>2TB seagate external has been clicking forever now>Finally go get a new external to back up stuff before this one finally croaks>Plug both in and my ailing seagate just fucking dies>whenever plugged in now the light will stay on for a while and then just fade outJust fucking end me.Have i gotten my just desserts or is there any good solutions to salvaging the stuff on there? Any help would be appreciated.
I remember doing this shit all the time when I was like 20-30 and still dumb as fuck.Don't worry man, this is life teaching you a lesson. People usually are too stupid to learn a lesson unless it hits them hard as FUCK. If this never happened you wouldn't give a flying fuck about backups AM I RIGHT?
>>1503186>any good solutions to salvaging the stuff on there?I don't think there's anything you can do on your own. There are places that can restore data off dead hard drives, but I think they can be expensive.
>>1503186aren't external SSDs a thing now?
>>1503201Their price per storage capacity is also a thing>inb4 well OP is paying the price for going with unreliable and slow mechanical hdd's are his own fault thenI get that. I'm just saying.
The lesson isn't get a new hard drive if it seems like your old one is going to die.The lesson is if you don't have redundancy you don't have a backup.
>>1503186This might sound stupid but it's worth a try. Plug it and unplug it repeatedly from the drive side of the cable, keeping the disk at different angles each time. If it's a hardware failure you might find a spot where it can still start up long enough to recover the data. This has allowed me to restore plenty of old drives that seemed to be already dead.
>>1503186>>whenever plugged in now the light will stay on for a while and then just fade outGreat, sounds like the external HDD adapter is fucked. This is fixable for a couple bucks, buy thishttps://www.amazon.com/ORICO-External-Enclosure-Support-Tool-Free/dp/B01LY97QE8Then shuck your Seagate drive, should go something like https://youtube.com/watch?v=3510TQlzD8ISlap your bare HDD in your new adapter. Try to use the USB cable from Seagate, it's higher quality than the chinese junk
>>1503211he also said "It's been clicking forever".
>>1503215I didn't say it would fix that. But but the USB adapters can and do fail, and are easily replaced. That sentence he wrote is a description of a USB board failure. *If* I'm wrong, what harm did I cause him? I cost him $8
>>1503220>I didn't say it would fix that. But but the USB adapters can and do fail, and are easily replacedI've messed with a few externals and as far as I can tell the most common symptom for a bad adapter is 1. data is accidentally formatted/lost and 2. can't see the drive period/no powerI've never ran into an issue where the "click of death" happened at the same time as a bad adapter. Not to say that OP could have literally left this click to go on for years until the bad adapter happened.>what harm did I cause him? I cost him $8An immature take from where I stand. I'm older and the damage done isn't the $8 coming from OP. It's the damage of that one more "un-needed purchase" could have helped by not existing at all.I'm 43 so my bad if I sound like a grandpa or some shit.
>>1503211Looks interesting. I might give it a try. Thanks.>>1503221I'm sorry for disappointing (you).
>>1503221>I'm 43Ok, what the fuck does that have to do with anything? Do you have some delusion that you being older makes you wiser than everyone else or something? Fuck off, I know (You) are not the oldest poster in this thread
>>1503231I'm seriously not sure if you want me to respond to this post of fuck off.I'm going to fuck off which seems healthier for you. Good luck.
>>1503233>>1503221>>1503204>>1503195Yes, please fuck off reddit spacing faggot. You've offered nothing to this thread
>>1503236yes sir
>>1503231>>1503236lol calm down old man
>>1503186If you are still reading here, take in this>the "externals" are just "internals" with a case or adapterso if you disassemble the case with care, you'll end with a single hard disk (either 2.5/3.5 inches). So you can hook up in any computer with a sata interface.Good luck.
>>1503280I'm still popping in between sleeping and having to go to work so thanks. It looks like i'll be disassembling it in some fashion.
>>1503349the clickings does have to meanunreadable at all, it perhaps lets youbackup your data.Good luck, take care.Don't drive sleeping.
