What FFXVI needed was far better enemy design, more interactivity with the enemies. FFVII remake/rebirth compeltely shat on FFXVI in that department.You dont break parts of the enemy to stagger them faster. You dont evade attacks to make them fall or something. You dont multiple times parry enemies until they drop their weapon and take 50% more damage or something. You dont turn on some enemies on fire to make them take extra stagger damage. You cant just add a stagger mechanic without interactivity with the enemy. Thats why rebirth/remake stagger works and FFXVI doesnt.

Most issues I've seen brought up about XVI all legitimately seem fixable without a foundational overhaul of every system or something. I would love to see a game take the feedback it got and just improve on those flaws and not just scrap everything. Exploration, moveset diversity, gearing all literally were solved by other games some even using similar combat design and philosophy to XVI. The hardest fix would be working party members actively into the moveset but it's not impossible either.

>>507407929I think those elements are cool but I think games like Dragon's Dogma (which XVI's combat director was a member of the combat team there so he's not unfamiliar with making the system I'm referencing) would be better. DD is an honest to God RPG in every sense of the word, elemental weaknesses, status afflictions, various buffs and debuffs, even certain weapons have unique effects associated with them like rusted weapons having the ability to inflict paralysis. DD uses a job system, it has the ability to customize a pawn which is in all essence a party member and it has loads of those systems from a gameplay end too not close to as Cuhrayzee as DMC I would say but you can get more intense with it (which they did occasionally DDON and DD2 at times). I would say most of the RPG complaints about XVI combat wise have solutions there and in other action RPGs that have done similar. The other major one for me is exploration, despite having team members from XII they made no attempt to steal the wealth of optional side combat content XII implemented. Things like Kairos and the Sagespire should be in this theoretical sequel from the getgo and in the case of Sagespire it should be one of say 3-4 optional mega dungeons tied to a quest chain or something. Maybe go for more individual superboss esque encounters. Some hunts clearly tried to emulate that feel but they missed the mark a bit imo. Exploration doesn't need to be overly gimmicky but just having cool shit to find is enough I mean look at Elden Ring it's not like the best traversal in video games but the world has cool vistas and stuff to find throughout mandatory and optional. Boom two of the arguably biggest complaints somewhat addressed. Party interaction being another one the devs had said they saw a lot of people take issue with but I consider that a structure issue not a gameplay one necessarily. More party focused side quests ala Rebirth would be my solution to that.

Games like DMC or Bayonetta are constantly giving you tools to your arsenal in their 10-12 hour adventure.But here, this is a 40+ hour adventure. The rate at which you are getting skills is much, much slower. So it leads to a much more tedious combat system for me. Even when you do get more skills, they are cool downs. Not whole other weapons. But there's almost nothing there for you to chew on. No upgrades, no good equipment. No special sauce. It's just too damn much "game" for way way too little "fun" in exchange.

I honestly could not tell you about anything that even happens in XII except running around in brown/gray sewers, brown towns, and brown deserts, talking to fat pig people.Setting/buying/unlocking Gambits was not fun. I was like "oh okay, so it plays the game for you?....very fun". Wow, I did all this work in the games menu setting things up; just so that I don't have to actually play the shitty game.The 'real time with pause' gameplay they went for is objectively uninteresting and inferior to 3 niggas in a row. It plays like Dragon Age Origins, not Final Fantasy. It's messy, chaotic, and requires targeting lines and circles and other bullshit on top in order for you to understand what the fuck is even going on. The elegance of three niggas in a row is butchered for a fake MMO that you play alone. I think it's really obvious why that system was never iterated on. It's fucking ass cheeks.

I've just beaten Bahamut on my FF run in XVI, doing all the side missions but skipping all the side mission cutscenes, the game flows a lot better.
