>>121568699How can an instrumental album be a concept album
The act is called Beat (Performing the music of 80's King Crimson), Discipline was supposed to be a self titled debut album, but they decided it would be better for marketing purposes to resume the use of the King Crimson name. Thus, the closest possible lineup, lacking the one criterion that would make it King Crimson is Beat, the successor of Discipline. That's pretty clever, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it's a complete coincidence.
>>121570617Vibes?There was Ian Anderson's Twelve Dances With God.More folksy new age than prog, but still.

>>121570663>Discipline was supposed to be a self titled debut album, but they decided it would be better for marketing purposes to resume the use of the King Crimson nameIt's crazy how often this used to happen. 90125 was supposed to be the debut of a new band called Cinema, but after nabbing Jon Anderson the label said they might as well call themselves Yes. Seventh Star was supposed to be a Tony Iommi solo album until the label decided it should be a Black Sabbath album, same with David Gilmour and A Momentary Lapse of Reason.
>>121563932>>121564279I'll definitely check out Embryo, but would you say that album you posted is as good or better than Yeti? That's really what I'm after more than anything.
>>121571517It wasn't the label's decision with Discipline at least. And speaking of label stuff, It still baffles me how long it took for DGM to decide to actually utilize streaming services, but I guess that's what you get with a label founded by an embittered auteur paranoid about his IP rights and an audio engineer who overstated his business qualifications and had absolutely no understanding of the proper value of the internet.
>>121571715Gen Alpha will never know the absurd lengths KC fans used to go to sneak their albums onto youtube.
>>121571822Gen Alpha and Gen Z only know King Crimson because of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure anyway. It's funny to think that Fripp's hesitancy to make his music accessible almost blew a second chance to sell it to a new demographic. The first being not doing so after Kanye West's Power released. I still don't know what the fuck Kanye of all people could have possibly said to get permission to sample the song so prominently. I guess it's because Fripp wasn't terribly attached to the song and even resented its popularity for a time. I kind of wish it didn't work out like that, because it would have been really cool to see the song transform with the band over time like they did with Larks' Tongues. A Discipline era rework would probably have been the best version of the song possible.
>>121571930Fripp inexplicably waited until 2023 to sue Kanye over a sample from 2010
>>121570617>How can an instrumental album be a concept albumI'm not sure, but their bandcamp page explains what they were going for.
>>121571998That was in 2022, and it was a suit against UMG by the holder of the "Mechanical License" for the song, "Declan Colgan Music LTD" I have no clue how that actually works.
>>121570617>I need to have the concept literally explained to me in lyrics
>>121572247If your concept album requires a separate piece of media to understand it, be it a short story with the album sleeve or a writeup in some other medium or commentary given about it in some other context. That's not a concept album, it's an album which is comprised of a single suite of music like a classical piece, which is fine, admirable even. But it's not a concept album.

>>121586618What are some key musical things you want to look when making this determination?
>>121564659I decided to try to listen to ELP, but the first 2 songs I chose were mostly just acoustic guitar ballads (though both had a synth solo at the end). "Lucky man" and "from the beginning"I heard they were over the top and extravagant.Whats a song of theirs that showcases this, but isn't super long. I just wanna try out their stuff.
>>121586779It could be pretty much anything, i'm not tied to the cliches of odd time signatures and such. The simplest way to say it would be 'surprises', something that isn't predictable from what came before it. Maybe also instrumental sections that isn't just a regular solo over a regular backing - maybe i missed something in this one, but it played and came into one ear out the other without leaving much of an impression
>>121586803>Knife Edge>Hoedown>Jerusalem>Karn Evil 9 1st movement part 2
>>121586803rarely in a good way, though, they are guilty of most if not all pejorative prog cliches (capes, long drum solos, arrogance, etc).i'd say watch live footage from their peak years
>>121586846The song's "main riff" gets changed a few times, for instance after the first chorus. I think there's also key change during the bridge close to 4 minutes in, where the song's mood become much more cheerfull (that seems a little unexpected to me).In anycase, the structure of that song is definitely more complex than wasps earlier discography, which is straightforward classic metal. The earlier stuff is a lot more lowbrow (but still great): https://youtube.com/watch?v=LFTpo_fTNes
>>121586803Their most popular tracks were usually Greg Lake’s soft rock/guitar ballad stuff. The really over the top self indulgent shit is stuff like Tarkus or Brain Salad Surgery
>>121587214Does that soft ballad stuff of theirs count as prog rock?It didn’t seem as out there as moonchild from king crimson
>>121587500Both Lucky Man and From the Beginning, (And Still... but to a lesser degree) have sections where it's clear the song was composed to be a mainstream-adjacent lead in to more progressive elements. I would still count them, because the only thing that seems to be a necessary criterion for calling music prog is whether or not the musicians themselves are considered prog.
>>121587592Is the prog part of those songs just the synth solo?
>>121587703I also consider the vocals to have a distinctively closer to prog quality than most of their contemporaries, and the bass on Still... is definitely also a prog element as it puts an emphasis on technical skill and the composition as a whole is more technical than the majority of popular ballad style songs of 1973. I completely understand why someone else might exclude those songs from their particular definition of the genre, but I personally don't think a particularly strict or specific definition is constructive or even sufficient, because the only way to do that would be to split it into chronological subcategories which, again, don't have very much in common aside from the people who are making the music.
>>121587825>>121587592I just listened to "Still... You Turn Me On".I get why this one is considered prog. It seems more intricate than the other 2.

>>121590313its mom prog
>>121580193I love Cedric vocals but I can admit they are more off-putting than an acquired taste. Just listen to Omar's solo stuff
>>121590351From people I have talked to who grew up in the 80s, he was literally EVERYWHERE, like almost up there with MJ. I'm not overexaggerating so I think a lot of the hate for him comes from overexposure in the media and his quite frankly lacklustre pop career after 84-87

>>12160424521st Century Schizoid Man was one of the songs which contributed to the coalescence of what we call metal music, and was composed without the intent or knowledge that they were contributing to a nascent genre, as they were not familiar with the works of the other early pioneers and not all of the track can be called metal. I think what you're talking about is just the same natural taste for that kind of sound reemerging later. Perhaps in an effort to reclaim that sound and intensity as a more general quality all music could make use of without being cordoned into the confines of a single homogenous identity. Or I'm grasping at straws and making an excuse to speak in big words that don't mean much.
>>121604034It depends, sometimes it's very subtle and sometimes it's very noticeable. In general the clarity and separation of the instrumental tracks is higher, but there are occasionally minor guitar vamps or synth lines or backing vocals that either get turned up or buried. The most drastic change I can remember is the vocal and instrumental of Dancing With the Moonlit Knight being slightly out of sync at the beginning.

I'm always amused and fascinated just by the amount of crossover/relationships between all the uk prog bands back in the day
>>121612780>You played with Brand X at this time?>A.W. I first met Phil Collins while we were recording "Moonmadness", at Basing Street studios, Genesis were downstairs in the larger studio putting the finishing touches to "Lamb Lie Down", and I needed to borrow a drum key. So we got chatting and Phil was a very friendly guy, we met a couple more times after that, exchanged phone numbers and that sort of thing. Then Gabriel did his famous split from Genesis, and I did a major interview with Chris Welch in the Melody Maker, and the subject of Genesis came up, and he ended up using that as the headline "Andy Ward says Genesis will survive without Gabriel", which was kind of odd, you know, as if I knew! It turned out that Phil really was a strong singer, and the rest is history, as they say. But at the time it really pleased him, so the next time I saw him he was really chuffed, "Hey thanks for the name check", because it was really positive publicity at a time when they needed it.
>>121613010>Anyway, soon after he phoned me, and asked me would I like to play percussion with his jazz rock band, BRAND X, at a gig in London? I said "I'd love to", I was very excited by this, so I went along and rehearsed with them. I found them quite something to follow, not knowing the tunes, and there were a lot of time changes, very demanding. I picked up on a few things, good enough to do the gig, but I was quite nervous about it. Anyway the next day came, and it was the gig, at a place called The Nashville in London. It had a tiny little stage, with the five of us crammed on, I was set up directly behind Phil Collins on another little platform. We started playing and everything was going swimmingly well for twenty minutes or so, but during the fourth number, I was playing tambourine with my right hand, and occasionally hitting cymbals with it, and catching them with my left hand to choke the sound. I did a particularity spirited one of these and failed to catch the cymbal with my left hand, the result was the cymbal crashed directly onto Phil's left shoulder. Which I'd imagine was quite painful, It was just the most awful moment, and he gave me a very cold look that froze me to the floor. We carried on playing, but I felt pretty shaken, and was being very careful, but low and behold it happened again! This time I missed Phil but demolished half his drumkit and this time the band had to stop playing altogether while things were put right. The rest of the band thought it very funny, and made a thing of it during the announcements. I was never asked to play with them again. But they were a great band, and it was a fun evening except for those two incidents.

I grew out of my "there are thousands of better prog songs than that one" phase, this is an absolute classic
>>121598953You might be right. There are few feelings better than driving and screaming along at that part.
>>121612488This is basically a Genesis album in all but name. A few of the tracks were even written during the Trespass/Nursery Cryme era.
>>121614616I've never thought that was a Genesis album. If anything, some Trespass tracks felt like Ant songs.

This version of Hhai is so unbelievable. The amount of soul in Vander's voice is unmatchedhttps://youtu.be/M0hwS1sxbbY?si=2jjVYCY6TFHUJ5AO
>>121614184Queen wasn't prog. They were shit.
>>121614646That's because they are Ant songs.
>>121611004Funny I also listened to that yesterday. Didn't like it. The name is probably the most memorable thing about it. That and the cover resembling the one from Starless and Bible Black. This one I really likedhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdChSFgFT2QMaybe cause I grew up in South America but I'm a sucker for Spanish guitars.

>>121616976This is extremely cool, and it's not just your personal background that makes you feel like the Spanish guitar is a great fit for the genre, because it absolutely is, in an objective sense and hearing it now, I'm surprised it's so rare to hear in a prog context. Is this Iberian Spanish? or Hispano-American that just happens to be influenced by Andalusian themes?. Because if is from Spain in 1979, these guys would have had to have been on the absolute cutting edge and exceptionally confident about the very much uncertain direction of the country.

Bruford spent the entire piece in this exact pose, for the entire piece. His decision not to add any percussion was seen by the rest of the band as a crucial choice, and he received co-writing credit for the piece.
