A mural in Trespasser heavily implied these orbs were made out of lyrium, or maybe of Titans' hearts. You can also find a fuckton of them hidden behind a wall in the library, next to Sandal's diary. The new writers probably decided to add one more step to Solas' old ritual by reusing the lyrium idol, so now the new canon seems to be that Solas created the Veil using his foci + his dagger (one of the mage specializations in Veilguard makes you fight with a dagger and orb, after all). First he tries to unlock his orb, since recovering the blade is definitely more complicated, but is too weak to do so -> Inquisition happens -> the Orb is broken -> Solas has to go for plan B: recover the idol, cleanse it from red lyrium, enter the Fade, and restore the old world of the elves. It seems the Orb would have made things much easier, while the blade is less powerful/doesn't allow him to physically enter the Fade as easily as the Orb could.

The nu-writers destroyed the existing lore and characters to make a blank slate world through which they can push their own shitty characters. Not even Solavellans were spared, having their elf inquisitor be turned into piece of cardboard with zero standards who does nothing but pine for Solas and want to be with him despite the fact that he kills Varric and did everything for his actual true love, Mythal. The sales tanked, the reviews aee abysmally bad and Bioware aren't even trying to salvage it, instead trucking right along to ruin their last great IP Mass Effect.
