Secret characters unlocked with something obscured or grindy are kind of in bad taste but there are plenty of games which only give you first one or few noob-friendly basic characters first, after getting through a few stages you unlock a new guy, game completion gets you another and so on in a very natural progression. This basically unlocks you everything by playing the intended way and ensuring your first impression isn't had with some advanced gimmick character.
