For that anon that suggested Sky get a shotgun. This is her during an attack now. Standing in a room with the lads and her Saiga. If raiders somehow got inside the house and into a room with her, they'd get a nasty surprise.
In this case though both Colton and Ruby were nearby and grabbed other Saigas after the raiders closed the distance on the house. The other combat capable colonists were out in the field in pretty heavy cover waiting to outflank them. They sort of did as the raiders turned and ran when confronted for the last time by Colton and Ruby. They walked right into everyone else who mowed them down as they tried to flee.

It's interesting that the room with walls/doors covering the geyser is getting heated. I would have assumed that covered geyser tiles didn't put out heat to adjacent tiles.
The temperature difference might just be because the room is smaller. If you turn it into one large room, maybe it will work out. Wait until it's not so cold to test it, though.

An official modding document won't help much. All of the mods that are hard to update require C#. The barrier is higher there because it requires external programs.

The only thing that isn't exposed is the C# stuff, but you can decompile that. I've even seen a github where someone posted the decompiled code for rimworld and all DLC back in 1.4.
And you (mostly) don't need to see the code to make use of the functions.
For example biotech added implants that a pawn can install on itself: the mechlink. If you open up the mechlink xml file you can see exactly how that was done and apply it to any new implant if you want. What is there left to document?
I do agree that an update specifically aimed at adding modding tools and functions would be nice, though.

How to do this and that at the simplest level can be learned by looking at the rimworld wiki. XML patches in any mod will be roughly the same and can be copied. But you still have to learn what you're doing so you can bugtest and troubleshoot.
Skyrim has tutorials like these, and they really amount to only pointing you in a direction. You still have to learn papyrus syntax, and you still end up looking at other people's source code to figure out how to do what (you) want, instead of just what the documentation gives you.

Use real ruins. It basically gives you the ruins of bases that were on that seed. I think it's also the add on that gives you pristine ruins quest. It's like someone abandoned their base (at any stage) and you get to go loot it. With that being said you also have to deal with other raiders, sieges and whatever defenses are left over. I've lost a lot of runs due to those ruins but there have been some with like 50 glitter world medicine, late game armor, you name it. it's high risk, high reward and it's fucking exhilarating trying to get in and get out before your single pawn, or two, gets rolled by a 30 person raid.

Absolutely not. That's only true if you quickly exploit the anomaly stuff as well like ghouls. I think having heavy SMG equivalent weapons would let you get through the basic level of anomaly entities pretty smoothly, but you do not want to meet the likes of revenants with anything before that. I'd say raise the kids before triggering the monolith because sightstealers might get them during nature running sessions, but it should be fine either way.

For me slow wound healing kills both impids and yttakins, pigs are just bad workers and slow study hurts a lot on neanderthals. For colonists I'd only take wasters and sniper imps, and maybe neanderthals with already high skills. The rest are for slavery. It isn't. Shamblers are fairly easy to deal with, as are ghouls. Sightstealers are either a complete non-issue if you wall off your base or an actual nightmare if you have a village-style base. They're not that strong, but if a lone pawn gets targeted it'll get tarpitted to death. Basic fleshbeasts are a fairly fair fight. Devourers will fuck you over if they have the numerical advantage. Chimeras will fuck you over period. Revenants should be hard to deal with, but in my experience they fixate on one pawn, so you just have that one run around in circles and shoot it with everyone else. Could be a mod fucking with it's AI though, I legit don't know anymore.
All of these can happen as soon as you activate the monolith by the way.

Mörul was a tough bastard but those monsters can put pawns to sleep, so I was forced to draft everyone else to fight with militia spears and shields, but no armor. It went about as well as you could expect. Even so we killed the first wave, but another group came while I was cleaning up and healing the injured and we were overwhelmed.

A 5x5 room is really all that's necessary for a pawn to be happy. You can make huge apartment blocks this way and house tons of people on relatively little space. Paths and hallways only need to be 2x2 to allow easy traversal and avoid the tight spaces mood. Pair similar things together such as storage and production and even consider housing your workers in the same buildings they work in for better efficiency. These are all very real things that have been done and in some cases are still being done in big cities in order to maximize space. The biggest fault Rimworld has is that it doesn't operate on the Z axis to build taller buildings and even basements/underground shelters.

Even if you're willing to trade aesthetics for compactness, this only handles half the problem. This game is in an ever downward spiral in terms of space economy. If you want to engage in all possible content in one colony, just the vanilla stuff will fill your whole map, even with commie blocks. Throne rooms, gene editing buildings, and band nodes are the biggest offenders.
And every mod added will make it worse. New workbenches, toilets, whatever.

I wasn't paying attention for a while, but some of the mod frameworks developed significantly.
Big+Small framework went from a mod that only scaled pawns to a huge framework for genes and xenotypes.
EBSG framework I've never seen before but it makes it possible to clone the sanguophage resource system with xml.
Ever since anomaly dropped I've been working on a Rimworld of Magic type mod using pure xml. Being limited to xml, it's a little janky in how it functions, since I had to use the vanilla functions for things they weren't intended for. I've already finished the core system of the mod and about half of the abilities, but I'm tempted to scrap it now and start over on one of these frameworks.
Pure xml would be more performant, but a framework could clear up the jank. The only thing that's missing from the frameworks I see is a leveling system. If only there were something like the UI of psycasts extended that could be used by other mods..
