You see this in much of the media now, the way to capture the player/audience's attention is to see yourself represented through a character and their experiences. BG3 through its cast, presents a great variety of archetypes: the abused sex slave, the amnesiac whose childhood was stolen, a betrayed and disowned person, and so on. I have relived these situations over the course of the game: a big part of why I love BG3 is that, to use a fashionable term that I hate, I felt "seen" thanks to these characters.
