This is very grim. The bar is simply too high now. It saddens me since I'm almost always too late or if I'm early, then something happens that screws me over. I could've been rich off crypto but nope, I got screwed over by KYC laws. I could've been rich off stocks but nope, I was still a novice at handling success and failure at the time. I could've been rich off gamedev but nope, I threw the thought out 20 years ago and didn't try until late 2010 when the bar was still low but by the time I'd have something done it had exponentially rose to levels requiring 2000-2010 AAA standards outside of the outliers.

*long sigh* I'm so, so tired. When do I catch a break to be free of the wagecage? I was hoping to make a few more games after my current game is done but now I'm not sure how many I'd even consider should I reach that point. I screwed up again. There goes several years of my life, again. I just want to be able to sit back and relax. Pick up a video game and not be worried that I should be developing a game to escape the wagecage. Knowing I have to be in that cage 4 or 5 days a week for potentially decades puts a big damper on my mood and prevents being able to relax and just have fun.

the one area I struggle with still is doing creatures, people etc that require actual texture work more complicated than a tree or a rock
since I can't draw or make my own textures, I have to rely on ones that already exist or photobash, but certain stuff I just can't find good textures for. finding textures for a pigeon or a cat is doable, but it's not as easy for something that doesn't exist

over the course of making my game I have kind of come to hate gamers. obviously, when you make a game it should be the kind of game you want to play, but of course you want others to appreciate it too. but things like "quality of life" have fried gamer brains to the extent that they're mostly ignorant about everything these days. for example, stalker 2 has an encumbrance mechanic, and it doesn't just exist for the sake of realism, it also balances the game, makes it so the economy remains mostly harsh throughout your playthrough and you can't just lootgoblin yourself to riches in a short time by just picking up everything. but we live in a time now where none of these things are being considered by most people, when they judge games. instead this is simply considered an "outdated mechanic" today. ironically, but gamers are also mindless cattle so depending on the framing, they don't even notice when certain inventory restrictions work in the same way, but actually have less of a purpose. for example the inventory systems of arpgs. except in those games these systems don't serve any function, so people gloss over it since it doesn't really create friction (which just makes it even more meaningless btw, so that should be the instance in which people question a mechanic, not when it actually creates friction), since you can just tp back to town whenever.

What I have:
-items similar to the PoE skill items that grant you extra active skills when you equip it
-equipment quality range similar to diabloids (green, blue, purple, etc.)
-equipment can be enhanced (like +1, +2, +3, etc)
-you also can use such items for a small passive bonuses

What I'm planning to do:
-add the ability to raise the quality of those items that grant you skills (green to blue, blue to purple)

Ways I can do it:
A) enhance it to the limit of green, when it is at max, keep enhancing it to make it blue one (turning it back to +0), then do the same to make it purple
B) combine 2 such items in one

I need to hear some opinions about these, or even hear out about a different way to do it.
A is easier, but might be too straight forward, also it lets you keep its generated passive bonus from the start
B can make you polute your inventory with extra crystals that you could keep just in case you want to upgrade it, you will have a big chance of loosing its generated bonus, so if you need a particular passive bonus you'll have to keep "mining" for it.

Hello aggies, I hope you are all doing fine.

Last weekend it was the first time I showed my game at a local game convention/fest and I wanted to share some of my experience. I've got to say it was really nice for me.

My game performed quite well with people of all ages, surprisingly for me, many little kids and women enjoyed the game a lot, many playing it more than once and telling me it's addictive. Some even liking the game so much that they would play it around in the morning and then come back later during the day to play it again, their parents would say something like "My son loved your game! So he wanted to play it again!" which was super nice to hear.

The kid playing in pic related for example got obsessed with the game so much that he became the top KKD player at the venue, reaching above level 40 with practice.

Aside from that, my OCs brought me a lot of attention, I got a ton of positive comments about the art and characters alone, some people even asked me if the standees were on sale or if there were any other merch for sale.

One fun anecdote is that on the first day (the event lasted 3 days) a japanese lady was walking around the expo and saw my game and was absolutely impressed with the whole project. We talked for a while and she told me to contact her so she could help me out with the project as it looked very marketeable.

It's a lot of work to show your game IRL like this, but at least for me the playtesting and the networking you get out of it is worth it. Met some publishers as well so we'll see how that goes.

I bought this game because the author posted on 4chan from time to time, but unfortunately it's kind of bad.
Holy shit, there's some potential, it could be a good game, but there are so many little things wrong with it that make the experience unenjoyable. From the bad sound effects to the level design that doesn't decide whether it wants to be a traditional experience or a “kaizo”, everything gets on your nerves as you play.
The suitcase powers are all pretty bad to use and the explosive suitcase having to be manually canceled before it can be used again makes using it totally awful. The tricks with the suitcases are all slow and bad too, they should be items that add an element of technique and excitement to the gameplay but they're just bad.
The 4 bosses I've faced so far are all awful and should be severely reworked.
The checkpoint system doesn't work, every modern Mario World romhack removes all the pointless waiting that Nintendo loves to put in its games, but this game made from scratch has a lot of slow transitions and a checkpoint system that isn't in tune with what the game is demanding of the player.
The theme doesn't make any sense. You're a salaried worker who has to go to work every day, but you're basically in Super Mario universe without any reference to anything in the real world most of the time, except for fax machines that for some reason are there for you to enter inside them. And why does the main character look like a caricature of Iwata? Is the game trying to tell me that this is the imagination of a game designer when he goes to work? And the idea of taking the bus is a bit retarded, this guy has to make 4 transfers to get to work.
I wanted to recommend this game on Steam to help the dev, but I can't. This game needs to go back to the drawing board and be largely redone, have the sound effects replaced with ones that sound better to the ears, have all the level design redone, have all the bosses reworked, etc.

I am once again asking for recommendations for third world countries I could move to and live off of my meager game dev income. My current top picks:

Probably the best option, but I've heard the cost of living numbers you'll see online are misleading. Apparently living in any of the urban areas is actually pretty expensive and the national average income/monthly expenses stats are brought down by widespread poverty in the east. Still, it's less than living in America and seems relatively safe.

Cons are obviously how unsafe it is, plus I'd have to learn Portuguese. Ideally I'd like to move somewhere where I can get by with only English as I gradually learn the local language, but in Brazil it seems like if you don't speak Portuguese you're going to have a bad time. I'm also white so the chances of me sticking out in a crowd and getting targeted by robbers is very high. Still, it seems like a nice place if you can manage to acclimate yourself.

Again, I'd probably need to learn a new language. Google says 30-50% of Poles speak English, but from my experiences going to Spain and Portugal those fluency numbers are never true. From what I've read online most of the cities if Poland seem pretty safe, plus I'd be in eastern Europe so it would be easy to take a train somewhere else for a day whenever I'm seeking an escape from Poland (which will likely be quite often).

I think it would have been a lot cooler if they had managed to do it as a PoE1 update like they originally said they would. PoE2 was an escape hatch where they couldn't fix all the broken shit that piled up over time. And the fact that they couldn't come up with any new mechanics in time for release is kind of embarrassing. But it is impressive that even as a generator-spender rollslop game, it's undeniably going to be better than Diablo 4. Yeah you can assemble a generic fantasy camp and a few zones with assets. The gamedev renaissance hasnt happened yet and here's why.
Remember when gamedev doubters would say that you'd be better off being a code monkey than a gamedev if you cared about money? Well where are those code monkeys now? That's right they're outsourced and out of a job.

AI taking over means that there'll be more people with time on their hands for better or worse. These people need to be stimulated and to escape the harsh reality that they live in.

This is where the gamedev renaissance era starts. The demand for that stimulation only provided through porn and games (or both) will increase exponentially. The ones who stuck out and honed their GAMEDEV SKILLS will be rewarded handsomely. You have to think about this LONG TERM and never give up!

There's plenty of good games on AGDG - Peripeteia, Busted Metal, PAT, just to name a few. It comes down mostly to personal taste on what you actually like though, and those three games for example are all vastly different.

I think devs should just make the game they want to play, even if on paper it won't sell. I started working on my game because it was something I wanted to create, any hypothetical revenue from Steam sales weren't a factor on starting on it. Case in point. I've never understood why normies have this glorified vision of architects as being geniuses. I'm an architect (ok, not fully since I'm not licensed yet, but I work at an architecture firm dealing with construction drawings and shit like that) and a lot of my coworkers are dumb as bricks.

I'd argue that AutoCAD required a brain too. All it did was get rid of a lot of the mind numbing repetitive tasks and eliminated the need to go back through every sheet whenever a wall is moved. You still had to draw every line, so each one meant something. Revit is the true tard program, and unfortunately that's what my firm has transitioned to. For every part of the process it claims to speed up it massively slows down anything that requires any custom work. Any building that isn't just a gabled box with all right angles and generic windows is a pain in the ass. It's a program designed for churning out slop.

I think that's a big part on why roguelites and other sorts of replayable or emergent gameplay focused games are so popular.
