I have been in guitar center many times. And I have had a person walk up to me one time and straight up compliment my playing. Over heard people talking around the corner saying "that was beautiful". And the last instance I was playing some melodic solo all over the neck and switched to a finger picking thing where I use all my fingers to do a continuous fast rolling pick as I cycle through chords (kind of flemenco like almost), and I heard a guy say to the person with him "is he superhuman"? It's a strange feeling when you can cause people to react that way. It feels like winning.
