Ian Flynn was, at one point, just your average Satam/Archie fan who wrote fanfictions and fancomics.When Archie went into the Penders era, Ian Flynn wrote in with suggestions and criticisms. So when Penders was eventually canned, Ian was right there. He had good knowledge of the comic, and they were like, "Fuck it, you're in."Ian then received praise for the grand achievement of being better than Penders-era Archie and was hailed as a savior. And he was a generally agreeable person, which companies really like. So as the comic mandates got stricter, he followed along, despite the fact that doing so was also killing the universe he loved.When Archie was canceled and IDW started, he was brought on for that. And since IDW was under direct Sega supervision now, Mr. Flynn was bootlicking them directly. At the time, the current Sonic writers/localizers for the games weren't good. You probably know Pontac and Graff, whose knowledge of Sonic was legitimately just skimming Wikipedia articles. And as time went on, there was more and more hatred for their writing.Flynn took advantage of that. He said, "You know, if you want me to write for the games, you should show there's demand for that. Hint hint, wink wink, #KnowingSmile," and thus the #Flynn4Sonic hashtag was created and gained major traction.This was undoubtedly shown to Sega.Yet again, we find ourselves in a situation where they have to let go of their terrible writer(s) and Ian Flynn is right there. He has the seniority. He was well-liked. So from Sega's perspective, letting Ian write for the games sounded like the perfect idea.Ian played the long game for over 20 years with no merit other than writing Sonic fanfictions. He didn't get where he was because he was talented. And the kicker? Since he played the waiting game, he has no prospects other than Sonic. He can't move onto something else, because for every franchise that has actual quality control, Flynn would be a major downgrade. Sonic is all he has.
