The statchecks give you knowledge about the outcomes of the choices you will be presented with. So you have choices in the present (the memoir researcher in the mansion) and you also chose how events unfolded in the memoir when it is missing pages. These combine in the end to give you multiple endings. I know how treacherous branching can get so the branches get heavy only near the end, before that choices mostly affect flavor and some branches converge.
