How much hobby related stuff do you have to do right now before you go ahead and get even more models?

I need to finish painting 10 more tacticals and 10 assault marines, not to mention two rhinos, a predator, kratos, jetbikes, land speeder, fire raptor, HQs, etc. that I haven't even started. Need to base the entire army also. Aaaaand I ordered auxilia anyway

I like this kit. The carapace weapons will drop straight in if you just cut a couple pegs off, the hips are ball joints instead of the warhound's flat slabs so the legs are more posable, there's neat detail under the carapace gun.
The volcano cannon looks the best, but is the worst, the neutron laser is probably the best. The conversion beamer is probably the most practical but the weapon card has a bunch of mistakes. First it fails to indicate that draining and maximal fire are supposed to be on the long range profile only, like other conversion beam weapons, and it doesn't have the carapace rule like it should.
I'm certain we won't get another titanicus rulebook or some kind of event that would make some maniples that include these, so they'll only ever really replace a dog in a maniple.

I was thinking of turning the model of the month into a nullifactor consul, think it'll work? Obviously I need to swap the arms and shoulder pads out, and scrape off the inappropriate details but once that's done it should look fine, if a bit big.

>>
>>92546633
There's no "too much" for night lords, that's the whole point.
>>
>>92545472
You can do a lot of stuff with that model. I converted mine to be a Chaplain in Terminator Armor.

It is NOT a push-fit model. The shoulder pads are separate parts. The arms can easily be swapped. The only really important identifying bits that might need to be removed are the three sculpted broken swords and the crux terminatus on left shoulder and right knee.

One thing to note is that the model is angled downward a bit, like imagine someone leaning forward. I tilted mine back and had the left foot stepping on some Xeno skulls.
>>
>>92546647
Yeah, the Night Lords pre Heresy, post Heresy and ten thousand years later look pretty much identical. Some more eight pointed stars, sure, but that's it.

>I still think brutal should be handed out on weirder stuff, like destroyer pistols finally having a reason to be scary and taboo (the fire tiny nukes instead of tiny rockets)
Yeah but I don't want to make basic Destroyer bolt pistols better than the volkite serpentas they pay to upgrade to.
Besides there's the Mechanicum pistols. Brutal would make them better than Radium pistols, and Fleshbane better than a Lucifex.
Maybe Poisoned 3+ or 4+, but definitely Rad Phage.
Though I'd make Rad Phage be able to affect the whole squad rather than just 1 model that survives an unsaved wound. Would also have Rad phage only last 1 turn to compensate, and only on a failed Toughness test after suffering a wound. And Heavy units will need to test only if they suffer an unsaved wound instead. Test every time the attacker finishes its attacks for that phase, but it doesn't stack with itself, and the -1T won't count for ID.

>primarchs can't get in a duel unless it is another primarch
I'm always loathe to changing core rules, but I keep seeing situations where people Issue a challenge with their kited out character only to have some Sergeant accept the duel. So you can have Sigismund killing a low sergeant five times before he hits the ground while the rest of the unit hurries to kill the Templars, now that Sigs is busy. So a change could be:
>Type: Balance/Homebrew
>Faction: CORE
When a challenge is issued, roll off using the Challenger's Ld vs the challenged unit's highest Ld. The winner decides who gets to accept (or reject) the challenge. Models with the Chosen Warriors rule can always choose to accept the challenge themselves, regardless of the test result.
Additionally, Primarchs can ignore the Heroic Stand if they win the Ld test.
>Why
You can waste the enemy's kited out character's challenge by accepting it with a sacrificial character. With this at least there's some interaction and can even prevent that.
>>
>>92545756
Yes, because space wizard.
>>
>>92546954
I really enjoy the interactions around challenges, as they are one of the few choices you get to make in combat. Frankly, any beatstick character needs to run with an idiot to push in front of bad challenges.
>>
>>92546954
>>92547108
Also, if you want to homerule it, I think it might be better to make a rule that punishes issuing a challenge and eating shit. Something like excess wounds counting 2x for combat result.
>>
>>92546633
My personal rule of thumb is that "40K version of Thing" bitz can be *sparingly* used for characters and elite units in 30K, so long as they have no recognisably Primarishit/Cawly design elements.

Simply because yeah, you could just use loads of 40K bitz on your 30K guys, but then why not just make a 40K army? I *want* my 30K version of 40K things to look different.
>>
>>92546856
I think people really have to remember that at the end of the day we're still talking about bolt pistols. Making them too powerful or giving them a bunch of complicated rules seems daft. I'd stick with something simple like giving them Shred - it's enough to say "these aren't your Daddy's bolt pistol" without totally overshadowing volkites or introducing a bunch of extra bookkeeping.

>*something* of the legion
>destroyers can choose to increase the "pistol x" of their guns by +1 in the shooting phase in exchange for dropping the bonus attack from charging in their subsequent assault phase (NOT making their own charge disordered so they still get other charge bonuses)
Destroyers now have a niche gimmick. If they commit to the charge they take less damage because fewer enemy models to hit back after double shooting, or they can just stay away from their target and force them to gamble a 10-12" charge whilst every asshole in the unit gets 4 bolt pistol shots or 6 serpenta shots per turn before overwatch.
>>
>>92546954
I'm not a fan of this. It makes high-Ld high-lethality characters just able to blanket murder anyone they want at any time.
>>
>>92547617
Half the issue is just that twin bolt pistols really aren't representative of what the unit is meant to be. The idea of a terrible war crimes unit who... are just worse than standard veterans in pretty much every conceivable regard.
>>
>>92546856
>>92547617
>>92547815

forget about the bolt pistols entirely and bake twin serpentas into the base unit cost so they can deflagrate mortals at the units base cost.
>>
>>92548319
Still doesn't really address the war crimes bit.
I know rad grenades are supposed to do that, but it's not their primary weapon and they don't actually do much. Vets with Power Swords are more likely to kill something than destroyers with rad grenades and chainswords - it's hardly criminal.
>>
>>92548331
I guess they'd be war crimes units in legions that only very rarely employed such measures, but then you look at Night Lords or Death Guard or Iron Hands or Mechanicum and honestly destroyers feel almost like a lighter touch to dealing with a population.
>>
>>92548382

No. It bypasses the voids it doesn't blow them out. It won't trigger the Reaver's shot.
At the same time, you can try to use the bolters to blow the shields, have the reaver then shoot, then finish with a conversion beamer aimed shot. That's a legit tactic.

If the "shadowkeepers" are the custodes in black, then I think the source of inspiration is actually custodes wearing black to remind of their failure to protect him, which was then retconned because emperor good and gold good
>>
>>92549763
Shadowkeepers are the dudes that guard the super duper dangerous guys and abomination in dark cells on Terra. It's not super recent lore but it's still from their first codex.

You're thinking of the Companions that have their armor stripped bare by being close to the Emperor and the fact that, before Guilliman came back and told the Custodes to stop moping, they did wear black cloth in morning and as a reminder of their failure for the War in the Webway and the Emperor's near death.

Anon mentioned shattered legions, so I'll probably do that. Have it be a distant WS crusade vanguard trying to link back up with the main force that united with some IW from a planetary garrison who resent Perturabo more than the Imperium. That seems fun.

Yeah I might grab a bigger brush next time, I only had “small” scale brushes so maybe a medium one would be better next time. I also started from a wraithbone prime and basecoated the model with Zandri dust without realising there is a Zandri dust rattlecan…Probably would have saved me lots of time and annoyance.

Also the paint thinning shit I’m so bad at, I’m using a wet palette and I make sure to mix 1 part water with 1 part of whatever paint I’m using and it still turns out thick.

I have a lot to do before I get to have fun in general
>Assemble the 40 Solar aux riflemen that will be arriving next week
>Assemble the 9 Solar aux command dudes
>Assemble a Legate Marshal
>Assemble an Aethon Sentinel
>Paint 40 tactical marines
>Paint 2 Apothecaries
>Paint a Leviathan Dreadnought
>Paint a Sicaran Venator
>Paint a Praetor
>Paint all of the Solar Aux stuff
Once I’m done with that I can then justify buying the leftover auxila stuff I need (20 more riflemen, 2 Aethon sentinels and those veletaris sentinels when they come out) and getting 10 terminators and a siege breaker. Then once all those are painted I can finally play my first game.

Yes you can. If you throw a strong character with a weak squad into a strong squad with a mid character, you don't challenge, because this is precisely the counter.
If you can't refuse a challenge, then the person with the biggest beatstick pretty much always wins. God forbid you have to think before challenging or face some consequences for being outplayed.

You don't want a small brush, you want a big brush with a decent tip for basecoating. I normally use something like a #2 / large citadel / army painter monster brush for most basecoats.

With regards to thinning paint, make sure your paint is properly shaken. Are you using agitator balls? If not, those are probably worth using. Next, thin your paint until it's about the consistency of milk.

If you're looking to do some quick and easy weathering, I'd recommend some sponge chipping. Something like a little Thondia Brown and some Leadbelcher will really help dirty this guy up.

It would be a pretty massive penalty, but it’s only really an issue when you use a dipshit sergeant to issue a challenge to Sigismund. In terms of narrative, it represents the sergeant stepping up and getting clowned so hard the rest decides they’re good.

Strong characters should challenge middle characters. It's literally their thing. This only proves any points spent on taking duelists would be better spent on taking better units instead.

>when you use a dipshit sergeant to issue a challenge to Sigismund
Actually, "Dolorous Fighter" forces Sigismund to issue and accept challenges. Meaning every sergeant will stall him. Even if Siggy is accompanied by Chosen Warriors squads like Templars.
>Siggy + Templars vs generic TH IC & TH Command termies
>They enter combat, and Siggy calls for a duel. Accept with a sacrificial Chosen Warriors

>1. Mirror match: Power fist Centurions in Boarding shield Command squads. This is about the least disparity between Character and Unit: both are WS5 | 2W | i1 | 2+/5++ and have power fists.
No matter who the attacker issues a challenge with, a Chosen Warrior ought to accept the challenge so the IC is free to hammer away.
If the attacker does not issue a challenge, the defender will issue one with one of his Chosen Warriors, in the hopes of locking someone out of the main combat, as refusing would mean one enemy model doesn't get to attack. Said challenge is to be accepted by a regular Chosen Warrior too.
>2. Mirror Match: Hammer Praetor with regular Hammer terminators. Here the IC is noticeably stronger than the rest of the unit
If the Attacker were to issue a challenge, it should be with the sergeant, in an effort to draw the Praetor out and/or lock him out of combat. The Defender cannot refuse, so he has to take it with his own sergeant, lest he'd lose 3A.
If the Attacker doesn't issue a challenge, then the Defender would issue it with his own sarge, trying to do just the same.
In the end nobody wants to fight the other guy's sergeant...yet that's exactly what they'll end up doing, while the Praetors try to hammer the rest of terminators as fast as possible.
So it seems no Independent Character would ever want to challenge sarges. Only sarges are disposable enough to fight other trashy sergeants.

The side with the most expensive duelist IC is the side who will lose, as they just pooled points into someone whose full abilities only activate when dueling...but can also be forced to kill trash, while the other side's points went into having a better/larger unit.

Heat bending, dry fitting, and liberal use of gap filler (i use vallejo putty and milliput). I built a stormhammer and didn’t hame much trouble at all actually. Nice kit. You have track units to worry about so it might be a little more tricky, but there is not much to it. Make sure to fix mould lines, flash, and fill air bubbles as well. Just get stuck in!
>>

For resin parts that are warped, just put them boiling hot water. Carefully fish them out (not with your fingers lol) then bend them straight as they cool. If it's not quite right after cooling down, just dunk the piece back into the hot water and try again.
Can also use the hairdryer/heatgun method, but personally had more success with using hot water. Maybe because it's easier to evenly heat the entire piece of resin that way, or maybe just because it's more compatible with my particular strain of autism or something.

What if you could charge after shooting with a Rapid Fire weapon if it has a bayonet ...
>Then Tacticals would be better than Despoilers
...but the unit didn't get the +1A from charging. Like, double tap a bolter, then see if you should charge the survivors. Less attacks could mean a combat loss, but if it doesn't look like the odds would be in your favor, you can just choose to not charge.

It does sound needlessly complicated, but the purpose of a modern bayonet is that you don't have to switch between your main gun and your blade
>>
>>92556897
I dislike it, because it makes units with Relentless much less interesting.
>>
>>92556958
Are there Relentless units that get bayonets but not chainswords or power weapons, though?
>>
I'm looking for the caveat i thought was there which states that a unit/model equipped with a jump pack cannot use a transport which is not also a flyer
Does it not exist?
>>
>>92556897
In certain cases I think it might benefit units to have a rule that says they may make Snap Shots with Rapid Fire weapons and declare a Charge in the same turn, but that Charge will always be considered Disordered. But even there I think that steps on the toes of eg SW players who can already basically do that if they want, though admittedly not with RF weapons. And I still think that should be on a per-unit basis, or even a Rite of War basis, for more widespread usage. That way you're not encouraging assault gunlines like some kind of filthy Ork player.
>>
>>92557050
The caveat is on the transport itself: technically Land Raiders can transport Jump Pack Assault marines, and they can also embark most Buildings.
Problem is when they have "Infantry Transport"; like Rhinos do
>>
>>92556976

AoD rulebook, p211

>Certain types of Wargear also limit the ability of models to Embark upon Transport Vehicles. In all cases, this will be noted in the Wargear’s rules. E.g., models equipped with a Jump Pack or Jet Pack may not Embark on Transports that do not have the Flyer type.

it's not actually in the various jump/jet pack rules, but it's in the main rulebook, which is less onerous than repeating it five times; it's been in 40k since at least 2008

Sanguinius, other than not being able to board anything with the Infantry Transport rule because he has Bulky, can actually get in a Spartan because he doesn't have a jump pack.

If it’s FW you shouldn’t have that many issues, most of the big pieces are thick enough that they won’t bend much due to tension. If it’s recast, be prepared. I’m actually a huge advocate of recasts, but the original FW ones come with plastic baneblade parts for the hull, and recasts very rarely do well with long thin parts like plastic tank hulls.

I’ve managed to snag 2 mk4 dreads second hand and I’m wondering how I would go about equipping them. 2 mortis, one lascannons and the other auto cannons ? I know plenty of people who play 2e and are making more 2e armies either by scavenging old 2e and RT models or using more modern minis. 2e rules are fun. Yes, there's a lot of tables and random stuff, but, win or lose, it's the most fun I've had with 40k in a long time. We're also playing a lot of Mordheim and have a bunch of young people hooked to it as well.
>>
>>92559203
The ironclad definitely fits in 30k, I feel.
>>
do the old resin doors fit with the new plastic Deimos Rhino?
>>
>>92559203
I'm positive I've seen the FW Ironclad in the background of one of the black books. Besides, even if the Ironclad dreadnought as a pattern is post-Heresy, it's just an extra armoured MkIV Castraferrum dread. Slap a pair of arms on it and let it loose.
>how I would go about equipping them
Mortis (double guns) and Furioso (double fists) are probably the most potent combos, depending on the legion, table, etc. 8 lascannons securing the rear while a twin-fisted "ironclad" charged up the field. Hellfire (gun and missiles) and plain gun and fist dreads are classic. Shame there's no AssCan option (unless you play IF or BA).

NTA but you have to realize that there are differences between the iconography used in 30k and 40k. No, there’s no single reference chart that defines exactly what is and isn’t used, but you can get a general idea of the aesthetics from what visuals we have. Art (and we are really talking about design choices in art here, as all of this shit is fictionally anyways) very rarely has nice black and white lines and rules from but that doesn’t mean you can’t identify general styles of different artists or periods. If you’re so damn autistic (and I mean actual autistic, not bullshit internet “my personality sucks” autistic) or just plain retarded that you can’t understand that then not might be worth picking up a fundamentals of artistic style textbook (there are even some very good books on sculpting styles) before you shit out your mouth some more.
