Let me explain some of the unique characteristics of the Korean VTuber market.First of all, before VTuber culture was introduced to Korea, there was already an established culture of PNGTubers. In Korea, many of these streamers either used static character images or streamed with their webcams showing only their bodies while keeping their faces cropped out. Because of this, people started using the derogatory term "Dullahan" to refer to them. Eventually, the term became so widespread that almost all PNGTubers in the Korean streaming community came to be called Dullahans.One of the factors that contributed to these Dullahans dominating Korea's subculture streaming scene was the decline of the Korean voice acting industry. Many young aspiring voice actors at the time gave up on pursuing careers in voice acting and instead entered the livestreaming industry.As a result, even today, there are still plenty of PNGTubers in Korea's subculture streaming scene who either influence VTubers, share similar audiences with them, or are practically part of the same community.For example, Tamtamvely (TamTamberin), who occasionally appears as a VTuber on viewership tracking websites, and Kangji, the founder of STELLIVE, were both prominent figures in the Dullahan (PNGTuber) community.Even the YouTuber who created Isegye Idol was originally part of the Dullahan streaming scene.To give you an idea of what kind of content these Dullahans used to make, let's take Kangji as an example.During her early streaming career, Kangji was extremely determined to succeed, so she frequently collaborated with numerous male streamers who showed their faces on camera. Through those collaborations, she built connections, which then helped her expand her network even further. Eventually, she also started making connections with people overseas.After hearing about the growing success of VTubers in Japan, Kangji even established a VTuber company in Japan. However, that venture ultimately failed, and she returned to Korea, where she later founded STELLIVE, bringing us to where things stand today.Because of this history, most Korean VTubers naturally inherited the streaming styles and culture that had already been established by Dullahans (PNGTubers).Their audiences were either very similar or had gradually transitioned from watching Dullahans to watching VTubers. In other words, Korean VTuber culture wasn't built entirely from scratch. It largely evolved from the existing Dullahan streaming culture through a natural generational shift.One of the defining characteristics of traditional Dullahan streams was their heavy emphasis on "Woo-gyeol" (우결), or virtual relationship roleplay, usually involving romantic interactions with male streamers.Since viewers who strongly disliked this type of content were relatively a minority compared to the overall live audience, romantic relationship roleplay became increasingly normalized in the Korean streaming scene.As a result, Woo-gyeol eventually developed into an established form of entertainment in Korea, sometimes as a short-term event and other times as a long-running storyline.This is why, when Korean VTubers participate in large roleplay servers organized by major streamers, their interactions can naturally develop into romantic or dating roleplay scenarios.STELLIVE hasn't shown much indication of moving in that direction so far, but some of its members seem to have the mindset that as long as they're participating in an RP server, they should be free to immerse themselves in the roleplay and have fun however they want, including romantic scenarios.
