Also includes surgical cric (cutting a hole in your throat).>IV and IO (needle in bone to give meds) insertion>And much moreIn very busy systems, it's typically one paramedic and one EMT due to staffing constraints. If the call requires medic skills then the EMT drives. If it's a basic easy call, then usually the medic drives. In smaller areas you may have two medics on one truck. Some podunk backwater areas may only have ECAs (can basically only do CPR if needed). EMS typically operates on what's called delegated practice which means that you are under a doctor that writes protocols. If the doctor trains you to do crazy shit and lets you do it then you can do it despite not being taught it in school.I think some European countries have paramedic as a bachelor's degree. Go figure. In America, a good chunk of EMS and Fire end up being volunteer.

A lot of these deaths pre-hospital were very preventable which spawned a paper called "Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society" Sometimes we call this the White Paper and it was basically the start of EMS as we know it. A lot of it was based off the work of soldiers. Why were shot soldiers living and citizens in a car crash not? The soldier is getting patched up by his corpman. Hell, they were transfusing plasma in the field in WWII (You can see this in Band of Brothers).Another big thing that made paramedicine popular in America was a show called Emergency. It came out in the 70s and serves a good time capsule as to what EMS was like back then. It made people want paramedics in their city because it's technically not an essential service everywhere (and it still isn't).Okay sorry for my autism.
