Funny you use this argument, since a lot of street performers think up quirky ways to get people to drop more money for them. Whether or not the reasons are valid, the main issue is a lack of self-awareness that their words have consequences. "I'm just expressing my opinion" is used as a blanket justification to abnegate all responsibility for one's speech because the people involved ultimately care more about venting than they do with bringing the mood down for everyone else.

You'd be surprised. Fans will still call you parasocial if you choose what to do with your own money. Didn't anons get upset when we had an anon that said they treat vtubers like dolls to play with and drops them if they don't entertain them anymore? Damned if you do, damned if you don't as they say. But I digress. I think it goes a bit beyond just getting what you paid for and leaving it at that. Otherwise why would I buy voice packs and acrylic standees? I don't think anyone buys it to look at it for 5 mins and then throws them away. It's more of an investment than a purchase. And not just a financial investment. It's time, money, and love.

Big disagree. Your oshi does owe you entertainment. That's what they were hired for. Otherwise why do they hold auditions? Why do they open memberships? Why do they promise projects for fans? Yes if I'm spending time watching them, liking the videos to push them in the algorithm, commenting, following them on twitter, and doing all the usual fan things to help my oshi achieve their goals, why is it outrageous to ask for even a little something in return? I know some people will take this to the extreme so I'll clarify that when I say "your oshi owes you entertainment" I literally just mean do the vtuber things that vtubers do, even if it's the bare minimum. Otherwise I'm sure Anycolor would just put the PNGs of the livers into the void with no voices or personality behind them and just have people buy literal soulless merch of them. I'll put it this way:

and personally, i think that way of thinking would just make you unhappy. i've been there before. i have merch of people i don't care for anymore and i've donated to people i grew to dislike. but i've learned to just treat it as a "payment" for the time and enjoyment i had with them. that's all i can do. trying to intentionally change someone you don't know is futile, it's already hard enough to do it to someone you do know.

if i've learned anything from being in this fandom it's that it's better to oshi someone that's been around for a while, like maybe a few years, because at least you have a decent idea of what to expect and they're more or less settled on the kind of content they provide and things they do, vs someone who you immediately oshi on debut and it's a wild ride that could crash really bad. but that's just me
