/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - HANDSEWN COMFYNESS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Anyone here knowledgeable about combat boots used in the US army? What would be the combat boots version of a M-65 field jacket? Something that's the most generic/iconic version, preferably in black/leather. Maybe something worn in an iconic era like WWII or the Vietnam War. I tried googling it and I could only find the phrase Intermediate Cold/Wet Boot, pic related seems like a pretty popular style.

Don't worry I don't plan on larping or going full blown stolen valor retard or anything. I just need to know more about these boots for research purposes.

corcoran field/jump boots used to be a go-to for post-ww2 , but their quality has fallen off lately

viberg service boots and their legion of imitators are based on the ww2 standard issue boot, although they don't have the shin buckle thing.

the problem with thursday is that they use toppy of a top lift
>>
>>18094288
but you can't clinch the nail if you're nailing from the inside
>>
>>18094299
theyll likely use a threaded nail and have a machine drive them in on the line
the nails stabilizing the stack plus the glue is enough
no nails plus a toplift thin enough to flex is a no no
they couldnt even run nails downwards into that desu

theres obviously a leather midsole. no welt is that thick. if its a true moc then they probably blake stitched it and the welt is fake

handsewn mocs are stitched directly to the midsole no welt required

there is no welt. the stitch you see is to connect the midsole, which the upper is connected to, to a thin leather piece which the crepe is cemented to

thats a cosmetic welt with a fake stitch glued on the rim of the midsole

Can someone recommend a boot that's comfy enough to walk in for 8 to 12 hours a day. I do a whole lot of walking at work, especially up and down hills and through brush.

I currently have Danner mountain 600s which are great but I don't trust them to hold up to a snake bite if I happen to tread on one. And snake boots are super bulky, ugly, and uncomfortable and a little over the top for what I need.
>>

The southern Pacific rattlesnake can't penetrate boots as well as other snakes I don't have to deal with. But snake boots are overbuilt to avoid lawsuits. I have gators to protect my ankle and calf but I'd like something relatively sturdy just for my toes and side of my foot. The danners I think are just a little too soft and thin for my liking.

Conditioned my Viberg double butts for the first time yesterday. The more I wear them the more deeply weird they seem. The veg tan tends to show more of the little nicks and scrapes that happen to them than chrome tanned leathers which is cool. The stitching used for the stitchdown is also pretty thick compared to other pairs I've seen, but they still have Viberg's crazy SPI. The leather itself has extremely fine creasing and there's no rolling at all. Only on the right boot can you see a somewhat larger, more defined crease on the vamp. This cut of leather is usually used for belts and it definitely shows in the way it acts when stressed.

The decision to fit these with the smaller eyelets and thus thinner laces is really strange considering how stiff the leather continues to be The boots just do not want to give which puts a lot of extra pressure on the laces. The copper eyelets had a couple of small burrs which ate through laces in no time flat. I had to sit down with a jeweler's loupe and needle file and go over every single eyelet to make sure everything was smoothed out and even then I've had to come back and re-file a couple where I missed a small edge or two. I've had to buy two extra pairs of laces to replace ones that have been destroyed.

These bastards took some time to break in and after a few months of wearing them 2-3 days a week they still feel like they need more. I would not call them comfortable, long days in these can be brutal towards the end. Hopefully that will continue to change but we'll see.
>>
>>18095155
Considering I conditioned twice a year, I don’t think I over-conditioned the leather

also silk or polypropylene inner sock with wool outer sock is the best recipe for blister avoidance. double wool's ok. silk socks fall apart quickly hiking and polypro is hard to find in liner thicknesses since rei stopped making it (dress socks.)
and be sure to have some leukotape on you its a miracle cure for blisters and way better than moleskin.

i also highly suggest trying out doing a toe socks liner inside of normal socks. its not for everyone's feet but when it works you simply dont get blisters. injinji or aonjie is good. get your wool outer socks from darn tough theres a reason over 90-95% of thru hikers wear them over other brands, its not just marketing.

they're so good as long as they don't make your forefoot too voluminous and hot spot on the sides. trust me. the wool ones kind of fall apart fast though because they're so thin that's one thing i'd really recommend synthetic over unless you're fine with $$$ over time.
>leukotape
>better than moleskin
oh i should make it clear i'm not saying not to bring moleskin. a lot of people don't but i find that its usually very obvious if one or the other is going to work better on a certain blister and you'll be glad to have both when you need them.
leukotape fucking owns when it works though. you can leave your tape job on for several days at a time hiking heavy and sweaty and its genuinely second skin tier.

"I was able to share the images with our product team for review, and we understand your concern regarding the color variance between the two boots in your pair.

While the color variation can seem like an imperfection, it is actually a natural variation of the leather. Leather is a natural material, and as the Indigo colorway of our Vanguard boots is a combination of an inky blue and black, the shades of either color may appear more apparent in some boots than in others, and will have variations, even across the same pair. Additionally, darker and lighter spots are part of what gives it life and dimension.

Based on the images, this pair looks alright to us, and would fall under the 'near-perfect factory seconds' category that our items sold in our warehouse event would fall under. "

Not a boot question but a shoe fit question since I have nowhere else. What does it mean if I can’t get my foot in the shoe and open up the vamp without extreme difficulty? I need wide fit? You’re correct. They were oxfords. I’ve ordered the same size in a wide fit, and also half a size up. Hopefully I’ll be able to get my foot in these. I do have very flat feet and the widest part of my (narrow) foot is near the instep so I figure that could be why. Alternatively, one shoe was just way stiffer than the other? I’ll try the others first because I’m scared to damage them trying to get the left shoe on.

They were plenty comfortable for the ten minutes standing in them, on the right foot anyway. It was difficult to get that foot in to but I managed. I am physically unable to get the left shoe on so I have no idea what the issue is there. Instep width perhaps?

It’s a pretty standard practice to put a thick fiberboard under the heel section of the leather insole. It helps the nails stay tighter in place.

It’s hard to generalize.

What everyone needs to understand is whatever going on in factory shoes is for the purpose of efficiency and keeping costs down. Throughout the decades, the industry is getting quite creative with ways to do that.

Now Grant stone can just remove that piece of fiberboard and there will be an all leather connection from the insole to the heel that autists love so much yet can never provide so much as an ounce of proof why it is good.

But they still do it. That does not mean shoes without it will have the heels failing. Manufacturers all have a certain ideology on how they make their product. Some make shoes that are hard to come off because they dont care about resoling, some make shoes a bit easier to be dismantled by a cobbler or anyone with a plier.
Or maybe they cheap out on the nails, or the machine they use to shoot the nails dont give the best result, and having that piece of hard paper solve the above problem.
But anyway you see this practice mainly on Italian shoes.

Alright /fa/, I've just been promoted to pub manager for a large British chain and I need some good boots.
They need to be smart and practical (good grip, water proof, reasonable hardy), which is a bit difficult to balance when I have to look like a professional while also chucking around barrels and shoving cunts out the door.
Off the top of my head picrel is the only thing that comes to mind

I know, I know, I've been lurking here for years. I remember the glued on soles and asymmetrical eyeholes, but they're the only brand that I know of off the top of my head.
Anything I wear will get fucked anyway so my budget is around £300.
Do anons know of anything that fits my bill for a similar price as Thursdays or should I just drop my money and find out how bad the meme really is?

Avoid lacing over the bunion. Picrel is two different lacing styles that I use, obviously the trainer I just got lazy and it looks weird but trainers are trainers. The lacing on the oxford looks better but it depends on how the top of the shoe is designed (below the surface the lacing pattern is pretty much identical to what I've done on my trainer).

toe curl: let it happen or use shoe trees?
is it bad?
>>
>>18101515
team let it happen and it looks neat
it flattens out on foot anyways
>>
>>18101515
trees are nice to have, but personally, only the shoes and boots that are out of rotation for longer get them, so the leather doesn't sag under it's own weight with time
i don't mind the toe curl on most of my boots, that i wear regularly, other than the iron ranger, which has trees in it at all times
the fit is a bit better on broken-in boots that you don't constantly stretch back into shape with trees after every wear
the mositure wicking qualities of trees are overrated in my opinion and not using them isn't as bad for longevity as people claim, if you brush regularly and maintain the uppers
creases in the vamp are going to happen no matter what just with wear and trees don't make them disappear or really prevent them to any significant extent
>>
>>18101583
>other than the iron ranger, which has trees in it at all times
Good call, Iron Rangers tend to develop massive creases. My old pair, for which I didn't use trees, creased so badly it chaffed the top of my foot.
Excessive toe curl can make the fit feel like the boot shrunk about half a size.

My personal recommendation is anything with a leather footbed, leather midsole and Vibram outsole. Try buying some Steinkoglers, with a nice pair of dense wool socks. I would not recommend leather soles, unless you are traveling via car or public transport often. Do not buy some overpriced shit brand like Danner, or most of the other brands recommended and posted here. Even simple semi-‘barefoot’ shoes like Converse 70s will be rather comfortable, especially when climbing a lot of steps in Japan. Ortholite insoles will also help to prevent foot pain.

What is stopping them from using grain leather for the lining? That is split suede.
>>
Is there any practical benefit to getting a boot with stitchdown construction instead of goodyear welt construction?
>>
>>18103720
theoretically its more waterproof, but seems kinda moot when 90% of stitchdown boots are like 120 degree stitchdown at the front and the rest naildown. Also most shit cobblers will turn the flared out upper into swiss cheese, so a resole from a skilled cobbler might be more expensive.
>>
>>18103707
nothing stopping them, probably just a lame cost saving measure
feels like my nigs use grain leather but they also use lasting machines and don't mckay stitch anymore and skimp on the height of the tongue gusset so when you're laced up fully there's a gap between the top eyelets because the tongue doesn't go up high enough
>>
>>18103720
it's significantly cheaper and faster to produce, less materials, less processing steps than goodyear welt
in practice you don't get to enjoy the benefit of a cheaper boot, because the manufacturers and influencers paid by them would have you believe "it's just as premium"
the "it's more water resistant" is the biggest marketing cope that they ever came up with as an excuse as to why a $600+ boot would use one of the cheapest resolable contruction methods (only beaten by blake stitch)
having the vamp be the main structural piece holding the boot together means the boot is less resolable and the vamp doesn't keep it's shape as well
most nicks boots that are actually used as work boots are not in a state where they can restitch through the flred uppers, because they are so damaged and they need a full recraft, realistically most of these boots go straight in the trash and people just get new ones

I don't even clean them. just brush and condition occasionally

But the stains mentioned didn't go away with brushing

wedge soles look like shit, i'd rather have a gumlite sole if i wanted something sneaker-like, which i don't.
