I'm shortly getting my hands on a mint condition New 3DS XL, and I'd like to take the best care of it that I reasonably can. I'd like it to last and last without any faults or defects if possible, so one day my children who are never going to exist could inherit it as an heirloom, that sort of quality. What can I do to keep the condition great? My current 3DS XL has two scuff mark lines on the screen from where it rubs up against the other half when it's closed, a handful of dead pixels on the top screen, and the plastic above the R button is broken off. I'd like to prevent all of that shit if I can. Also for Pokemon nerds:I'm going to be using this new console almost exclusively for gen 6 and 7 Pokemon games and I'd like to get the most out of it that I can. Is there anything at all I can do with a brand 3DS specifically for the purpose to meddle with my friend safari in X&Y and ensure it's a Ditto safari? How about for making sure that any Vivillion I raise is the pattern of my choosing, even if I can only pick my fave? Thanks for any help.
>My current 3DS XL has two scuff mark lines on the screen from where it rubs up against the other half when it's closedUse a screen protector for the top screen>General careDon't have greasy hands, don't play smash and rub the circle pad off.Everything else will just deteriorate with time/use, using a console and keeping it pristine are generally two incompatible things.Though I do wonder how it happens that japanese people keep their things really pristine when reselling them.>I'm going to be using this new console almost exclusively for gen 6 and 7 Pokemon games and I'd like to get the most out of it that I can.PKSM, even if primarily geared towards cheating, is a significantly better Pokémon Bank alternative, and allows transfers from all the generation's games, including gen1/2 VC, gen3 VC injects, gen4 and 5 cartridges, and of course 6 and 7.>How about for making sure that any Vivillion I raise is the pattern of my choosing, even if I can only pick my fave?set your 3ds region before starting a save file. you can google this.
>>1554697>Use a screen protector for the top screenAny particular brand available in the UK that works?>Everything else will just deteriorate with time/use, using a console and keeping it pristine are generally two incompatible things.Shame, I was hoping there was some secret to it.>Though I do wonder how it happens that japanese people keep their things really pristine when reselling them. That's the wizardly I was hoping to learn.>set your 3ds region before starting a save file. you can google this. All right. Nothing for fucking with my settings or whatever to reset or alter my friend safari though?
>>1554713>Nothing for fucking with my settings or whatever to reset or alter my friend safari though?I'm not sure what determines the friend safari. I think it might be the friend code, and I have no idea how to alter that except for factory resetting the console. Maybe there's a calculator somewhere to convert friend code into safari type, and you can factory reset it a bunch of times to get a good one. I'm also not sure if you can get a friend code at all without nintendo's servers being online, or using pretendo.
>>1554775 (Me)Small research, most interesting result being the final post in this thread: https://projectpokemon.org/home/forums/topic/52340-friend-safari-calculator-for-xy/It seems to imply you get a random new friend safari on every reset of the game, but good luck checking it in-game. It links a tool to calculate it and a cheat to spoof all unique safaris in your game. You might be able to figure out and edit your safari in PKHeX or PKSM.
>>1554713>Any particular brand available in the UK that works? No idea, just look for an appropriately sized one, they all will work and if you get a plastic one (instead of tempered glass) you can cut it to size. Other than the size, screen protectors are a lottery, some are too glossy, some are too faded/discolored, some will polarize the light and make viewing with certain sunglasses impossible, etc. I've never been able to get any sort of consistency in buying screen protectors even for phones.

>>1554692If not mentioned buy a carrying case for it. I keep all my handhelds in carrying cases when I'm not using them. Learn how to do simple repairs on the one in rough shape. This way the one in rough shape becomes your main handheld and you use the one in good shape a lot less often. I think the cheapest place to buy replacement parts might still be Aliexpress. Its been a while I buy repair parts from there.
jailbreak it asap and then dump your carts because they will rust eventually (if they haven't already) also keep an sd card in the slot because it stops the contacts from rusting. As long as your sd card slot works it doesn't matter if the cart slot goes to shit (which they are known to do).
>>1554781If you scroll down that page there's pretty exact instructions, and I'm not sure what to add to those. It assumes your 3DS is modded with Luma, which I kind of expected you to do anyway, as there's literally no drawbacks.Let me know if you get stuck with anything, I can maybe give you a tip.
Okay, I'm back to the thread with a question.>>1554783>>1554791I've bought a replacement back and faceplate for my 3DS as the originals are very worn down, I want to replacement them and then add some tempered glass to the screen and a protective clear plastic shell around everything to keep it lasting a long time, but I'm stuck trying to do it.I loosened the two screws holding the old backplate on and got it off with a spludger, but I can't remove the screws from the old backplate in order to put them on the new blackplate. There's some sort of a very firmly attached metal washer preventing their removal and I've no idea how to deal with that.I don't even know how to remove the top faceplate.
>>1555144Can you provide a picture?
>>1555171Of what, the metal washer thing holding the screw in place?

>>1555186Well yeah, it's 12 years old and has seen many thousands of hours of use. I am going to be wiping down all the main parts with isopropranolol acohol and get in as many cracks as I can, though I see no reason to clean off the old plates that I'll have no use for.
>>1555175>metal washer thingTake a pair of pliers and gently grab the washer. Probably easiest to grab across the gap, don't press the gap together making the tension higher. Whilst grabbed, simply unscrew the screw >>1555188>going to be wiping down all the main parts with isopropranolol acohol and get in as many cracks as I canBefore you rub chemicals on it, use a dry old toothbrush and brushie off what you can. Then use a soft clean cloth slightly damp with water for a bit more cleaning. When that's done consider if you need solvents for further cleaning
>>1555190I now have an extremely shiny and new looking 3DS, with a better protected screen. It was a pain in the ass and basically took me two hours to fumble through, not least of all because I don't have needle nose pliers, but it's done now and the new one I'm getting won't require nearly so much work done to it.The toothbrush tip was a great call btw, thanks.
Wouldn't the batteries be trash by now?
>>15552851) No2) They're replaceable
>>1554692It's funny because I just recently started playing games on my 2DSXL again, which is in very good condition and I was thinking the same thing. One thing I realized that the buttons and plastic would wear down from the oils on my skin, so I started wearing nitrile gloves while playing it (I imagine if I told someone this they would think I'm insane). But the fact of the matter is that it's probably near impossible to replace all the buttons on the thing even if you could somehow get your hands on replacements so that's the one thing I'm weary of.The battery of course is the other thing, if you let it go too long it will balloon out and explode your case (my switch is already doing this), but it looks like replacement batteries are pretty commonplace and the procedure isn't too bad.
