Because most game devs, especially indie ones, are all sheltered geeks and nerds. They have a mental breakdown at anything related to reality, and don't have much life experiences to draw from, which means sci-fi and medieval (usually it's also fantasy) are so common, as they allow "escapism" and they let you get away with bad world building and writing easier.
It's also why period pieces and contemporary settings are so rare in gaming. Very few devs are willing to make a game set in modern times or during any of the Cold War periods (which are the most kinoest settings btw, this is scientifically proven fact)

A pre-industrial setting means your game doesn't devolve into gun slop. You get knights, chivalry swords, armor castles and kings, and a world where travel is difficult and dangerous because you can't just hop in a car or a plane, and the woods could be full of whimsical creatures and bandits. And that's before you even add any magic or mythical elements.

Industrial society is the anomaly and an imposition on the human spirit. We were not meant to live like we currently do.

In the end, it's a matter of personal preference and a matter of knowing what you're more likely to encounter on horseback.
If I am about to face an enemy knight formation, I'll obviously bring out a mace.
If I am about to face an archer formation, I'll probably bring out a sword.

In fantasy settings, wild animals and monsters don't have armor in the traditional sense, making swords the superior choice for an all-rounder solution.

shape appeal is important too, and not covered by many if any artbooks. a lot of the shapes in your work look choppy and "ugly". this video explains it better than I can without a visual guide..

Imagine if someone told you with 100% certainty that your success is guaranteed, all the positive reception you imagined about your project will actually come to pass. (The person is either from the future or using magic, either way it's completely factual).
Would that change your daily lifestyle in any way? Would you keep doing the exact same things you do right now or would you do something different?

If I knew my success was guaranteed I think I would do things differently a bit, I wouldn't waste so much time procrastinating, doomscrolling or arguing on social media, I'd try to get my sleep schedule fixed, go to sleep exactly at 10-11 and wake up at 7-8 and get as many hours on my project as I reasonably can.

No, there's a big difference between being a student and being a professional inside and outside of academia. You're not expected to memorize everything but you're expected to scaffold your gaps in knowledge so you can work from references. How it used to work was a few students followed a mentor around and wrote papers, each of them becoming additional experts in the field.

But that's obviously not a scalable solution so they started giving out diplomas and formalizing tests. In recent times a diploma is akin to a proof of apprenticeship producing working professionals, but academia was never designed explicitly for this purpose.

So you have an institution in place that is supposed to evaluate thousands of students every year and so the most scalable solution is to test students ability to memorize and apply formulas under pressure and specific time intervals. As a result it heavily favors individuals with high working memory but doesn't really test anything else. That's why you have an entire industry producing useless candidates in rapidly changing fields because the curriculum and tests were never about nurturing your personal growth or stimulating your curiosity.

It's a regular 3D grid with cells are the size of a boid's max range.
First pass calculate what cell each boid is in, and from that you know how populated a cell is and the order in which each inhabitant can be stored.
Actual data structure building was a pain part since you are limited to straight arrays, so you need to calculate the starting offset of each cell from the total content of the cell before it. Struggled a lot getting it to get parallelized at decent speed, until I learned it's called "Prefix Sum" and could find specific algo for it (https://developer.nvidia.com/gpugems/gpugems3/part-vi-gpu-computing/chapter-39-parallel-prefix-sum-scan-cuda). Once you have every cell's offset it's just a matter of inserting directly into the array at Cell + OrderInTheCell calculated in the first pass.
A non-obvious optimization was that cramming all the boid-relevant data into a single object to have a single memory read was MASSIVELY faster than using either straight AoS or SoA. It pay largely for the relatively fat pass of building all those object from scratch each frame.

Compute shaders are when you use your GPU for other shit than drawing pixels. Not really a recent tech, but rarely used. It's like multi-threading on steroids with even more restriction and quirks.
Another perk is that since your data are already on the GPU, you don't need any memory transfer to actually draw all the corresponding objects.

Got serialization working. The whole ECS is saved to a file. I did a little trick where labels and other strings can stay in static memory and won't be written to a file. Instead they can be queried with a hashmap key. This should help keep file size small.

You have to decide if you are making a sim (Grand Turismo) or an arcade racer. Even then you have different kinds of arcade racers, kart racing, sci fi futuristic racing etc. The more arcadey it is the more you have to game the physics so braking isn't as necessary. But there's a lot of racing games out there - look at Kirby Air Ride. Obviously not a sim but you essentially have to "brake" and slide all the time to make turns.

I've realized my biggest problem with game development. I have trouble pushing a game from

I don't know why but I'm really averse to this. Like for example I finished making the art for one specific aspect of the game. I set up the assets in game and the animations. Yet I'm already avoiding setting up the code and menu for it to work as intended. This avoidance issue of mine seems very common when it comes to things that have to do with UI and anything to do with music/sfx.

So now that I have serialization working the next step is custom dynamic behavior. Basically having commands change the world depending on specific conditions.

The idea is so that I can eventually have things like locked doors and chests, rooms that change (like breaking through a crack in the wall), et cetera. I'll come up with a basic example and see if I can get it done by tomorrow. I have to get ready for work soon.

Learned how to do AI navigation meshes before I add my own custom character models for enemies/monsters. Added a player death prefab with blood explosion FX. Added a starting zone; that lets the player change their equipment in the menus before the first arena fight of any level starts; once they leave the starting zone square a magic explosion goes off to delete the starting zone and start enemy waves.

The player has to kill the random enemies in a preset number of waves until the number of waves is over. Once the number of waves is over and the player killed all the enemies on this stage the white door opens; letting them go through an optional level with more random enemies and random loot or they can use the exit portal that spawns where the starting position used to be to go to the next floor of the tower. This system causes risk and reward thinking; is it worth it to spend time exploring the whole floor that plays like a hand crafted linear adventure level (but it still has random enemies like a roguelike) after beating the random enemy arena or just go to the next floor quickly and not risk death but then you get to a boss faster and end up weaker for the boss fight by not exploring every floor's adventure path. The gate door on the right is the very end of that adventure path and loops back to the levels enemy arena fight room so the player is able to go to the next floor by looping around despite however the adventure path is designed on each floor. At the end of each floor you get teleported back to the nexus where you spend souls on random items that spawn randomly each time you get portaled back to it; and then get sent to the next floor/arena enemy room (with its own optional adventure path)

Development would instantly pick up. Guaranteed success means there is no reason for me to slack off and avoid it. After all one of my games was years in development and looks like an obvious flop. I have an idea for a game that's never been done before but may become possible in the next 5-10 years once AI is powerful enough. Some of you may have seen how amazing SeaDance 2.0 which just released is, how it can create videos that often times look like actual movie clips with zero flaws and high cinematic expertise.

The game idea is a persistent world open world massively multiplayer (but not MMO) sandbox game, and AI monitors everything every player does, who is friends of who, enemies of who, it records everything you do in a fuckhuge and detailed log, it then cross checks you (or your "group" of people it thinks are your allies/friends), it then checks the logs of you / your group and determines who the "main character" of this game's world currently is. once you are the main character it takes the logs of you and your friend group and your enemies and turns them into a movie script, everything you actually did, everything you actually said, selects the parts of it that actually matters, and then:

it AI generates literal anime episodes of you and your friends and your enemies with your actual characters (redrawn as anime of course), in 5+ years these will look very good im sure. it puts a new episode up on youtube/etc for the world to see every 3 days. it dramatizes it, makes it more cinematic, excludes boring parts, etc. if someone becomes more "main character worthy" than you it finds a way to transition to them being the main focus instead.

this is already possible using SeaDance 2.0. people are willing to accept the flaws of the final AI episode right now. making the actual multiplayer sandbox game is the hardest part right now. however, the game could possibly be quite low quality like Runescape or some terrible shit, and people may play it anyway just because the main point is to be included in anime episodes.

i'd say have a main series but every 5th episode have a "side episode" that is not related to the main story or main characters, just chooses some rando and makes an episode about them.
