If you're not helpless old rice works fine but most don't wrench. Shame really since once you do your entire automotive life (and DIY life) is much improved. People are brave enough to choose an impressively dangerous mode of transport but intimidated or too lazy to study what can save them thousands (more over the rest of their life) and give them immediate service to their liking instead of paying high shop labor rates.

You interested in anything in particular?

Looking to get my first bike soon and right now I'm leaning towards getting a Bonneville. T100 or T120? I was also looking at the SR400 but they don't seem very common around here.
>>
>>27604699
If you're deadset on getting a Triumph and those are your only options get the T120. With the T100 as your riding skills improve, and along with them your need for speed, it's going to seem more and more anemic

I'm not deadset on Triumph, just a classic looking bike (was inspired to get one because of Kino). I also looked at Royal Enfield because they fit the look to a T, but apparently their bikes are shit. I'm certainly open to other suggestions.

>>27604720
REs are indeed shit, I've test ridden several of them. Ignore all the industry hype from shills, they're third world shit built out of alibaba parts with some lipstick on them. Have you considered the Kawasaki W800? They also make a W650 but I don't think it's available in America. I owned one for a while, I love it. If you're looking purely for a classic bike experience, the Kawi is truer to that than the Triumph. The Triumph is a thoroughly modern motorcycle with retro styling (water-cooled, electronics, etc.). The Kawasaki has an air-cooled, bevel-drive cam engine. It has a very minimalist look to it, and the cafe racer version is sleek as fuck and probably the most beautiful production bike made in the last 20 years IMO.

The only big downside to the W800 is the engine is definitely weak. It's a piss twin so already that doesn't do it any favors, and I think it only makes at most like 47 BHP or something. Someone said this was probably done intentionally because in the UK they have a graduated motorcycle licensing step and by keeping it under 50 HP it's available to more riders.

>>27604721
what this anon said is also good advice, I own a Guzzi V85 and I love it. Their V7 or V9 would be a really cool first bike. The only problem with Guzzis is that the dealer network in America is pretty limited which can be a pain in the ass. I have to ride 4 hours to Detroit in order to get mine serviced. Owning an Italian bike also comes with certain... quirks. Not necessarily good or bad, it's just something you learn to deal with if you want Italian style. Italian dealers also have a reputation for treating their customers like they should be grateful they have the privilege of riding an Italian motorcycle, Guzzi less so but that attitude is still there sometimes. Especially when you need a part imported from Italy and it fucking takes forever and when you try checking on it they act like you're being impatient
>>

>>
>>27604740
>>27604730
>>27604720
I'll also add that if you do get a Guzzi, there's a really cool cult following behind them and it's usually an awesome group of people. I try to attend a meetup every few months or so, most Guzzi riders have been riding them a long time and they know all the quirks of them and are very quick to extend a hand to help.
>>
>>27604740
>W800
Wow, it looks really nice. Do you think it'd be fine on a highway? I'd like to try traveling a bit after I get comfortable riding.

Nice. I have a '23 Trail and love it to bits. Had to take a bus all the way to SC to avoid a 7-month waiting list for her but got to ride back home all the way along the coastline in the fall (I'm in Ft. Lauderdale).
No pics since some retard got my office rangebanned but maybe later if I remember lmao
>>
>>27604763
I rode my W800 on the highway all the time, I got it up to 115 on the speedo before (which means more like 100 in reality) so it'll break any speed limit in America. It doesn't really have enough power to be passing people like crazy on the highway but if you're just cruising at the speed limit it's fine. The wind blast is horrific though, the fairing on the W800 cafe is really more for show than anything because in actual use it just conveniently directs the wind directly into your chest. If you're going to be doing a lot of traveling on it though, get the W800 standard and not the cafe. The clubman handlebars and sporty riding position look cool zipping around town but it's hell after 30-40 minutes if you're a big guy like me (6'3").

The W650/800 performed much better in Europe than it did in America, so while there is a pretty good aftermarket for it, almost all of it is going to be from European suppliers so you're going to pay out the ass if you want to do a lot to it. But if it's your first bike like you said I really doubt you're going to be fuckin with the engine or bobbing it or something
>>
>>27604770
That wasn't really an option when I got mine. I live in Ohio, and bought it in March so it was like 20 degrees out and pissing rain constantly. It was a miracle I found my cub at all.
If you're concerned, you can buy a pass and get around range bans.

I put them in somewhat hidden spots that I can see while riding like the inside fairing of a sport bike. They are there for me, not someone else.

So I'm looking at an old Cycle World 300 comparison test for some stupid reason and just looking at the numbers

>CBR300
27.7hp
0-60 6.3
1/4 mile 15.15 @ 83mph

>R3
36.8hp
0-60 5.1
1/4 mile 14.15 @ 90mph

How the fuck does a bike significantly down on power and trap speed have a closer 1/4 time than 0-60 time, that shit makes no fucking sense. Are they even trying to set comparable times or just doing one pull with a random rider and calling it?

Why doesn't Harley make a V4 racing bike? I don't mean a production supersport, although they could do that too, I mean like get an actual GP team and build a V4 and race it. I know it's fun for people to shit on Harleys, but I do not genuinely believe that the engineers who work at Harley are stupid people that simply don't know how to make a performance engine. They had guys like Buell who worked there that proves there's at least a few people there with some real talent.

Harley's dilemma is a business one, they have to rely on their aging Boomer demographic to stay in business, and they can't change things too drastically without alienating their core audience. But they need to change and attract younger audiences to survive in the future. They're trying to do that now with the new Pan-America and their redesign for the Sportster, but in my opinion the biggest problem is that the majority of young riders would never even consider a Harley because they associate it with being slow and heavy. What better way to prove to those people they're wrong than by building a supersport? They could label it the double-twin or some shit to appeal to the Boomers and remind them that this is just an evolution of their iconic v-twin. I just genuinely don't understand why Harley continues to build uglier and uglier versions of essentially the same motorcycle from the 1950s and expect it to attract new people

>tl;dr
Why doesn't Harley build a V4 race bike, make a production version of it, and make a shit load of money ala Indian and their FTR. Pic kinda related, a cool custom I found on bike exif

They probably do, the issue is that the majority of r&d guys at harley are probably guys who grew up working on harleys and that's all they know is big v-twins. If they wanted to they could definitely make badass v-twin that would kill at the drag strip, but I don't think they actually have enough familiarity with other engine platforms to make a competitive bike. It's a shame because I used to have a ton of fun as a kid racing my buddies on our sportsters around curvy farm roads and I always thought it would be cool to see an actual competitive harley on the circuit somewhere besides gay shit like flat track and king of the baggers. Honestly I think some of the progressive thinking we're finally seeing with HD in the form of the adv bike and redesigns is their swan song, their best seller is the fucking trike and once all the boomers finally die I think the business is going to go under faster than the Titanic. On the other hand maybe the geriatrics dying off will finally allow them to really start innovating again and they'll survive and even thrive. Only time will tell

Except they didn't always sell to stupid nostalgic boomers. The reason Harley became so popular in the first place (besides government contracts in WWII) was because their bikes performed so well in the old school flat track racing. Kids wanted to buy them because they were fast. They could do that again.
>>
>>27605137
They have racing teams though

Per our CBA, my employer provides hearing protection. I grab a pair for every shift. I wear them while performing my job duties. When the shift is over, I take them out before getting on my bike. No reason to wear them while riding.

Yeah for flat track and king of the baggers aka the harley-indian dick measuring contest. It's literally against the rules to race anything except harley and indian in that stupid shit because they know the second they opened it up to outside competition (not that anyone else gives a fuck about it) they would lose
>>
>>27605113
performance riders aren't their demo and racing teams cost a lot of money, harley's homo board only cares about squeezing money out of people dumb enough to buy "upgrades" that don't actually do anything. recently talked to one guy who got cams and didnt even know what they did, and still had stock pipes and breather but with cams it "hauls ass".

Harley built a V2 superbike when that was basically pressing the I win button due to wacky Ducati equivalency rules and couldn't win shit. (so did Suzuki somehow though but they gave up on theirs because they had a winning I4 already)

Buell is too autistic to succeed against anything but garage builders and attached to ideas that work really well with an average rider but are actually total dick when pressed at the top level. Took years to get EBR to put real brakes on a superbike.

What are the ethics of cutting up a vintage motorcycle to turn it into a custom? I think most people agree that if it's a total basket case and isn't running and is only worth its weight in scrap it's fine, but what if it runs? What if it's in good condition and is mostly original but already has some aftermarket work done on it? I really want to do a build with an old Goldwing but the only one I can find around here that's within the year range I want is from 1978 and it's in super good condition and mostly stock. I think I'd feel bad chopping it up even if I donated most of the spare parts to people who needed them
>>
>>27605285
as gay as it would be to see a pristine vintage bike butchered to make another cliche cafe racer with exhaust wrap and firestones, it would be an even greater tragedy to see it chopped up only for the builder to run out of money or talent and have basically ruined the bike for nothing. this is why it's best to start with a bike that's beat to shit already, please don't ruin a piece of history for your ego project

In other words, most of them are all bark and no bite and aren't the outlaws they think they are. They're faggots and posers playing dressup and they only act tough when their boyfriends are around.

How does one learn how to do this kind of stuff? I mean like tricks and shit like this. I know this isn't necessarily super impressive but I could just never bring myself to do this on my bike because I'd be afraid as fuck of dropping it and damaging it. Should I just buy a cheap bike as something to learn how to wheelie/stoppie/burnout/etc. on? What size is best to practice this kind of stuff on? I'm pretty big too (6'3", 260 lbs) so another problem I run into is that a lot of smaller displacement bikes don't seem powerful enough for me to wheelie and shit on but the ones that are powerful enough I feel like I'm going to kill myself with if I try doing this shit

no, its a corporate demonic wordplay law and mechanism used by elites on their hierarchical ruling system, they will literally 'make' the 'water' in the court of law through various words and orders stemming from the root of their meaning and etymology

human for example being the hue of a real man
currency, the current sea between two banks on a river

A broken ring just smokes and scores up the cylinder wall. Here the piston broke first, the ring broke because it was unsupported by the (now missing) lands.
So how did you break the piston?
>>
>>27605450
I had a kz550 that a wobble kinda like that at around the same speed. Not quite so extreme, but then I was riding on first-world roads.
I think it was the factory-loose swingarm bearings. Thanks Japan!
>>
>>27605450
Some bikes (like that) have bad geometry for high speed, and when you add in (pls sir) tier roads this is what you will get.
A set of clip ons to get more weight over the front end would help prevent it, and of course a steering stabilizer.
>>
>>27605699
>>27605702
Full exhaust, two bros muffler, ecu tune from 2 wheel dyno works.
>>
>>27605706
There are no marks of the valve heads on the piston and on the cylinder walls. I'd assume running too lean, piston overheated and fractured on the lip? Just my best guess, of course unless we see the head we can only speculate.

feels bad man. Only other cope is ride it more and get a more relaxed on/off technique.
Me? I ride carbs and don't have this issue.
well, unless you get a sportster or HUGE v-twin and WHACK it open.
>>
My bike has a very slow coolant leak, as long as I keep the overflow bottle topped up it should keep the system full right? I have to daily the bike while the gasket is on order and sealant didnt stop it fully.
>>
how will dbt recover
>>
>>27605739
coolant system is pressurized that's why it doesn't boil when your bike is above boiling temps.
If it's a small leak you might be fine, but under pressure the small leak will turn into a big leak with enough time.

does it have a good used aftermarket for parts? seems like a rarer bike than most unless the parts are all interchangeable with a stand cbr600r
>>
>>27605719
In that example it was high speed (for a poobike) but it has been documented to still happen at 60-80kph or 40-50mph. They just aren't well made
>>
>>27605781
Depending on the market all the pre-RR CBR600s are officially just CBR600F, like what burgers got as the 2001-2003 F4i and the 2004-2006 F4i were just the CBR600F Sport and CBR600F in Bongland. Those bikes were made in massive numbers and any of the carbed generations are dirt cheap.

Normally I’d agree with you, however the CB750 has been a much bigger project than I anticipated, mostly due to melted wiring. SV650 bro might be onto something, provided I can find one as I live in a smaller city.

I have not ridden my byak since sunday. Feels bad.
How are my eurobros dealing with the shit weather?
>>
>>27606089
Invest in better clothes and then you never have to worry about not riding. Don't be a fair-weather sailor, the only time I won't ride my motorcycle is if there was actually like an ice storm and the roads have zero traction. That's not because I'm a badass who doesn't get cold, it's because I have a good jacket/gloves/pants/boots, and raingear
>>
>>27606093
What clothes/rain gear do you use?

Not a euro but haven't ridden since Saturday. It's either been pouring rain or near freezing temps. Just ordered some new glove to help deal with the colder temps in spring and fall.
>>
>>27606089
My rear wheel bearing blew out on my HYB Davidson. I'm pretty sure the previous owner either reused the original one when installing the aftermarket wheels or didn't properly install a new one. I'll find out when I pull the wheel and bearing this weekend.
>>
>>27606093
>if there was actually like an ice storm
Literally this monday had a foot of snow fall in a single day.
I do have decent gear and I do go on rides where I'm the only bike on the road. But 30f with freezing rain is not it brother.
