I tried blender when I was like 12. Found it way too messy and whilst stylised... ugly.

Upon further thought it's trannywear and also just seems like it's the choice for terminally online people. I want to use a software that cool older industry guys would use. I feel that there would be less junk tutorials and resources to shift through too.

15 years later, I am fluent in Rhino3D- but that's CAD. So naturally I want to learn a polygon based modeller with the most similar workflow... I heard this might be 3dsMAX? I haven't tried it, but I mainly work on Linux/Mac so having to boot up windows just for 3dsMAX is unattractive.

MODO. What's the consensus? From my research it's pretty based and I just just loaded up the 10 year license . I only want to make some spaceship concept models as a hobbyist. I want to enjoy it too. Modo seems like a good fit or?

Plasticity, because it's nurbs. I've seen people online make pretty things with it. But also Why not just stick with Rhino? Is there any reason to not use Rhino for concept modelling?

And you think your opinion of Blender is somehow still relevant? That wasn't even Blender 2.8

No. But that's not the only reason I don't want to use it. I listed a couple reasons in the OP- but also having tried the 3.0 or whatever new UI- I still don't love it. It's sort of built around windows aesthetics and im a UNIX guy.
Blender just doesn't appeal to me on a soul level like Rhino does. I love that in Rhino you can type commands too , it's lightning fast.

And I have zero interest in animation. I purely want to model. Rendering is something I want to do too, but I am open to dedicated software for that later. Right now I want the best modeller. Sounds like you aren't familiar with Modo...

You can customize blender's UI pretty heavily to your liking, I've seen some trans low poly 3d artists do this which may be more your speed.

I want to switch from blender to rhino, even for poly stuff. After years of blender (and max and Maya) they just feel like animation or prop artist tools, and i miss and want more of the grid and relative grid, measurement flow.

Also tried Houdini which was nice, and made me realize i would probably love grasshopper.

Why do you want to try blender?
I feel like if you are more environment are or architect brained, you will get insane.
People literally just somt care about measurements and slide stuff manually by eye.

You can use some extensions to get there, and i tried for years. But Maya and blender and max just feels like its made for animators and prop Arists not environments.

>architect brained, you will get insane.

You think? when I look on artstation and look at people who do concept art that I want to learn to do myself, every single one uses a poly modeller.
Never seen anyone use rhino outside of physical fabrication and architecture.

I do like my measurements...

Maybe you're right. but the problem with rhino is that when trying to model things fast, you will get plenty of tiny gaps and errors which disable certain commands, and require fixing. This is to keep objects valid and is necessary in precision work but for fast concepting it massively slows you down. This is why I'm considering using another software. But I am already good at rhino... so maybe I should just stick with it.

What makes you want to do the switch?

You can suck on my BWC which has tons of soul for you to absorb.

I remember being forced to use blender for the first time, (because the shitty uni pc only had that preinstalled), and it was horrible, even just selecting an object felt almost impossible (I was used to 3ds max).

However, a few years later I tried blender 2.8 out of my own volition, used the 'industry compatible' keymap and got to learning it.
Turns out, it felt muuuch more creative and joyful to do things than 3ds max which somehow felt a lot colder and depressing to use.
I'm still missing some features (good caustics, physics+liquid simulations and other minor stuff), but overall the stuff I made with blender is orders of magnitude better than what I made before. Then again, it's just a hobby and I'd still not call myself good

Maya. Maya has a soul. It's your soul. It takes your soul and then it has soul

This, OP just stop being a pretentious fuckwad. The aesthetics of the program do not matter, all that matters is what you create with it. Get over yourself it's embarrassing. I used to worry about trivial stupid shit like that when I was 14. You are not special for liking heckin oldfag UNIX aesthetics. It's not a personality trait.

Aesthetics of the program don't add polygons to the model. It's a tool first and foremost. Are you also worried about how a hammer you use matches your purse?

I used Modo with MCAD (mostly SolidWorks) for rendering and animating product/machinery. Any modelling I did was for knocking out props for the scene. Modo's renderer was a bit clunky (hello noise) but you could run V-Ray or Octane to obtain excellent results in a short period. Meshfusion good when it worked but I found it would often break. Sad to see it die but the 10 year license a decent gesture by The Foundry. I will have to change so back to Blender.
Rhino is powerful and its SubD great for product. You can use it like AutoCAD, surface like Alias (sort of) or concoct all sorts of shit in Grasshopper.

yes, 3dsmax is old and outdated as fuck so if you learn it you will effectively become an old man
also calling people terminally online is an extremely terminally online thing to do
>>
>>1029884
Why do you use blender over Rhino then?

Blender had become really damn good since 2.8 and the most solid program for modeling. It used to be lame before 2.8 and I avoided it like the plague aswell back when I was with Maya, but now? Shit, absolutely solid, especially for modeling.
Dont listen to the plasticity anon, nobody uses nurbs anymore (except product or car design).
3dsmax is absolute ass to work with and only relevant because oldfags are used to it, like an abusive relationship. Only learn it if you hate yourself.
But hey, if you hate blender that much, you can give 3dsmax a try. If you can live with its weird flaws and eternally unfixed bugs its a solid modeling software.

I started off doing rendering of interiors for furniture designed in SolidWorks - 20+ years back with Blender but hadn't quite got my head around the modelling system. I didn't have Rhino then so this was the easiest approach. When I finally got hold of Rhino the manipulation and rendering of polygonal mods was a bit shit (furniture needs a room with props for rendering).
Modo did all that I needed, quickly and easily - it would import SolidWorks data (export via render engine which was Modo's) and I got my head around modelling, animation, rigging, texturing (repairing CAD decals) pretty rapidly.
I will probably go back to Blender as its intended for this, though 20 years on I still hate the (changed) interface. And it's free. Paying for software licenses /rental is a very expensive PITA (pro so can't run risk of hooky shit).
