I think Alfira had the beginnings of something interesting, I like the idea of someone maybe not entirely suited for adventuring being along for the ride. A lot of characters have a clear good/bad path, maybe for Alfira it's seeing horrors like the mindflayer colony and still trying to hold onto her optimism or becoming a cynic. I don't know, I'm not a writer, but someone could have massaged it into something interesting. I also wonder if we weren't meant to have an artificer companion at some point with Barcus.
