical representation of my favorite games, ones that exist in the real world and not in a computer away from the console or in a hard drive

>Reminder that discs and cartridges will all rot away and they have zero value
Optical Discs have a lifespan of atleast a century. No factory pressed disc has experienced that.
>the only thing retro that has value are the consoles themselves, and even those are all dying soon
No they won't. Silicon chips don't die and break up all of a sudden. The RROD & YLOD are just the CPU or GPU being unglued from the motherboard, which is totally fixable
Retro consoles and games will outlive your hypothetical grandchildren, brown incel

If you’re spending more than 20$ on a retro game 9/10 that’s impulse buying and not collecting. I’ve been collecting vinyl since I was in high school in 2000 and retro games since college in 2002. I’ve seen both markets balloon and crater; if you’re patient you can usually find your white whale at a reasonable price. If you’re impulsive you’ll spend 200$ on a video game or 60$ on a record.

Buying games is less of a hassle. I only buy DC/PS1/PS2, but on all of those the physical games are so advantageous they're worth having

>PS1
No good console-accurate storage methods across all PS1 models, and none on PS2. The best PS1 solutions require soldered mods that only work on a few models. Best overall PS1/PS2 option is CD-R backups that wear on your laser, which requires like 4+ different softmods/boot methods depending on console, and there's STILL expections where certain models just won't work.

>PS2
Many different storage methods with bad to perfect results, but the best options require running a PC. Harddrive options are for fat models only, so you can't easily switch to a slim console.

>DC
GDemu is great, but requires you designate a console to not play discs (and apparently newer clones have issues with disc swap button). CD-R backups require a modified game to stay under the 700mb limit, which means heavily compressed audio, missing textures, etc

With original pressed discs, it just works. Performance is obviously exactly as it should be.
Obviously there's a lot of reason to appreciate the design and presentation of a video game ie. packaging, but if you're a retard with ADHD you won't appreciate or even recognize it.

>emulation on PC or shitty chink device
lmao
If you don't care about the console or the games, sure. For your favorite stuff, you need to have better standards
>>
>>12870136
Lol just like anon said, sour grapes cope.

I like these threads because it creates less competition for me to get shit if people actually follow ops dumb ass advice.
>>

>It's nostalgia fueled mental illness
I disagree with this, at least from OPs example. Expensive games are rare because they sold poorly, and people who genuinely enjoyed them in their prime just bought a retail copy when it was new and relevant. Rentals existed, but the games that really mattered to you, you ended up buying them (video store $5 bin as their rental life came to an end).

Its synthetic nostalgia from youtube, people under 35 coveting games released when they were 2 year old. Ops photo is nothing more than trophies to be used as props for social media clout, they are not a gamer and there is no nostalgia involved.
>>
>>12870429
So what hobby is Funko Pop then? Watches? Art?
I think you're wrong, but you clearly play your games, so my thoughts aren't an attack on you. You play your collection, but I'm still convinced it's two separate hobbies, you're just not performative.
>>
>>12870121
it's just money laundering
>>
>>12870121
I don't want the decision paralysis of every game ever made, I don't want to emulate on my modern hardware, I want a physical library sitting on my shelf for me to put in the console and boot it up on a CRT with zero distractions or loopholes. I want all the details of playing video games to match what I was doing in the 90s because my brain is Proustpilled and nostalgia gives me dopamine. I don't care about the price because I get to cultivate my personal aesthetic, I own the media and can resell it if I want.

Rule #1 in life: Never underestimate how dumb most people are. They have no clue how to emulate or mod their consoles.
>>
>>12870159
>I don't think anyone on here is against the collecting part, for the most part...

Yes they are. A fundamental aspect of 4chan culture is being against EVERYTHING. The message underlying most posts on this site is "I want to die but I'm too lazy or frightened to kill myself." It's silly to look past that and talk about what these people are pretending to talk about as if that's the real topic motivating the conversation. They are basically just venting bad feelings and, to some extent, implicitly asking you to come and find them and free them (from life).

Anyway, on the fake surface-level topic: I like buying old games on eBay so that I can then play them. I only get fairly cheap ones and I only buy things I actually intend to play. I don't have any extremely strong reason to do this instead of emulating or using flashcarts or the like. But it doesn't cost very much money and it mildly pleases me to have the real physical objects, so I don't need an extremely strong reason.
>>
>>12870879
>Its synthetic nostalgia from youtube,
I started buying old games on eBay before YouTube existed, and my reasons for doing it have not changed since then. Does YouTube send synthetic nostalgia generation rays back in time?
