>>18091278The Fragance Flowchart for Beginners
shit, someone beat me to a Nicolai OP(one of the worst frag pics on her website btw)>>18091279>>18091280based as always>SOTD: Rogue Derviche (I)
>tried multiple different designer's private lines (armani privè, gucci alchemist's garden, chanel les exclusifs)>nothing discernibly higher quality than normal designer fragsWhy do so many people fall for the price tag meme? There seems to be a direct correlation up until about $1/ml (because there's a lot of ultra shitters if you go below that) but beyond that range there's basically no correlation. Btw I feel the same about niche or masstige frags, but I just chose designer private lines because they literally offer their own cheaper lines with the same "level" of perfumery.
>>18091293>Why do so many people fall for the price tag meme?because people are retarded same with everything else
>>18091293because marketing is everything when it comes to, well, everything, and nothing says prestige like a higher price tag.
>>18091293Nobody wants to be known as the guy who wears a $10 fragrance, simple as.
>>18091295>>18091303>>18091305Fair nuff, but at least with other luxury items there is a very obvious and immediate "show off" element. A Gucci shirt says "Gucci" in big gaudy bold letters, signalling to poorfags around you "HEY I BOUGHT A $500 SHIRT". A Mercedes S Class has a very obvious Mercedes Benz badge on the front and back, signalling to poordrivers around you "HEY I BOUGHT A 6-FIGURE CAR!!"But with fragrances, unless you carry the bottle around with you (and even then, most people won't recognize it), nobody knows "waow, that guy's wearing a $450 fragrance!!!"
>>18091311you don’t get it. the price tag isn’t necessarily about showing off to other people, it’s a form of self-assurance that you have the right/best thing. it’s like buying the name brand of soap/deodorant/ice cream at walmart instead of the generic equivalent that’s cheaper (which is, by the way, not an endorsement of arab clones).
>>18091293>nothing discernibly higher quality than normal designer fragsbecause you're a noselet
>>18091311>But with fragrances, unless you carry the bottle around with you (and even then, most people won't recognize it), nobody knows "waow, that guy's wearing a $450 fragrance!!!"most people don't recognize most luxury items anyway. cars and maaaaybe big logo shit are the exception, not the rule. most people aren't going to to recognize your Cartier watch or whateverbut I agree perfumes are especially egregious. though Aventus and BR540 exist for the ones who want recognizability for maximum flex potential
>>18091311Most people know what high end designer fragrances smell like, anon. I think anyone who is even remotely conscious of fragrances can recognize Creed or Tom Ford and if they can't then they'll be hearing plenty about it soon enough.
Any recs for a smoky rose? Something that isn't too rose forward, but is flanked by incense or heavy woods?
I smelled a lot of CDG blackpepper on the trains in tokyo.Maybe 4 sprays of Fuel for life was a turn off when I was drunkenly hitting on girls in Hub wwww
>>18091319you’re crazy if you think most people are “conscious of fragrance”. most people don’t even wear fragrance.
After seeing the shilling on here, I got a habit rouge decant to try again after not sampling it for a year or so and I really can't get down with it. I love old school masculines from vetiver to chanel pour monsieur to kouros, but HR just smells like a so dandified and like my grandmas divorced brother, Super dusty lemon, candied sweetness, and vanilla. Its not disgusting or anything, but I can't get down with it. It reminds me a lot of egoiste, which I like slighter more. Maybe its the rosewood? Or maybe I just smelled both on an older person in my youth>>18091321The Bulgari The Noir frag for sure. Smells like a rounder GGA with a slight tea/smoke and rose. The leather can become nauseating though
>>18091319Aventus or certain Tom Fords yeah probably, since those are commonly sampled in malls. But the lines I listed, or something from MDCI, Initio, Guerlain, etc definitely not unless they're intro fragrances. >>18091314This is b8.
>>18091313how will Israel getting their shit pushed in by sandniggers affect the lone market?
>>18091333probably not at all, arab clones aren’t exactly made by palestine or syria or whatever country is currently at ware with israel (are the rich countries like the saudis/UAE/kuwait involved? idk).

All I own right now is Acqua Di Gio Profondo, which I like. I'm looking for a nice woodsy scent for the Spring/Summer. Tried Terre D'Hermes EDT which I liked, but was probably a bit too mature for me. Any reasonably priced reccs?

Does Chanel have any worthwhile fragrances?
sotd ted lapiuds pour homme 18 sprays
>>18091430Yes, Bleu de Chanel is very popular and a safe blind buy for anyone. I've also heard very good things about Sycomore. Chanel No. 5 is a classic fragrance for women.
>>18091440fuck off, chatgpt>>18091430>Pour Monsieur>Antaeus>Egoiste
>>18091430Egoiste, Antaeus, Pour Monsieur, Platinum Egoiste. I honestly like Bleu too for what it iscurrent Chanel prices suck though and I probably wouldn't buy anything from them right now.
>>18091430not really, they just have:no.5cuir de russiebois des ilesno. 22pour monsieurno. 19cristalleantaeusegoistepretty small repertoire of masterpieces if you ask me.
>>18091311First of all, the price of an expensive fragrance is cheap per the amount of fragrance you get. Since they're strong and concentrated. A bottle of axe body spray or whatever you poors wear runs out after a week so you're really spending $450/year on it anyway. Second of all, cheap fragrances are flat and don't have the complexity and depth that you get with more expensive ingredients. The price is really paying for something. I have smelled a lot of Turkish clones and they are never the same. And third, for me, I don't want to smell like a lot of other people. I will never wear a fragrance that most people can afford and most women can recognize. If you wear even a relatively common niche fragrance like Oud Satin Mood, that will be "smells like Joe" to 99% of your peers because they won't ever have smelled it before.
>>18091293Why does the existence of slightly more expensive stuff makes spergs seethe and kvetch so hard ?
>>18091449>>18091451these posts are either very good satire or very sad.
>>18091449>First of all, the price of an expensive fragrance is cheap per the amount of fragrance you get. Since they're strong and concentrated.except fragrances like Oud Wood and Aventus are notoriously much weaker than their cheap arab clones>Second of all, cheap fragrances are flat and don't have the complexity and depth that you get with more expensive ingredientsmost expensive fragrances aren't using expensive ingredients in the first place. I don't think you understand how huge the mark-up on luxury perfume isthe average modern niche perfume will actually be less complex than your average 1980s cheapie simply because of how fragrance composition has changed>And third, for me, I don't want to smell like a lot of other peopleyou can achieve that with less popular cheap fragrances too, much more so than by wearing popular luxury fragrances that have large numbers of clones and users
I'm new into this topic and something is really weird to me. As a teen I was buying some affordable stuff like Davidoff Echo or Benetton Verde Man to use all year long. Shit was staying distinctly on me for whole day long and was 1/2 or even 1/4 price of what I buy now. Current stuff projects badly, leaves no tail and stays longer only on clothing (noticeable only from really close)And I mean both fragnances released in past ~4 years and those which are on the market for years now. My mother who collects frag also sees the difference, also people on fragnantica... what's the gist? t. eurozone nibba if that matters
>>18091460>most expensive fragrances aren't using expensive ingredients in the first place. I don't think you understand how huge the mark-up on luxury perfume isYeah. With all the restrictions on what can go into a fragrance, that basically leaves only synthetics and analogs of what was at one time grown, harvested, and processed. Now every ingredient is made in a lab. You can't even use real lemons anymore for fucks sake. Supposedly a Tom Ford 50ml($300 in some places) costs ~$2 to make. Now that's a markup. It really is a joke of an industry. If you think your niche costs more to produce than a nautica you are sorely mistaken. Why do you think it was so easy for the arabs to jump on board.

>>18091493Dior is 100% better than Chanel, especially considering their prices and availability. Best designer along with Guerlain (if Guerlain counts as a designer brand).
>>18091566LMFAO, dior has taken a big fat shit on basically their entire legacy pre-80s. diorama, miss dior, dioressence are all unrecognizable in their current iterations, while diorella, eau sauvage and diorissimo are shadows of their former selves, to say nothing of eau fraiche and dior-dior no longer existing. only their post-roudnitska catalog is maintained with any sort of decency, which is like an orchestra only playing music after beethoven competently (ie. absurd and sacrilegious). dior can go to hell for the mess they’ve made out of their back catalog, and for being the reason patou no longer exists.
Let's be honest /b/, Maison Francis Kurkdjian mogs every other perfumer nowadays. I can't wait for his next creation for Dior which presumably will be even stronger than Dior Sauvage Elixir
>>18091575very funny
Honestly from the big designer brands, Prada makes the best perfumes
>>18091559>Comes back with the most common poorfag tropeKeep flipping those burgers
>>18091571Anon, Dior Sauvage is the most popular current Men's fragrance. It is fine if you don't like it, but don't pretend that literally millions and millions of people think it is the best fragrance. Don't fall into the hipster trap where you reflexively hate things because they are popular. A hobby like this can encourage that sort of mindset.
>>18091581No one likes sauvage. No one buys sauvage. No one has ever worn sauvage
>>18091571I currently own Fahrenheit, DHO, DHC, and Eau Sauvage and they're all fine. Chanel prices make me want to avoid all their fragrances.

By a lot. It's really bad, but you asked for strong, not good.
>>18091771I picked up my bottle of red tobacco by the neck once and didn't realize the atomizer came lose and I spilled some on a basket of laundry I was about to wash, and I couldn't get the scent out. >>18091792Ehh, nevermind, I now saw the original question and it was about designer frags. This one certainly isn’t one, so on that front Red Tobacco still wins.

>>18091917simple answer: you suck at all 4, and the amount of time and effort it would take to become good at any of them is not just a hobby, it’s a full time career that starts with years of schooling and then grinding for several more years as a journeyman before achieving some level of mastery.
>>18091920yeah the difference became more apparent to me the longer after spray. I think they both just had Citrusy top notes so those were strong in the beginning. I like both, but the longer I wear them I like the creaminess of heritage more than vetiver.

>>18091944the last thing we need is more subpar creations of anything by amateurs, we already have plenty of those floating around.

>>18092052Based for giving /ourgirl/ curly a fair hearing.
>>18092023I can find something redeeming about every fragrance for the most part. The only one I can think of off the top of my head that I was like, HOLY SHIT, WHY DO THEY MAKE SOMETHING SO HIDEOUS was one of the older PDM releases. I don't remember what it was called, but I was at the PDM boutique in NYC and the guy was taking me through all the fragrances and when he got to this one he was like "yeah, this one is terrible and I have never sold a bottle in the three years I've worked here". It was one of the ones in the clear bottle, but it straight up smelled like nail polish remover. I have no clue what the fuck they were going for, but they missed the mark. By a lot.
Can someone compare the benefits and drawbacks of Solid Frangrances vs Liquid
>>18092181The primary benefit of liquid fragrance is that you can spray it on yourself without anyone seeing it. The primary benefit of solid fragrance doesn't exist and that's why no one knows what that even is.
>>18092201No, I refuse to believe that solid fragrances are that niche. Solid Colognes/Perfumes just smell better to me and are less powerful, I don't understand why they haven't gained more traction.
So just trying Habit Rouge EDT and Tom Ford Ombre Leather Parfum. Habit Rouge's floral notes are fairly prominent. It reminds of Grey Flannel with several extra notes added. Tom Ford Ombre Leather iParfum is pretty nice. It had a nice soft and warm leather scent but then with a lot of extra complexity in the beginning. However I will say even after just 15 minutes after spray a lot of the complexity is fading. If it is just left with the leather note, which is nice, after an hour or so I'm not sure it is worth the hefty price tag.
Never really cared about fragrances but I have some airline points to spend. Problem is their offerings are very limited so there were only two high profile ones I can cop for nothing - pic related.Do these have good enough staying power and decent reception?
>>18092220>solid >less powerful than perfume Soap. It sounds like you are describing soap.
When I say I want to smell like vanilla I mean I want to smell like vanilla ice cream tastes, not like spicy nonsense, understand?
>>18092226Also something about Habit Rouge reminds me a little of a Mexican restaurant. Like the background scent of maize either corn tortillas or that sweet corn thing.
>>18092226>However I will say even after just 15 minutes after spray a lot of the complexity is fading. If it is just left with the leather note, which is nice, after an hour or so I'm not sure it is worth the hefty price tag.I feel this way about a lot of Tom Fords. Habit Rouge is nice for the price, if a bit dated. Although it seems to be harder and harder to find for under a hundred dollars these days. I would go with HR Rouge Prive over that one. It's a bit more modern but retains the HR DNA much more than HR L'Instinct, which may as well be a new release. Honestly, if you're new to fragrance and just looking for something that smells nice and is easy to wear, I would look into the L'Homme Ideal line sooner than the more legacy Guerlain fragrances. Not knocking them, but they're a bit hard to pull off in my opinion. Ideal is much less complex, but it's a DNA that most people will enjoy. And they are about 50/50 warm weather, cool weather, so there will be something in the line that's suitable for any occasion. >>18092250I'm sure there is a Demeter fragrance for that. I've also heard Vanilla Vibes from Juliette Has a Gun is vaguely ice-creamy, but I don't know. That's for girls, anon. Girls. I'm a man.
>>18091534Both Fahrenheit and Lonestar Memories are good suggestions, unfortunately if you think Fahrenheit is too heavy Lonestar is probably gonna come off the same. To me it’s even heavier than Fahrenheit, but I don’t consider either of the two “heavy”.Another you could look into is Iron Duke, fantastic leather fragrance that fits the cowboy description pretty well. Similar in the vein of Lonestar.
>>18092254Well of the samples I got, I also got Vetiver EDT and Heritage. Of all 4 I think I like the Heritage the most. It also seems the most versatile too me. I think what I like about it is the creaminess underneath it all.
TF Tobacco Oud Intense decants are really expensive, are any clones of it like Dua Tobac Aoud Attar good?
>>18092254>I'm sure there is a Demeter fragrance for thatThere sure is! >>18092250In addition to the aforementioned Demeter, A Whiff of Waffle Cone by Imaginary Authors, Changing Constance by Phenalgin's, and Incubi by Andromeda's Curse fit the bill. Anon mentioned Vanilla Vibes, but I think that one kind of smells like suntan lotion. It's very salty. Also, so you're not surprised, most fragrances that smell like this are women's fragrances. Parfums de Marly is probably the house that's most associated with masculine vanilla fragrances, I'm not familiar with anything from that house that smells like vanilla ice cream. Pegasus might work, but there's a lot going on in that one other than the vanilla. Vanilla by itself is not traditionally thought of as an overly masculine note, and so when used in men's fragrances it's pretty much always blended with something that makes it a bit darker or spicier. Don't get me wrong, a lot of aggressively masculine fragrances feature vanilla quite prominently, Aventus and Sauvage EDP both have heavy doses of vanilla and those are both very masculine, but no one would ever describe them as smelling like ice cream.PDM Althair might work. I haven't smelled that one yet, but it sounds very, very sweet.

I'm not very experienced with fragrances so I decided to order a set of samples of more popular scents. For now I'm looking for an everyday scent for summer, something not overtly powerful. I've tested pour homme versace and I liked it (especially the subtle rosy note) but I'm looking for something with better longevity maybe? So I got to try Tom Ford's Ombre Leather Parfum again this morning. It smells so good in the beginning. It is rich and complex, and has notes that just reach the top without going over. It is one of the best things I've smelled. But then like 15 minutes later so much of that goes away. It still has a very a nice, soft leathery smell afterwards but it loses so much so quickly I feel like it isn't worth the price tag. Plus the foreknowledge of knowing the wonderfulness of the scent is going to go away so quickly makes the fragrance feel tragic. However, my other samples of Guerlain Vetiver EDT and Heritage I really like. I will probably wind up ordering the Heritage. I do like that one more but I feel the Vetiver is a better spring and summer fragrance. Plus I think the Vetiver would better fill a hole in my collection. But I want to try the new Vetiver Parfum before I decided between the EDT and the Parfum.

>>18093004Never have, but it’s doubtful. You have to keep in mind, they’re giving you samples because they want you to try something and eventually purchase it. There are specific things they want you to purchase, and they don’t care what you actually want to try.
Where do you guys fall on clones? It seems like there are three camps:>1. Never purchasing a clone on pure principle>2. Most clones are garbage but there are a few scenarios where it makes sense >3. Well I ordered a bottle of Heritage from Guerlain. I really liked the sample I tested. I was mildly disappointed that I couldn't choose 3 samples of any fragrance I wished. I wanted to try the Vetiver Parfum, Jicky, and Mitsouko. I wound up getting samples of L'Homme Ideal Parfum, Habit Rouge Parfum, and Floralbloom Forte EDP. I'm somewhat interested in the first two, and the third I just picked up for my niece to see if she likes it. I chose the least expensive feminine fragrance they had listed in case my niece really likes it she will only be begging her parents to spend a bit over $100 rather than $300 or $400.
>>18093027Absolutely 2. I think that shunning clones completely is dumb, because some of them genuinely have a great price/performance ratio, but let’s be honest, most of them go into the ”tries to capture the vibe but fumbles hard on execution” category. And I personally keep paying enough attention to details that I don’t wanna deal with fragrances that are like>yeah man the drydown is like 80% same if you survive the first hour of synthetic chemical smellI’d generally rather have your average unambitious but OK designer fragrance than anything that has an actively abrasive notes on any part of its existence. Doesn’t matter if it almost captures the idea of some expensive fragrance with its sillage, if there is any unpleasantness I have to survive, it’s off my list.
>>18093057why from the source?
>>180930272. While few, there are some fantastic clones that I honestly prefer over the original. I can't bring myself to spend $200+ on certain frags that lasts half as long as a $40 clone when the smell is barely distinguishable.
>>18093055Probably a pretty safe (read: correct) take. It’s probably gonna be ELDO 2: Animal Edition.A couple good ones, several meh ‘not bad’s, and a few real flops that somehow stick around.

>>180930271>>18093057Yeah, see, Jicky and Mitsouko are waaaay too old for them to be giving out samples. >>18093124All of them. They're limited edition. Pop them in a dresser, wait a couple years and sell them for $1,000 a pop to nerds. It's the whole reason they exist in the first place.
>>18093124Gryffindor is the only one that smells right. It's a bold ambery scent profile. Hufflepuff is a light tropical thing, Slytherin is warm and cozy, and Ravenclaw sounds like a generic blue scent. It's like the perfumer just looked at the colors and went with the first thing that came to mind. They didn't even bother to take two minutes to read the wikipedia. Hufflepuff should be a sweet, cozy gourmand. Slytherin should be dark, damp and earthy like Encre Noire. Ravenclaw should be something sexless and academic along the lines of Green Irish Tweed. Something a tenured college professor might wear. Gryffindor is fine I guess.
>>18093124Funnily enough I’ve never seen anyone discuss that company on positive sense in fragrance community, nobody ever recommends anything from them or talks about the practical matters about notes or anything, it’s always just strongly negative condemnation of the entire company. And from what I’ve seen, they probably deserve it with their pricing, riding on brand cooperations, kitschy bottles, limited edition dumbassery etc., but still - what keeps them afloat if you never see anyone in fragrance community discussing them? Do they live solely on non-enthusiast sales and/or popular culture brand X fanboys/girls gobbling up fragrances solely because the brand association?
>>18093124so gryffindor is for courageous heroic leader types, ravenclaw is for nerds, hufflepuff is for pussies, and slytherin is for assholes?
>>18093133I've been moderately into fragrances for like a decade, and the only thing I really know about this brand is that they have bottles that look like cupcakes and Redolessence has a bunch of them on his shelf. Never read or watched a single review until twenty minutes ago when I found out they made expensive Harry Potter fragrances for some reason.
>>18093135That is correct
>>18093061I wasn't really worried about authenticity but I figured if I get it straight from Guerlain then there might be less risk for quality control, as in a discounter may have the bottle but there is a chance it has sit in a 120 degree shipping container for a month or two. Also I wanted to sample more Guerlain fragrances. I didn't get the ones I wanted but I was still ok to try out 2 of them and the 3rd I can give as a small gift to my niece.
>>18093138damn imagine the sorting wizard hat doesn’t put you in the main character house… that sucks
>>18093132I think the idea is that they want them to be different enough that you can buy all four without any major redundancies. Which is stupid. No one who cares about fragrances enough to avoid redundancy is going to buy one, let alone all, of these.
>>18093081>Yeah, see, Jicky and Mitsouko are waaaay too old for them to be giving out samples.are they worth blind buys? Also I see they are listed under women's fragrances but I assume that is because when they were released fragrances were less unisex friendly.
>>18093124They also made a Batman scent at one point.
>>18093144 you are definitely better off sampling them
>>18093145Yeah, it's a $400 women's fragrance. I don't understand who is running this companyhttps://houseofsillage.com/products/batman-core-womens-fragrance-limited-edition
>>18093146alright, perhaps I will put together a list for next month. I don't really want to rush buy a bunch of fragrances anyway, And I did want to try out the Vetiver Parfum and decide between that and the EDT.
>>18093147They made a men's fragrance, too. But I guess they don't sell it anymore. The boy bottles are square. The cupcake bottles are all women's if I'm not mistaken.
>>18093147women always buy gaudy shit like that it is why lady gaga and ariana grande can sell out at sephora in an hour… batman is for the “goth chicks” who are usually just your average tasteless hoenot saying men will never buy a celeb frag but it is way less common
>>18093151>not saying men will never buy a celeb frag but it is way less commonI would never buy a celebrity fragrance, even if I liked the celebrity. Even just having a famous face of a fragrance is enough to give me pause. Nick Jonas by John Varvatos could be the best fragrance of all time, I don't care. Not buying that shit.
>>18093151Yes, this is also basically the target demographic for the Harry Potter line. They also make an expenisve Wednesday fragrance, so that should tell you all you need to know about that.
>>18093144I pretty much always recommend sampling, even with mass appealing stuff. And yes, hit the nail on the head, they were “feminine” when they were released, but with the changing of time and preferences a guy could easily wear them, just don’t be surprised if you get weird looks if sampling them in public.
Asking a woman what frag she wears and hearing “Batman” is kinda cute and endearing. Asking a man and hearing “Batman” is kinda pathetic.
>>18093159>Ah I’m glad you asked. This is Batman Returns Pour Homme
>>18093159On the surface, yes, but it’s really just perception. If the chick is fat and nerdy (unattractive) it’s still gonna come off as weird. If the guy is 6’3 with a 6 pack, he’s “genuine” “doesn’t care what others think” and has “is his own person”.
>>18093159It would only be cute and endearing if the woman looked sheepish and embarrassed when she answered. Otherwise it would come off a bit too autistic to be cute. I agree that it would sound pathetic on most guys unless they are a certain eccentric flair already. For example I could see it working on this guy.
Question for the thread:My entire life I have associated the word “musky” with sweat and body odor, basically “unclean”. But I’m slowly beginning to learn that when it comes to perfume musk means lightly sweet, powdery, and possibly even clean. Is this correct, and am I the only one who had this perception?
>>18093144jicky was and always has been a unisex perfume, guerlain lists it as a feminine mostly out of laziness and convenience. the real redpill is that all of guerlain’s creations have really always been unisex regardless of how they were marketed. plenty of women have worn vetiver and habit rouge, and plenty of men have worn mitsouko and l’heure bleue. marketing shouldn’t stop you from wearing any of them.
>>18093160I look like this and wear this and say this
I fucking hate "fragcom" so much. It used to be a fun hobby and people were easy to talk to. Now everybody is a huge cunt. I hope they all die.
>>18093207She unironically seems non-judgmental and a true enthusiast. I think it is because she has a touch of the tism.
>>18093172I've usually heard "musty" interchangeably with "musky", but usually there is a more negative connotation on the former. But it's not incorrect. Musk is a innately animalic scent, and serves the same function in animals as BO does in humans. There was a time when everyone smelled like BO all the time and presumably people didn't care all that much. But now we bathe and find that smell gross. As far as musk in perfumery goes, like oud, rose, ambergris, civet, and castoreum, when you smell all of these things in nature (with the exception of rose, which doesn't smell bad until you start to concentrate it) all of theme can smell good when used in small quantities, but fucking revolting and gross when you smell a lot of it at once. Fresh ambergris smells like salty feces. But dry it out and get it in the right quantity and it smells like musky tobacco kind of smell. It's sweet. Musks and deeper animalic scents all serve as fixatives because they are long lasting and can help enhances other oils/aromachemicals.
>>18093215>scents also serve as fixatives*
>>18093213I mostly meant the people in the community more so than the youtubers. >>18093222There's a lot of insecurity in fragcom. Always has been, but people are also just shittier across the board these days. But, as far as fragrcom specifically is concerned, it usually goes something like this >Person wears whatever their parents wore/bought them, maybe something they found a drugstore >Person decides to branch out and splurge on something nicer >Maybe walks into Sephora or Macy's and smells a Bleu de Sauvage thing and buys it on the spot because they are appealing to 95% of the entire human race >Goes home and is happy with their purchase>Wants to see if other people also like the same thing>Finds out that everyone in fragcom says Bleu de Sauvage is disgusting and wouldn't spray it on their worst enemy's abortion >Gets really self conscious and orders a bunch of other samples that are fragcom approved >Finds something they kind of like, but they also kind of like five other samples >Can only afford one >Make a selection and feel a bit of buyer's remorse, wondering what could have been>Tries to stamp out this cognitive dissonance by convincing themself that only their choice is good, and all the other choices smell like butt cheese >Goes online and fiercely defends their own decision as intensely as if they were the creative director of whatever house they bought from

>>18093215Appreciate the response, and the depth of it at that, but it only partially answers my question. I understand scent perception changes depending on concentration, but it’s just so odd that in general conversation if you describe something as “musky” it is a given it smells bad, but in perfume reference it smells ‘light powder sweet’. I guess I’m looking to confirm that description is correct? That describing a fragrance as musky means (roughly) light powdery sweet, where as describing a homeless person as musky would be a humorously polite way of saying they smell bad (body odor). Also, in my experience musty and musky are not at all interchangeable, but this may be a regional thing. Musky is strictly applied to animals / humans. Musty applies to the scent of mold or mildew, things that are slightly damp, like a basement.
>>18093276The way you were using the word is wrong. Musk: from the musk deer smells like sweet sweat. Must: smells damp or like old wet towels on the bathroom floor. When someone said a homeless person was musky they probably meant musty. North America, btw
>>18093276>>18093297Also, check out a musk deer's teeth, pretty interesting
>>18093297Yeah I associate musty with mildew. I kind did assume musk was more sweaty smell sort of thing. I was aware there was actual musk and musk glands on some animals but I still though sweat.
>>18093308>but I still though sweatThen you were correct, but the sweet and pleasant variety. Think of how a lover smells. That is what it is attempting to emulate
>>18093276>I understand scent perception changes depending on concentration, but it’s just so odd that in general conversation if you describe something as “musky” it is a given it smells bad, but in perfume reference it smells ‘light powder sweet’.Technically "musk" only actually refers to the substance secreted by the male musk deer. Humans don't secrete "musk", and neither does any other animal apart from the musk deer. My guess would be that people started using it euphemistically as a polite way to refer to body odor, given that sweat is secreted from glands in human beans much in the same way musk is secreted from the musk deer. People were pretty squeamish about bodily functions, historically speaking. It was probably easier to tell someone they smelled a bit musky than to just directly tell them they had BO and should go take a bath.
>>18093338There's a musk duck as well
>>18093338what was coming from Civet's glands then?
>>18093338>>18093316>>18093308>>18093276fun fact: particularly musk heavy fragrances can smell like BO under a variety of circumstances. The actual scent profile is not far off, although when used correctly , you'd never notice. If left to mature long enough, musky fragrances can take on this quality as the base notes become stronger due to oxidation. But you can also artificially induce this property by smelling a musk-heavy scent after smelling fragrances with similar notes to the musky fragrance, but do not contain musk (or sometimes contain a different kind of musk). This actually happens if you smell Aventus after wearing clones of Aventus like CDNI. OG Aventus is built around a specific captive musk compound that Olivier Creed obtained from another company, and that only Creed can use. It's the most powerful ingredient in the composition by far, and none of the clones contain it. The Aventus DNA (and this would include the clones) is also notorious for triggering olfactory fatigue extremely quickly, so if you spray a bunch of CDNI, sniff it until you can't smell anything, then immediately smell Aventus, the only thing you can smell is that powerful musk note and it smells very sweaty. Not full on B.O. smell, but very close.
>>18093347It's been called "civet musk" but it's not the same thing. It's usually referred to as civet oil in perfumery. It's a matter of semantics though, they're the same concept. Same with Castoreum
>>18093354That's pretty interesting. Thanks for the post
