i watched this movie "othello", i thought it was visually very interesting but everything was going so fast i couldn't follow it and i got whiplash. is this a movie i'm supposed to have seen and studied the shakespeare play just to be able to watch it, in that mr welles suffers no fools and isn't going to waste screentime introducing characters or establishing plot?

(i have never seen or read othello before)

I haven't seen Orson's take on Othello, but, assuming you're an ESL, read Shakespeare. His most significant dramatic pieces (Macbeth, King Lear, and especially Hamlet) are the most important works of art for the development of Western civilization this side of the Bible and the Greeks. You can read most of them in a few hours max. It'll help contextualize things you previously hadn't even thought of as particularly Shakespearean.

while i am ESL i might as well have been born english, i have been living and breathing the english language for decades i wield it as comfortably as i do my own mother tongue. and i have watched shakespeare movies before. the dated english can be a little hard to understand, as well as just the stagelike performing, but that kind of goes with the territory. it's just othello i'd never seen, and i wasn't familiar with the plot

consider giving the orson welles othello a shot, it felt very striking but hard to follow for me. I will watch Kenneth Brannagh's 1995 othello next, I've generally liked his shakespeare adaptations and appearantly his is a bit more digestible -- welles's is said to be a fast paced version of an already snappy play, which also suffered from production issues that exacerbated the at times discombubulating experience i had watching it. but i'd love to hear what my friends from /film/ that saw it think of it

>In The American Cinema, Sarris lists what he termed the "pantheon" of the 14 greatest film directors who had worked in the United States: the Americans Robert Flaherty, John Ford, D. W. Griffith, Howard Hawks, Buster Keaton, and Orson Welles; the Germans/Austrians Fritz Lang, Ernst Lubitsch, F. W. Murnau, Max Ophüls, and Josef von Sternberg; the British Charles Chaplin and Alfred Hitchcock; and the French Jean Renoir. He also identified second—and third—tier directors, downplaying the work of Billy Wilder, David Lean, and Stanley Kubrick, among others.
>In his 1998 book You Ain't Heard Nothing Yet: The American Talking Film, History and Memory 1927–1949, Sarris upgraded the status of Billy Wilder to pantheon level and apologized for his earlier harsh assessment in The American Cinema.[6]

False! Barring David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan, and a handful of Quebecois metal bands, I usually despise Canadians. It comes from Ess Why lyric sheets.

Just watched this. Great post-apocalyptic film. Enjoyed the raw starkness of it. I give my thanks again for sharing it.
Plot hole: The old man could've impregnated the women and at least preserve the biological reproduction of the species, despite failing to civilize/socialize the youngest survivors. But the logic in the movie seems to mistakenly equate "old male = infertile male"

4k has gotten me back into collecting, since the early DVD days. Blu-ray can look fantastic, but there’s something about the grain and color with 4k that just makes it look incredibly mesmerizing to me.
Be careful about getting excited though- there are fuckloads of 4k releases that are literally worse than DVD releases. You still need to do your research and not just blind buy simply because it’s 4k.
Also, invest in a proper surround sound system.
