I have updated the Doll QnA with the requested information:

- Created a section on stain treatment and prevention
- Added 3kaku4kakuu to the Faceup Artist Directory
- Added a section with links on basic doll care for vinyl and resin
- Added a cock.li contact in case something catches fire and I need to be reached.

Thank you for your continued suggestions and support.

I took this resolution that by the time I'd get the doll I'd quit to smoke and I tapered off. Now I've been without ciggies for 1 week, all for the sake of doll. I'm not enduring too well and to say I'm on a short fuse is an understatement. I think nicotine was the only effective barrier I had against stress and depression. I'm pretty impressed that I am managing this in the first place. Thanks dolly... please get here ASAP before I cave in and destroy the whole city Godzilla style
>>
>>46717833
>I think nicotine was the only effective barrier I had against stress and depression.
It's only been a week (which is a tremendous feat on your part), but in terms of your body that isn't enough time to reach a new equilibrium. What I'm saying is that you shouldn't draw conclusions just yet, especially one like that. I imagine it could easily convince you that quitting isn't worth it when it is, so stay strong and keep it up. It'll get easier. Are you employing any strategies to help yourself in the endeavor?
>>
>>46717990
Note that I had already quit in the past, and it was way easier (I decided I'd quit, threw my current pack in the trash, stopped for 10 years). I don't know what the hell they do with cigarettes today but they're insanely more addictive. I had never felt this insane compulsion to smoke before even though I always was a heavy smoker. I have done some research and apparently tobacco companies are bound by legal standards on the amount of nicotine, but over the years they maximized how much of that nicotine you inhale with every drag so it's like crack cocaine now. Do NOT start to smoke in this godforsaken era, it's like fighting magical mind control I swear to God.
>Are you employing any strategies to help yourself in the endeavor?
Honestly it's just thinking about the resolution. I am not supposed to have quit already, and it's good enough that I had tapered to 1 pack every 3-4 days, but by the time I get the doll I want to be completely tobacco-free.
>>
>>46716468
not really and yeah that's what I've heard, so I'm doing a small test first

>>46718261
>maximized how much of that nicotine you inhale
and yet it's still less than smoking a pipe
>>
>>46716468
>>46718354
alright that was quick
the answer is no don't use it on TF bodies, at least the first gen that are coated hard plastic
stain is removed but causes blistering of the coating
testing a less chemically-intensive method now
>>
>>46718354
In my experience pipe smoking is not addictive at all. You don't inhale the smoke either so it doesn't give you the same nicotine hit from getting in your lungs.
Either way smoking stinks and it's expensive. When I think about all the doll socks I could buy with ciggy money, my resolve is renewed.
I don't smoke indoors and always wash my hands before I touch things I care about, but you do get cigarette taint on your fingers and I don't want any of that to rub off on dolly. It's just another excuse to quit though.
>>
>>46718592
>You don't inhale the smoke either

that's cigars you're thinking of
or you've just been doing pipes wrong
>>
>>46718603
uh anon... no... you are absolutely not supposed to inhale pipe smoke, they are exactly like cigars
>>
>>46718698
>>46718603
no, they are very very different
both are generally aspirated with the mouth, instead of lungs like cigarettes are
but the burn characteristics are completely different
pipe smoke can be inhaled as part of smoking, but very few cigars can be due to how irritating the combustion products are on the more sensitive bits of the respiratory system
(source: have had extensive experience with both over the last ~20 years)
>>
>>46717990
My mother quit smoking 25 years ago and still gets the urge to have a cig. Took her a few tries even with the patch.
>>
Since we've been talking a lot about stain removal, I'll continue the train.

Does anyone have any experience removing staining from a face? I don't want to risk damaging the faceup so I'm willing to live with some minor discoloration, but is it possible to do risk free?
>>
>>46719022
Almost everything involving the head is inherently risky in my opinion

The first week is the hardest. Every subsequent week it'll get just a bit easier to bear. The urge might never fully leave you, but you will be able to get a handle on it. And your body will thank you for it just as much as your doll will. Maybe if you have the opportunity, you can seek alternative measures to deal with the struggles you face, too. You're being very brave to give up something that soothes you in pursuit of the life you want to lead, anon. I'm just a literal-who on a siamese fighting fish forum, but I'm proud of you.

This is off-topic but there's this video of a Japanese potter that I love so much
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybb-HhSrtxA
I love Japanese artisans. The teapots aren't even that expensive, I think they were like 250 or 300 for something insanely pleasant to look at. Seriously this Japanese pottery looks mesmerizing
>>
Somewhere I have a video about literal Japanese basket weaving. Artisan lives next to a bamboo grove and explains the entire process from cutting the bamboo stalk to drying it, working it into strips and finally making absurdly nice traditional basket weaving, I was in love with traditional Japanese basket weaving by the end of it
>>
Not the same video but it was similar. This artisan makes briefcases, the one I had watched made these insanely beautiful artistic baskets. Worth watching though.

I have a Blythe, at first I was put off by the images but I've fallen in love with how they look in person. They have a really comfortable weight, the eye system is fun, and they look rather adorable on the shelf. The soft hair and large head, heavy head also makes them rather nice to hug.

I however bought one from Aliexpress for like 20 bucks. I refuse to pay Takara that much especially with how limited the original body is. The knockoff one came with a ton of articulation, alternate hands and a whole extra set of head plates to customize or to serve as spare parts.

just an fyi if you by on mercari japan or yahoo auctions you could get secondhand blythes for like $50-100 before shipping instead of a fake one. you could also get a secondhand Azone doll, which most people like switching out Blythe bodies for, for even cheaper
>>
>>46739163
Is there a noticeable quality difference? I often prefer bootlegs for having roughly the same quality without paying for the brand, when it comes to large companies like these I don't feel bad about it at all.

Even 50 bucks second hand, I'd have to pay a reseller to buy it for me and send it with a low declared cost, I'd rather buy a Pullip if I'm spending that much.
>>
>>46735613
No I couldn't, I'd fail miserably on that small of a scale...
I know someone here said they wanted to make teacups or something of the sort for their doll though, patiently waiting to hopefully see those!
>>46737259
It's interesting to see the cross section like that at the end, that was cool to see! For what they are they seem to fairly price them over there, I just ordered one earlier that's fully handmade by one of those officially recognized master craftsman and it was 68 USD before shipping. I feel as though that's really cheap for the time and skill involved

If you search for Genji Shimizu teapots there's a gallery of his pottery somewhere, they're works of art. Sadly all these craftmen will probably take their legacy to their graves because of industrialization and loss of tradition. I have a lot of these videos from woodcarving to dolls (the traditional kind dressed in Heian style clothes) they're all amazing.
That briefcase from the bamboo craftsman is like 3k dollars lol. But it's beautiful work.

>>46752120
I never noticed it on my skin when the wind picked up right as I sprayed sending the cloud of MSC towards my face. Spraying it directly on your skin is not something im familiar with. I would just wash with soap and water afterwards if it does contact and you feel it. Nitrile gloves, glasses (any kind), respirator is sufficient in my experience.

After looking at MFC I can't find dolls with these hair sculpts either, but their face shapes look somewhat similar to the Assault lillies. The more I look at Assault Lillies and Mimy Garden the more I'm convinced these are 1/6 dolls because the level of detail on the hair doesn't seem to exist at a scale as small as 1/12. My first thought was that these were actually pardolls from the Parfom line because of their face shapes but I can't find any evidence of dolls that actually look like this being made by them either... Either way, thanks for replying!

I've been wondering where to post things like this. I collect loosely-termed "artdolls" (articulated stuffed animals, basically, picrel) in addition to my doll hobby, and I never know where I would post them. I suppose one could make a /toy/ thread, but it's a bit of an odd fit. I do enjoy the occasional amigurumi posting from you, anon. They're very cute.

A doll general has been discussed for a while now, there's a lot of things that can be called a doll while not really qualifying for any existing generals, hell even now the doll generals we do have are across at least 2 boards and 3 threads.

I guess any of us could try. Can someone just start a thread and wing it from there? I always got the impression these are harder to make than they look.

Generally, if they are articulated, they have a wire armature inside. Some also use lockline (teddy bear) spines instead. Others use a mix of these and other things depending on the result they want to achieve!

Looks good anon, hope it takes off, though I fear I don't have anything to post there. Is it a good idea to create another niche general? I don't know, I assume making one without a focus tends to end poorly here.
>>
>>46759282
In my opinion the quality is good and the details are nicely done. Despite the number of parts, the outfit is relatively easy to put on as there are velcro. Almost all large golden areas are white lined but the small borders aren't. I don't like very much the panties but that's more subjective. The veil has a hair clip on only one side so it doesn't hold well if you move around your doll. I still think Orione is a bit pricey, though their outfits are definitely more complex and detailed than my other purchases.
Which outfits caught your eye?

I never decided my doll's name.
>>
>>46764455

I have never really visited /toy/ regularly, but the thread felt off-topic to make /here/... well, for lack of a better home in that case, I think it's alright if we occasionally see other things posted from time-to-time. It's a rare interlude in vinyl-and-resin-posting, but like a free sample, it's a pleasant surprise in the daily routine. But that's only my opinion, and others may choose to engage with the posts as they see fit.
>>
>>46764538
Black Dahlia, Stardust Witch, Marshmallow, Crimson Vampire Princess, in order from most wanted to it looks ok but I'm not sure how often I'd dress her up like that. Though part of me also thinks that any of those would require a different doll than the one I have right now from an eye and hair standpoint. Most of these require a light colored hair like a pastel color or silver.
Also the Blossom or Gardenia lingerie but I don't want to admit to myself that I'm considering those yet

What body/face would you start with to do a lalafell from ffxiv?
>>
>>46793709
Not them but I think the 1/6 Imomodolls are pretty perfect for it, a lot of the heads have elf ears and the 27-28cm (ish) height is about 1/3 scale for lalafell, with big enough heads they look appropriately scaled next to 1/3 dolls. They're also chubby like lalafell are! If you don't care about scaling the 1/4 chubby imomo body is the same shape with similar heads available. If you don't like the imomo bodies, you could use a 1/6 Tinyfox body since it's a similar chubby shape!

That's a Dollce head, type A, with custom ears. I can't see much of the body but the hands do look like MDD hands. The arms and legs look fatter than MDD limbs though so it could either be a Puyoodoll body or a bodysuit adding bulk. I think this picture is older than Mochi-Ashi, so it's probably just a modded MDD or Puyoodoll

Do any of you have experience making doll wigs with curled saran? I need some help, if possible. I bought some thinking it'd be simple enough, due to the material's good reputation, but this is hell. The curls refuse to be pressed down no matter what I do, making sewing the damn thing nigh impossible, not to mention I can barely straighten them out even with boiling water. Nothing I do works, and what seems to work, damages the hair too much like straightening it out with raw strength or consistent pressure.

What did seem to work was using 2 pieces of paper at once to make sure no hair comes in contact with any part of the sewing machine, but even that wasn't guaranteed, it still got the machine stuck several times and it's not a weak one at all. Even when I got a good run, it was too flimsy after removing a layer of paper. It doesn't seem impossible, but it's been such a massive headache I don't know if it's worth it to keep trying, I already lost a considerable amount with all the jams.

I am out of ideas, for now, I am never working with saran or curled hair again. Wonderful waste of time and money this was, guess even artificial curly hair is terrible for styling, as if mine wasn't bad enough.

Ok I need some opinions. Im going with all black eyes for her, that was a great suggestion by anon. The 2nd set of eyes came out more diamond shaped than oval which doesnt fit the molds i have, making them has been a huge pain in the ass. The extra eyes for sure will have black lining to them to mask my tool marks and shape them some. The smallest eyes protrude slightly. Should the diamond eyes also protrude slightly or sit that kinda flush/slightly recessed with a bump in the center. I dont think theyre super critical as they’ll be mostly hidden by her hair but I wanna get the eyes right before the final faceup design.
>>
>>46803022
I honestly think you're doing a great job so far, anon. It's ok whether they're flush or they protrude slightly as long as there aren't noticeable gaps between the head and where the eye sits on the inside. She's really cool so far!

Does anyone here have experience with the silicon bodies? How are they?
>>
>>46811208
They look good, are more posable, and are surprisingly toned but are very high maintenance. Some cons: heavy, fragile skin, stains easily, victim of metal skeleton fatigue, and damage accumulates over time. Any friction causes surface tears, so you have to constantly reapply baby power.
Not for me as a vinyl enjoyer as silicon bodies feel closer to scale figures where you are forced to set and forget and ignore their playability aspect.

Do we like ob11 nendolls here? Want to post mine...
>>
>>46816392
Even if they aren't 100% on-topic, in at least my opinion, they're close enough. A little variety once in a while won't kill the general. I would like to see your dolls, anon.
>>
I put dream rescue on a headcap and I guess i left it on too long because there's a tiny spot where the vinyl has sort of peeled off? It's barely noticeable but you can feel it with your finger. is this something I can buff out with sandpaper?

I've been wanting to do a whole tea session + doll photoshoot. I will post it here one of these months
>>

Bought a melamine sponge and extra fine sandpaper, we will see when they arrive. It's the headcap so if I fuck it up ah well

Take a picture with good lighting and focus to show what happened, if you could. Hard to know what you're talking about

Hi friends! I sincerely hope you're all having a good day today

is it actual vinyl, or tinyfox? either way DO NOT SAND it or use any kind of abrasives
if actual vinyl, let it sit a few days and it should settle back
unless maybe it's an MSC layer that's peeling?
by headcap I assume you mean top part of the head, not a silicone cap you'd put under a wig
if it's coated tinyfox, solution will be completely different

It's the blank headcap for DDH-28, I bought it to do my first faceup but I somehow got pen on her head and used dream rescue. Sorry this picture is the best I can get. It's very small, but it's a tiny dot where it feels slightly different from the rest of the head. It feels more rubbery/sticky I guess? It got lint stuck to it easily. I think it's lighter too.
>>
>>46819291
yes that's normal, don't touch it and it'll go away
dream rescue and similar stain removers include a penetrating chemical that provides a pathway for the stain out of the vinyl
if you try to wipe it or sand it off, it'll leave a pit in the surface once the chemical evaporates
>>
>>46819381
Ok I'll wait then, I'd need sandpaper eventually for mouth mods later on so not a waste. Do you know how long it takes to go away?

Be honest, anons. When was the last time you cleaned your doll? Washed her hair?
>>
>>46825113
Washed?
>>
>>46825281
Yes. Wigs collect and hold dust and dirt better than anything and should be washed with an appropriate shampoo periodically. It can also make the wig shine better and smell nice, depending on the shampoo.

Plus your doll deserves a spa day. Treat her well.

She has a dark and grungy aesthetic, so you can either lean into that or go against type. Kind of like naming a chihuahua Killer or naming a mastiff Princess. Rin [凜] (りん) and Ume [梅](うめ) come to mind, to me, personally. (For people with some japanese under their belt, nameinthebox.com is a really good resource for things like this.)

Not a flower, but I thought it was cute.
I tried out reducing noise along with the saturation tweaking in this pic. It's neat, but I feel it's a bit much.

Last pic for now. I've got, like, 8 more to show. So I'll drop those later.

>>46836992
yes, but most of my dolls are based on either anime or video game characters, so their names aren’t usually original

Eventually! Some come with their names when I adopt them (Luna and Dorothy,) some I think of a name for on the spot (Eris,) and some take a while to settle on a good name for them. And some still don't have names yet because I haven't thought of the right one yet... all things in time.
