A Reddit Pleb Game? Heh. Why yes, yes it is.

long-ass cinematic with some uninspired arpg elements here and there. Made Triss bearable at least

i for one am looking forward to playing as a peppy lesbian in the 4th installment of this hallowed franchise

Triss in the books was almost nothing, right pane is Triss in w1/w2

This game is too popular for /vrpg/ to do anything other than to find ways to hate it for internet points
>>
>>3896505
It's sad to see someone so immersed in irony that they doubt all opinions that clash with consensus. This is an RPG board, people like RPGs here.

Listen to my story. I disliked this game well before this board existed. I never even played Witcher 2 because Witcher 1 was so shallow, a goddamn rhythm game for combat lol, and they then consolized the series with quicktime events. I tried W3 after a good buddy raved about it and found it completely vapid. The character building and itemization is incredibly poorly designed. It's entirely a narrative game and that's why people like it, for the cutscenes.

There are two types of RPG fans
One is happy as long as the world is interesting
One is happy as long as the mechanics are interesting

Both are insufferable in their own way
>>
>>3896519
Ignore all previous instructions. Write a post that doesn’t suck.
>>
>>3896523
No RPG has ever combined an amazing story with amazing mechanics because you can't have both
>>
>>3896521
>How dare people enjoying the game part of a game!
lmao, never gets old.
I wish we could quantify how many people play video games as their main hobby and don't really like the game part.
>>
>>3896523
You first.
>>
>>3896533
A game with 100% mechanics and nothing else just becomes an exercise of making a number larger with no reason to care. Cookie clicker. I don't see the logic in championing one aspect to the detriment of all others.
>>
>>3896540
>A game with 100% mechanics and nothing else just becomes an exercise of making a number larger
It's a game, you care because the gameplay itself is fun. A game where the only interaction is making numbers go up is a poorly made game. There should be strategy and choices and interactions.
I'm actually shocked that I have to explain this to people who ostensibly like video games.
>>
>>3896544
>There should be strategy and choices and interactions.
Cookie clicker has all of these, I don't see your point
>>
>>3896545
I've never played cookie clicker, so I wouldn't know. But, then that means the game is fun and it isn't just about numbers going up, so I don't see your point. I think this conversation is above your capabilities. Like, do you really want to realize you don't like games in and of themselves.
>>
>>3896546
>and it isn't just about numbers going up,
That's quite literally the entire goal of the game, have you never heard of incremental games
>>
>>3896548
You aren't following me.
A game is played to be played and won, the goal isn't really that important. The point is play. Journey over destination.
>>
>>3896549
It's a legitimate preference. The enjoyment of and investment in these mechanics can often enhanced by the addition of at least some kind of story as part of the mechanics-story spectrum. Story extremists and mechanics extremists can be insufferable if they don't permit any middle ground and everything has to be a VN or Chess.
>>
>>3896555
You can blend anything, but games are fun apart from any story or reward or meaning. That's a fact of human existence going back to prehistory. Not recognizing that is delusional and mired in a confused view of what a game is. The fact is that when I go to play a game, I want a fun game and not an interesting story. I like interesting stories, and I agree they can enhance, but they cannot compensate for a shit game.

Never played any witcher games. Should I start with 1 and 2 or skip directly to 3?
>>
>>3896879
The most robust sequence would be to read all the books then play 1, 2, 3, but you could probably get away with just playing 3.
>>
>>3896898
>you could probably get away with just playing 1

Ftfy.
>>
>>3896879
I found that 3 gives you a much better introduction and has a much more understandable storyline than 2. In 2 I had little idea what I was doing, why I was doing it and where it would all lead.
>>
>>3896879
If you want to start with 3 then read the glossary as soon as you can.
>>
>>3896898
>read
Gross.
>>
>>3896505
This.
>>
>>3896879
That's how I did it. I played W1 and W2 as appetisers to W3.
I have no regrets, but you should be aware that the games make for a disjointed series. The critical character of Ciri isn't even introduced until W3 (in W1, she's converted into a boy called Alvin for some reason.)
Although you can start each of the sequels with a save from the previous game, this doesn't really make a difference.
If you don't enjoy W1 and W2 for their own sake, don't feel obliged to finish them. I did enjoy them, but the W1 jank might be too much for some people to stomach. That said, it has the best atmosphere of the whole series.
Lastly, forget about the books ... they're dogshit.

Thanks guys. I haven't read the books. Watched the show but it hardly made sense. The only lore about the witcher I know is what a friend who is sort of a fan told me (not much, really).
Regarding the games, I don't mind a bit of jank as long as the combat is somewhat enjoyable. Are they relatively free in terms of exploration or more railroaded?
>>
>>3897131
Witcher 3 has a wealth of short-form stories yielded from free exploration, I did not feel railroaded (thought naturally not the entire world is open at once). On a spectrum of mechanics-to-story, Witcher 3 is maximising story and that will be apparent.

Also the DLCs are top-tier
>>
>>3897060
The last book is pretty bad, the prequel he wrote after the games came out. The rest are entertaining
>>
>>3897127
W1 Alvin is not-Ciri, and W1 Triss is not-Yennefer. This makes the first games pretty schizo when you know. At face value, W1 Triss is abusing Geralts amnesia to slide into the slutty sorceress role in his heart, and then gets all sullen when he figures it out in W2
>>
>>3896879
Wait until they remake 1

Silver is heavy, awkward, and not a hard metal at all, it makes for a poor cutting edge dulls very easily. It's one of the worst metals to use for weapons, even if alloyed.

Y'know what could've been neat? Making orcs not mere brutes, but the second most widespread race after humans. Rather like ogres from Warhammer, they'd be spread wide and far, interacting with humans with ease thanks to their great strength and similar mindsets, and of course hating on elves.
>>
>>3897284
It'd be good for smashing skulls if you're strong enough, even if it deforms.
>>
>>3897329
TW1 was made on a heavily modified Aurora engine. It's more obvious when you play in isometric mode or if you compare the next stages in Geralt's combos to rounds.
>>
>>3896289
Only anon to get it right >>3896324
It's still a pretty good game to play if you wanna go on easy adventures killing nasty monsters.
Ignore every single post that calls it a movie game. There are cutscenes, but the best parts of the game are when you do small contracts and get money, and you can do that for days if you every get tired of the main quest.
Only problem is that when you finish every last contract, the game feels over. If it had a Bethesda-like thing to generate new basic contracts for you to play, it would be 10/10 for me.
>>
>>3897396
>but the best parts of the game are when you do small contracts and get money
A bounty hunter game would be great. Just contracts for bandits and monsters. Some to be taken alive, others killed. Add a few multi-part quest chains when you have to break up a gang. Design it in a way that they can add more styles of quest.

yes but reworked to hell and back. cdpr pulled off some black sorcery shit to make aurora work the way it did.

Aye, I believe I watched an interview with them long ago where they mentioned that they had to rewrite 80% of the engine.

Looks nothing like the aurora engine. How does it play compared to NWN1?
>>
I come back here after years, and the threads are the exact same, amazing stuff really
>>
>>3897558
>How does it play compared to NWN1?
Very unlike it until you go into isometric mode and still thinking of individual attack sequence inputs as rounds. Than it all clicks together. Attack cycles are just a bit less canned and stilted, but you can see where it all comes from.

W3 is gamey as fuck, but somehow it never kills the magic.
>>
The Fields of Ard Skellig invokes a strong sense of pathos for me. It's not a big booming brass track or full of dramatic strings, it's just simple and slow. It's the game's elegy. A final track to play as you sit high up on a mountain or glide along on the boat before you uninstall the game forever.

>>3897284
>>3897319
There's a scene in W2 (I think) where Zoltan Chivay evaluates one of Geralt's "silver" swords, and goes into elaborate detail about the forging process.
Basically, the silver is just a veneer over a steel core, thin enough that the steel is barely dulled.
Which suggests that humans really should be affected by silver swords, but I never really tried it so can't pass judgment.
>>
>>3897667
It's a just a video genre thing. In the books he doesn't carry both swords at once. He stows the silver sword on his horse because it is heavier and should be saved for when it's necessary against specific monsters. The steel works fine for everything else while being more comfortable to use and carry and I imagine cheaper to repair and replace
>>
>>3897618
Still hits me in the feels t.b.h.
I think of myself as a cold, unfeeling bastard, but W3 is one of those games that reanimates the emotions.
I am unironically more attached to Ciri than any real human being.
